Madison embodied the legends of old and cemented his name in the history books to go along with all the other greats, that post season. He shut down every team that he faced. That Giants post season run for him was one of the greatest a pitcher has ever done. He finished the series allowing just one run over 21 innings, thats a 0.43 ERA the lowest in a single World Series behind Sandy Koufax. Bumgarner owns a 0.25 career ERA through 36 innings in the World Series, making him the all-time leader among all pitchers who have thrown 25 or more innings. Bumgarner set the all-time mark for innings pitched in a single postseason, with his 52.2 surpassing Curt Schilling's 48.1 from 2001. If that is not greatness I do not know what is

True, he won’t get the credit but Bumgarner should go down as the greatest playoff pitcher in history. In 2010, his brilliance was overshadowed by Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, but as the years went by we saw that Bumgarner was the true ace who never broke down when the pressure was turned up to 10.

Yep, I can't understand for the life of me why guys do that going into first, the only time that's an acceptable play is if the throw takes the first baseman off of the bag and you dive to avoid a swipe tag, otherwise it's foolish.

I understand it’s still a hard park to hit homeruns in. Which makes the giants hitting so many homeruns even more impressive. My point before was that the fact that the final game took place in the royals stadium does not at all have any significance on that sacrifice fly like the video was trying to claim it did. There point that because the royals have a deep outfield therefore there was enough room to tag up and score was dumb and made zero sense because guess what would happen if the royals didn’t have a deep outfield. Royals fan here. Man, I wanted that win, but MadBum had our number the whole series. We had a magical run, and it literally felt like he was the only player that could stop us. Take the very next year as an example, we won so many clutch games. Thankfully didn't have to face MadBum that year! Incredible respect for him.

The Royals weren't going away , and as a Giants fan it literally felt like we only had 1 pitcher on the roster by the time game 7 ended . It took an all-time historic performance by a future HOF pitcher to pull that one off .

As a lifelong SF Giants fan, I remember pacing outside my house in the backyard, smoking like a chimney for the last out of this game. Never been more nervous watching a sports contest. 2001 vs. the Angels taught me it's never over till it's over. After the Giants kicked that ball around CF, I just couldn't watch anymore. My wife told me when they had won and I could come in, where we celebrated together and drank whisky and champagne.
The Giants will probably never win another World Series in my lifetime, and I'm fine with that. I got my share. Bumgarner is a legend. P.S. If the Royals tried to send that runner home; no doubt in my mind Crawford would've thrown him out by 10 feet. Crawford & Posey are two of the most clutch defensive players in MLB history. P.S. I'm really glad the Royals won the championship the following year. Kansas City baseball fans deserved it.

MadBum was a monster that series. Knew KC was done when they put him in. I think his domination in that series led to what we see now in the postseason, with starters coming out of the bullpen

I will NEVER FORGET THIS WORLD SERIES!! Bum was incredible. That Panik play was incredible. What an insane postseason it was for the Giants
Man that was the best time of my life. I was just fresh off the boat and started my international student life in the Bay Area. I played some baseball during my college days in China but never watched any MLB games due to broadcast restrictions at the time. It was a perfect moment for me to start watching the Giants as they were making their historic play off run. The entire dorm stayed together and watched the Game 7. Everyone was cheering and crying and throwing popcorn at each other. It was great. Too bad I didn’t get the chance to go to the parade that coming Friday because of a stupid scheduling problem. Still it was a perfect timing for me to start watching the MLB games.
Linus Tan it was a terrible decision to have the parade on Friday. 1 because it was friday ending during the evening commute and 2 it was on holloween so everything was all messed up. I had to walk 3 and half miles home because the muni wasnt running.

I think you're right, but the Royals weren't scoring on MadBum in that game, I think the pressure of that throw and scenario at least would have given them a better chance than Salvy's following AB. If we're gonna lose either way at least make the finish one for the ages haha. That was an incredible WS!
Madbum's run in 2014 was the most dominant pitching in the postseason I've ever witnessed and I've been watching since the early 90s...don't think I'll ever see a run like it again. Doesn't matter if his regular season stats fall short of other guys, dude will forever be a legend in baseball after what he did in 2014.

How could you not mention B Craw's strong arm at short. He was the cut off man.
I know it has been 2 years but this is a very important detail. This video would be how a third base coach lost the world series by 30 feet if they would have let Craw unload that. He had ball in hand as the runner got to third, and the guys is known for accuracy as much as velocity. Later today is game one of the 2021 Giants v. Dodgers playoffs, and there is a reason people are chanting MVP when he walks out.
A word on Ishikawa; he's a first baseman that was converted into playing left field, as the Giants had no one better, and wanted to keep hiya bat in the line up. He's a journeyman who had the MOST AMAZING homerun to get the Giants into the World Series.
Plus, he's humble and a dedicated follower of Jesus. His story is worth a rewind.

Possibly the most dominant World Series performance ever. He was absolutely unstoppable. Once they brought him in I knew it was over. There was no way the Giants were losing that, no matter how dire it looked at times
This game has a special place in my heart, at the time I was 10 years old and just moved to San Francisco and barely spoke English however me and my dad loved baseball. Even though we are dodgers fans we still caught every giants game on local broadcast and I saw this game with my whole family. That was the last game I saw with my mom. Miss you so much mamá 💙💙🤞

Don’t get me wrong, bumgarner was a beast but I feel like the defensive plays the giants made don’t get enough recognition like panik breaking his belt for that double play or Juan Perez’s catch in bums first inning in the 5th. Could have been a whole different ball game.

Always wish Alex had mentioned that. Waving Gordon in to test Crawford would've been _insanely_ risky, and most likely would've been an easy out at the plate. Crawford has an absolute cannon.
Those Royals teams were so much fun. They had speed to burn and when rosters expanded, the combination of Cain, Dyson, and Gore gave teams absolute fits on the bases. I know people love the home run ball but this series was just plain fun to me. Old School pitching, defense, and speedy baserunning.
They were an incredible two teams to watch, and very well-matched. Both dynamic defenses and clutch hitters, with some very good pitching.

I almost stopped the video when you suggested that Gordon would have scored. He would have been out by a mile. It would have taken screw-ups by Brandon Crawford AND Buster Posey, who are both Gold Glovers.
One thing that almost never gets discussed is that KC could have (and maybe should have) used a pinch hitter for Perez. As was pointed out he got plunked on the leg, so he wasn't going to be able to run. He wouldn't beat out an infield hit, so he would need a clean single. Ned Yost had Jarrod Dyson on the bench who is fast - he could have bunted for a hit, or shown bunt to get the infield moving to account for it. That would have given KC more chances to get the run home.
The other interesting thing about the at bat was that Posey/Bumgarner knew Perez would try to be the hero. Bum never threw a strike - all the pitches were up, designed to get Perez to do exactly what he did - pop out, which is the easiest out to get. Note how Posey starts in a squat, but is already standing up by the time Bum goes through his motions. That was the gameplan, and it worked.
Honestly I see all of these people in the comments suggesting he should have been waived home, but they're only saying that because they saw the other outcome so they assume the alternative would have been better. Can you imagine the fan outrage if he had been thrown out by 20 ft to end the world series? It would have been considered one if the biggest blunders in sports history and all the same people would be wondering what would have happened if Perez had a chance to drive him in. It's completely ludicrous.

Don't care if he is out by mile, fine, but the throw can go off line or he could overthrow catcher. They lost on pop up, not exciting in the slightest, play at plate would have been better. People acting like bad throws don't happen.

@@chazzx1018 Except it's not a "play at the plate", it's a play where the ball gets to Posey and Gordon is at least 20-30 feet away. You don't just need a "bad throw" to score the run, you literally need Brandon Crawford, who was one of the best defensive infielders of the 2010s, to fling the ball to the backstop. Any decision that rests on that is a crap strategy.
Even if you assume that the next batter has only a 5% chance of getting a hit, that's still better odds than Crawford and Posey allowing Gordon (who, again, is out by 20-30 feet on a clean relay) to score.
Holding Gordon at third was unambiguously the correct decision. It just didn't work out for them.

Having the All Star game decide who got home field advantage was incredibly smart! It made the All Star game worth something which is way more than you could say about other sports all star games.

I get goosebumps thinking about how dominate mad bum was , it was like he had this quite killer mentality that everyone was afraid of , he had the greatest world series as a pitcher in history !! I was a senior in high school when this game happened
An ep on the Minneapolis Miracle would be awesome. So much backstory there, there's the 2009 NFC Championship and rivalry from bountygate, Vikings history of choking at the end of playoff games, Sean Payton continuing his history of mocking the other team, the fact that Case Keenum is QB and not Bridgewater or Bradford. Even though the Eagles won the next week it was a crazy moment with a lot of stuff to rewind to.
I disagree, I feel as it wouldn't represent anything to do with Minnesota well. The Minneapolis Miracle didn't lead to a Superbowl win for Minnesota, instead proved their fluke the next week when they got demolished by the Eagles. If you mention 2009 and the Saints, you're just showing the fact that Minnesota lost to the eventual Superbowl champs. People overrate the Minneapolis Miracle because It was a big moment in the playoffs, but in order to make that video...It would have to be about the Eagles' run that defied all odds. That would be way more interesting with the Wentz/Foles situation, the whole Andy Reid/Chip Kelly/Doug Pederson transition, the "Meaningless" Miracle, and the Bill Belichick-Malcolm Butler feud.
I heartily disagree. The Eagles were obviously the better team last year, but that story is not nearly as juicy as the story of the Miracle. And everyone already knows the story of the Eagles run, but there's a lot of subsurface tension between the Vikings and Saints that most fans outside of Minnesota and New Orleans don't pick up on.
It's a lot like the Immaculate Reception. Sure the Steelers lost the next week to the undefeated '72 Dolphins, but that's not super important to the play. It's still its own separate incredible story, part of (in this case the start of) a compelling rivalry with the Raiders, and one of the craziest and best known plays in the history of the NFL.
I mean that I see that play everywhere as this "incredible moment". It was an error by a rookie safety, on a young secondary that without him and Lattimore the Saints would've only dreamed of the playoffs. Diggs just had to catch the ball and run forward. In hindsight, people spoke more about the Williams error than the supreme effort made by the Vikings. It would've been an epic moment if the Vikings beat the Eagles and went on to face the Pats with home field advantage. Maybe it could've been one of those foundational plays that Minnesota fans look to when they finally have a championship to go with their illustrious history of hall of fame players and coaches. However it represents nothing more than a rookie who made an error. To me, this has nothing on other moments like the Tuck Rule game, the Malcolm Bulter interception, or the David Tyree helmet catch.
Sure it wasn't the most impressive athletic play, but this series is specifically about about famous sports plays with a lot of buildup. I mean so far we've had a foul pop-out and a mid-range jump shot. Not brilliant athletic plays, just brilliant stories. Diggs high point catch and effort to stay in bounds shows more athletic prowess than either of those, but that's still not the point. What makes it an incredible moment, and more than just a mistake by a rookie safety, is the backstory, which is what this series is about to begin with.
I think I can see why we disagree though. You point to 3 great plays that led to Super Bowl wins. But most of the great NFL moments we remember didn't lead there, and it honestly doesn't make them any less great. You can go down the list, from the Immaculate Reception, to the Sea of Hands, The Drive, Both Miracles at the Meadowlands, The Miracle at the Met, Ghost to the Post, the Beast-Quake Game, The Bills-Oilers Comeback, The Music City Miracle. All awe-inspiring moments. You can always look to the future to make them seem like they didn't matter, but this show is about the opposite: rewinding.

Ah, memories. One of the best moments of my life to that point. MadBum put on what I felt was one of the most heroic sporting performances of all time not only in game 7 but also the two he started. Easily the most dominant pitching performance in WS history (that I'm aware of, but don't quote me because I absolutely could be wrong). I will have love for that dude no matter what he does or where he goes in his career and beyond. Awesome video, thanks for that!

I can remember watching this game from my house in Kansas City, this video was a little painful to watch but also extremely well done. It’s so cool that you guys break down all of the different circumstances leading up to that nail biter ninth inning. Gordon’s possible inside the parker, Perez being hit, and even the All-Star game situation.

I@colby the 2015 royals were a fluke. In 2016 they were .500 with basically the same team. They had a great bullpen and a mediocre team. If will harris didn’t suck in game 4 of the ALds the Astros would have beaten the royals in 2015. Harris also cost the Astros the 2019 World Series.

Do one of these on the royals winning the series in 15. In hindsight its pretty remarkable for a team that hadn't been in the postseason; yet alone a World Series in 29 years to go to the World Series, lose, COME BACK, and win. I am biased but I feel like theres a lot to unpack there.
Yeah they didn't pull a Rangers, who lost WS consecutive years in '10 and '11.
