  • Vehicles turn into the bike lanes on a daily basis, putting cyclists in danger. Lanes are separated by curb and clearly marked yet drivers are still confused about what lane they should be in.

As a pedestrian I have stood in the cycle way blocking cars using it as their own road to get around a one way street. When I have pointed out that they are on a cycle way their response has always been 'yes I know but I need to get to this street.' Tough for them as I don't move until after they have. Passing cyclists have always thanked me.

This reminds me of cars going up the streetcar lanes when getting off the Gardiner at Spadina.. I believe that's generally out of towners though, but you can't really blame them for not understanding how to navigate something they've never seen before. Even with signage, sometimes just paying attention to pedestrians, cyclists, lights, other cars, and directions to a place you've never been can be too much to handle (for some).

Driving in Seattle I noticed that they put these cement strips to protect turning lanes and I was required to swing to the far right of those cement strips.( this is very different from our laws here) Knowing this I would have done exactly what these cars are doing unless I saw a clear "NO LEFT TURN" sign. True. But even then this path is pretty clearly marked with clear bicycle signs on the ground, a yellow line in the middle, and a low concrete separator. How blind are you if you don't notice this clearly is a cycle lane. Off course it can always be made clearer, but man, come on, you have to be a blind idiot not to notice this cycle lane. Getting a driver's licence clearly is too easy, even in Canada.
Here in Belgium where I live, there's now even a small start to considering making the theoretical driver's test a repeated one every 5-10 years to make sure people keep up with and/or remember all rules of the road. And I'm all for it.
I'm a cyclist without a driver's licence but I did do my theoretical exam years ago. Got 49 out of 50 correct. And the one I got wrong I still find unclear and dubious to this day. But almost every day I'm amazed at how bad people WITH actual drivers licences' knowledge is of the rules of the road. It's insane some of these people are allowed to drive. The times I've been shouted at or gestured at by drivers when I'm the one following the rules of the road I can't even count anymore. I read an article a few weeks ago where they took 3 young drivers from my country that had their licence for only two years, and they made them take their driver's test again as a journalistic test. 1 failed, and the other two made it by the skin of their teeth. That's only after two years, in a country that has far more strict driver's education and exams than Canada or the USA. Can you imagine how bad this has to be with drivers that have been driving for 30 - 40 years? I've actually had discussions with (mostly older) drivers that simply didn't know certain EXTREMELY important rules, simply because they didn't exist when they did their driver's tests. And many others just forgot certain rules, or learned them wrong.
Mandatory repeated driver's tests every X years, that alone would make such an improvement in driving behaviour. People always seem to forget driving a car is actually operating 2 ton heavy machinery and a huge responsibility that lies with the operator first.

Having people crossing left and right, cars inches from you in all directions and people honking non stop can get overwhelming and give you tunnel vision. A lot of the bike lanes and multi lane roads within Toronto confuse the hell out of me every time I go there. I’ve never gone into a bikers lane before, but I’ve definitely veered towards one before realizing my mistake and taking a sharp turn. Even more signs doesn’t really help the situation, I just believe that it’s a culture gap between us townies and the big boy Toronto. Hope people put less hate on the first few drivers, they clearly just made a mistake.

CBC brought the issue to the City but as you noted, they considered them isolated incidents. Just complete ignorance. The fact that I managed to catch 4 incidents on my morning commutes over a short period of time, certainly suggests that they're not isolated. Imagine how many vehicles would be caught if someone were to sit the entire day watching.

I wonder if a singular bollard in between the bike lanes would help with this? (As well as more signs) Just place the bollard at the entrance and exit of the lanes. Afterward, they should ensure there is enough space around the bollard for only cyclists to comfortably ride by. Also, painting the entrance and exits of the lanes green for about 10ft should help with visibility as well.

If folk keep mistaking bike paths for roads I'd say they need to make some design changes.. so that it's clear even from across the intersection. Most people don't, nor are able to scan road paintings across intersections, especially the ones that are aligned to their line of sight. Most people scan the physical space of the roadway. This gives a lot more information in much less time than trying to locate and read road paintings. One of those flexible fiberglass bollards would work as a band aid until they could work out a proper design.

Also, the guy in the Porsche at the end of the video, that's an SUV with more than enough ground clearance to ride over that teeny curb....and if for some reason he did manage to damage his ride, call it a dummy tax and be done with it.
