    These kinds of videos are the ones I enjoy the most. My dad was a combat infantryman during WWII. He always mentioned that he should have bought a surplus jeep after he got home in 1945. He was 93 when he passed and I looked for one that I could buy one or even get him in a ride. He would have enjoyed it. Dad passed without getting the ride. I am glad you have with your father. I am enjoying it as you enjoyed it with your father. I still might do it in his memory. Such as it is, I thoroughly enjoy it. Thank you for posting your video.

    This is one of the best production videos of a restoration of a WW2 vehicle I’ve ever seen. The restoration itself looks to e fantastic. The video quality is is exceptional, oh, and the music is magnificent. The orchestrated music was beyond beautiful and so thing to behold. This production is by far the most professionally produced I have ever seen of this type of content. Thank you for a great experience!

  • @w.w.2restorations.vehicles698

    PJ, really great video man!! I will be receiving my 2nd. weasel in a few weeks. I was looking carefully at your restoration and all the nice work you did. I have allot experience with the tracks and have rebuilt 6 pair, soon to be 7. Your track in this video is too loose. T.M. 9-1772 says the last bogie wheel pair needs to be 2 1/2" higher than the pair in front on the same wheel carrier. This measurement can be decided by measuring the distance from the ground to the center of the last bogie axle and adding 2 1/2". Then tighten the leaf spring stops on your front dog leg spindles until the desired measurement is achieved. This will prevent a track from being thrown and the drive sprocket from jumping in between the grouzers. Again, great restoration!!

      Just reading this. Thanks for the great advice! I have T.M. 9-1772 as well. The video was the first run of the tracks for any distance and I've since tighted them after a bit of break-in time. Good luck with your new Weasel!

  • @scottleslie2592

    Universal Carrier couldn't swim that I'm aware of, and if it was so vaunted, why did the British want the M29 to use to invade Norway, or use them to in the Scheldt Estuary in Belgium & Holland, or use them in every river crossing up to the Rhine? Bren/Universal carrier was a prime mover for a light MG or artillery, Hell some ended up gutted and used as armored tracked trailers. Really an adaptation of the light tanks then in use, able to keep up with them.

    • @voiceofraisin3778
      @voiceofraisin3778 Před 4 lety

      Dunno, why did the US army bother buying Jeeps when everyone could have had an M29?
      The point of the Universal carrier was to provide a cheap multi-purpose vehicle with light armour for the minimum cost. That meant buying in commonly available civilian engines and as many parts from existing models as possible, the Carden-Lloyd suspension system had been sold around the world so spares were available on every continent, they even used track warping to steer to save manufacturing a complex gearbox.
      There were amphibious Univeral carriers but the experiment wasnt worth the effort, on the other hand they could be troop carriers, mortar carriers, flamethrowers, rocket launchers, engineering vehicles,, radio vehicles, artillery tractors, cable layers and most other things you could think of.

      Even empty the weasel had less than a foot of hull out of the water, so a few troops and some waves would spell disaster.

      The Weasel was discontinued shortly after WW2 and used for arctic exploration. There was testing with recoilless rifles mounted on M29C models during the war but I don’t know of any mounted ferret launchers.

      Apologies for the late reply. The track bands require a modification to the Grousers. You’ll need to see what version of 20” track you have but the bands were made out of old rock conveyor and purchased from snakeriver4x4.com/weasel-parts in Eastern Idaho.

    Interesting to use bed liner? on the trousers , how has that preformed ?
    Impressive amount of work to bring it back to life .
    What are the plans in the future , will it go to a museum ?

    • @pjmansisidor2018
      @pjmansisidor2018  Před 3 lety

      Apologies for such a late reply! The bed liner was used primarily as a rust inhibitor for the grousers. In retrospect, I’d probably use an epoxy primer/coat to protect the tracks as the bed liner does not stand up to hard contact with ground abrasions.

    • @pjmansisidor2018
      @pjmansisidor2018  Před 6 lety

      I went to (www.snakeriver4x4.com/forsale.php) and talked to Tom Howell. You'll need to know the model of you grousers as there are several kinds. However, if your tracks already have modified rubber belts holding them together Tom may be able to set you up with replacements. If the rubber road pads are bad on to bottom of the grousers then you and the rest of us weasel owners are in the same boat finding a way to repair/replace those. There really is no good way most of us have found.

    It was also not as successful as the British Universal Carrier (aka Bren Carrier) which pre-dated the Weasel by several years.

    • @pjmansisidor2018
      @pjmansisidor2018  Před 6 lety +3

      Success of either vehicle is relative to the purpose they served. The Weasel's 20" wide tracks made it ideal for navigating snow, mud and swap terrain. Signal Corp units used them extensively to lay communications wire in rough terrain out of direct fire zones to avoid cable damage. It was also successful in M29C 'Water weasel' amphibious version in the Pacific theater and after WWII usage for arctic exploration. The narrow tracks of the Bren were not as useful in these conditions but it was utilized for tasks it did do well such as fast moving, light armor for scouting and front line re-supply with mounted firepower.If you judge success simply by production numbers then you could also say canned beans were more successful than Spam, just because they've been around longer. I'm sure most soldiers have differing opinions on the success of canned beans or Spam too.

    • @noonsight2010
      @noonsight2010 Před 6 lety

      Interesting points but it is commonly remarked that US forces were envious of the Bren carrier which was a highly effective vehicle. I made no remarks as to production numbers as that is a risible comparison.

    • @jayirving6996
      @jayirving6996 Před 5 lety +1

      M29 was way more successful then Bren... they continued to use it after the war and then again in Korea, many were and are still used by private company's. ya don't see any bren's on Craigslist do ya!
