You probably know this, but a coat of shellac before painting will prevent the knots from showing through. Fun video.

Good advice about the shellac! I should have mentioned it.

@@granthutchins2016 Thank you for adding so much informative information in your comment. You are correct on all the benefits of using Shellac. I use it mainly to seal in wood tannins and potential bleed thru but like you mentioned it’s a fantastic pre-coat to poly. Thank you for watching and adding your thoughts.

Thanks Bethany. Minwax Polyurethane has been a quality product since I began using it back in the 90's

Hi I was wondering if you would consider doing a light colored wood spray can top coat test like the black one , preferably in white to prevent yellowing this testing and the results were interesting and informative

Varathane Oil based semi gloss is the best I've tried. Perfect coverage, no clogs. Every bit of spray in the can is useable, no waste or sputtering

That was very interesting Bethany, Thanks for taking the time to do a good comparison. I just started using shellac as a sealer coat, and I've been experimenting with different topcoats too. I haven't found any one type that stands out above the others, but I've enjoyed the results I've gotten so far with (Deft) spray can lacquer I've been using the Helmsman spar varnish for years on outdoor projects with good results. Now after seeing your video I want to try the oil-modified water-based poly

Thanks for tuning in. Glad you enjoyed it! Often times these experiments are needed because let’s face it there are numerous products out there and you just don’t know what will or what will not work. I just used the first spray topcoat in the video over a black painted cabinet and it looks fantastic.

@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 It seems more difficult now than ever to determine the best product, just because there are so many more choices available!

@@barry3400 that’s very true. Add to that some companies change their product. What was once a fantastic product sometimes becomes lack luster.

Yes, thats very true as well. Although there are exceptions, cheapening products to achieve a lower price point at the expense of quality and durability seems to be the american business strategy. I am currently shopping for HVLP setup to up my finishing game. I've narrowed it down to an Apollo, or a Fuji top-of-the-line turbine sprayer. So far, I like the Apollo turbines, but I prefer the Fuji spray gun. More to follow soon. thanks for you great videos!

Can you spray an oil based over water based paints?

I always add a bit of paint to my top coat, especially on dark colors. Try it 😊 You won’t get those streaks.

Thanks for the tip! What topcoat are you using? In the past I've added some black paint to a water based Polycrylic and it still was milky/cloudy.

I’m curious, what brand chalk paint did you use to test these top coats? I’m so glad you did this video. Never have I spray painted a top coat. This is very informative. Have you ever tried using bulls eye shellac spray for a top coat.

@@suesherman3587 I used Debi’s Design Diary DIY black chalk paint. This shade is called Black Dress. I have not tried a spray Shellac. That might be worth a try. The only negative about Shellac they don’t have different sheens.
