  • Step into the world of #baseball #mentorship with Mike Sweeney. Once a legendary Major League Baseball player for the #KansasCityRoyals City Royals, Mike now devotes himself to the nuances of guiding young athletes towards excellence on and off the field. With host Eric Hosmer, a former Royal himself, they explore poignant stories of Mike's journey as both a mentor and a former player, highlighting the deep connections he has fostered within the Kansas City Royals organization and beyond. From emotional tales of his interactions with budding stars to reflections on his own role models, Mike sheds light on the transformative power of mentorship.
This episode offers an intimate look at the legacy left by a devoted player who transitioned into a guiding force for the next generation, underscoring the profound impact of leadership in sports. Tune in to hear how Mike Sweeney’s dedication to nurturing young talent has crafted a lasting impact on the lives of many athletes, illustrating the enduring influence of a true mentor in the world of baseball.
Sweeney shares a deeply personal story about his son, MJ, which is sure to resonate with anyone who understands the trials and triumphs of pursuing a passion, or being a parent to someone who is. Mike opens up about MJ’s journey through the competitive world of baseball, from high expectations and draft day decisions to unexpected setbacks that test both skill and spirit. The story highlights not only the challenges faced by young athletes but also the role of a parent in guiding and supporting their child through highs and lows. Mike’s recounting of how he helped MJ navigate these pivotal moments is a compelling narrative of resilience and paternal love, offering invaluable insights into the balancing act of fostering talent while ensuring the child's joy in the game remains intact.
During the episode, Justin Su'a and Peter Moylan enrich the conversation with their unique perspectives and experiences, bringing layers of depth to the dialogue with Mike Sweeney. Justin, with his expertise in mental performance coaching, delves into the psychological aspects of mentorship and leadership, offering practical advice and insightful reflections on maintaining mental resilience in professional sports. Peter Moylan, with his affable demeanor and years of experience in the clubhouse, shares anecdotes and wisdom on the importance of team dynamics and camaraderie, providing a lively counterpoint to the discussion on mentorship. Together, they complement Mike’s stories with broader insights on the mental and emotional demands faced by athletes, making the conversation a holistic exploration of life in baseball.
Tune in to discover how Sweeney’s mentorship extends beyond the field, touching the hearts of his family and players alike.

Had the pleasure of coaching against Mike Sweeney a few years back as he coached his younger son. He’s the truth, calm demeanor, kind, great approach with a phenomenal team. His presence just makes you want to be a better man.

Love this podcast and as a life long Royals fan much respect to both you and Sweeney. You guys are a part of what has made Royals baseball a rich and proud tradition in KC, even through the tough times. I feel we have been so lucky as an organization to have such great men! Will always be Royal!

So after the last podcast with Totty and sitting down and talking with my son about how he has been able to handle the situations around him and bounce back and win the gold/platinum glove this past year is on par with my own sons and some of his struggles in baseball. When you sent the message about Mike's podcast coming I was looking forward to it...literally the first 3-4 minutes are heart wrenching...honestly thank you for doing this. So many dad's, including myself that need to hear this. I cant wait to finish up the rest but wanted to get my thoughts out on the first few minutes. Thank you, honestly...this means so much and it's such a great message.

I came from MA to a KC fan fest back in 2009 with my baseball loving grandmother. Mike was incredibly interested and genuinely caring. Some people come off as if they have some ulterior motive or putting on a front but Mike is the real deal.
Such a great positive podcast in a sea of athletes being gossiping naysayers.

I was MJ”s teammate in high school at St. Augustine High School. He was as great teammate and a good kid. Sucks that happened to him.

Love Coach Sweeney, would play against saints all the time growing up. One of my most proud moments on the field was when I made a nice play on third on a ball off of his sons bat and said it was one of the nicest plays he’s seen made in a tourney , made me feel stoked

37:54 Agree with Sweeney. Greinke would be awesome to have on the podcast! Truly a unique player and a master at his craft. Went through a lot and came out a future HOFer. Might take some convincing to get him on, but he’d be a great guest.

Just met Coach Sweeney on a pregame tour at Angel Stadium this weekend. He genuinely seemed so humble and we had a brief conversation before taking photos together. He seemed more excited to meet me, and left a great impression. These young Royals have one awesome mentor!

The COVID drag on youth sports is a real thing. In 2038, we might see a deficit of US born talent in all sports. Will there be players that will get drafted in all sports? Yes, of course. But I think we will see a slight loss of talent level or athleticism. Kids that would have played sports either were late to the party or decided to play Call of Duty instead.
