  • After almost 15 years Sonos replaces their old and tired streamer, the ZonePlayer, now known as the Connect. Like the Connect the new Sonos Port is a streamer that integrates your stereo in the Sonos ecosystem. Time to have a look.

    Thank you Hans for you very useful and informative videos. This is the second time I had come across your videos and I would like to thank you for your very well structured content. In reference to a statement in this video where you had mentioned that the music files/library are kept on the PC or NAS and they should be on all the time for SONOS to be able to access them. I am sure you you are much educated then me and must have only forgotten to mention that these files can be kept on the Router if the Router supports sharing files through USB Stick or external USB Drive. I used this when I did not have NAS at this time nor did I want to keep the PC on full time.
    Thank you for your great videos and take care.
    Best Regards,

    Nice review of the port. I have one, because I have other sonos players for background music and news in the rest of my house. My family would have mutinied if I put in a different streamer for the main system. I have found that upgrading the power supply, and using an ifi ipurifier spdif 2 helps quite a bit with the quality of its digital output into my ares 2 DAC. I was actually surprised that it all worked as well as it does.

      Sonos has a very stable system and the sound quality of the Port is clearly better than that of its predecessor. But it is not the best, sound wise.

      There are many around, see my playlist on network players: czcams.com/video/f4FU1tqZdeU/video.html. You can also go for a server program that can work with hardware from a broad range of brands: DLNA or Roon. I explain about DLNA a bit in the review of the Advance Paris WTX StreamPro (czcams.com/video/rG-biUayskU/video.html).Many streamers are DNLA compatible, sometimes called UPnP AV compatible. BTW the two brands you mention are not. For Roon you might watch this video. It gives an introduction but it is already a few years old and there have been numerous updates to the system. You find all of my Roon videos in this playlist: czcams.com/video/yrRfhWcLoqA/video.html. Roon works with all products that are 'Roon Ready' like the Bluesound products, but Roon also works with Sonos, Airplay and Squeezebox. The way you can select the right product for a given location. A top product for the living and a simple solution for the children's room or garage.

      If I remember well, you need a 12 volt version. You can check the voltage on the original power supply.

    Hi Hans, thanks for the review. I read on your page that any questions for advise should be posted on your channel, so here it goes: I am looking to upgrade the sound quality of my setup and think I can gain the most by replacing my current streamer, the sonos zp90. The sonos is currently digitally connected to an Anthem AVR510 (for which I love the room correction). I am using the DAC of the AVR510. I will check if I used digital interlinks ;-). I am not using the amplifying part of the Anthem, as it is connected to an Arcam P777 seven channel amplifier. The Arcam is powering zone A from the Anthem (5.1) and zone B (stereo). The front speakers of Zone A are self built scanspeak speakers, which I were build by Klare in Hoorn. I have multiple sonos connects in my home, so I started looking at the Sonos Magna mod, which you reviewed. I'm not in the market for a EUR 4000,- streamer, but am willing to invest between 1000-2000 EUR for significant quality improvement w.r.t. my source. Anyway, long story and would be great if you could respond! Thanks in advance.

    My English is not that great. You say surround 4:35 that you need a spezific type of kable when you connect the digital outputs of port and external dac, or you lose sound quality. What cable you meen or can you recommend one?
    Thanks

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  Před 3 lety +1

      For digital connections you need a cable that is suited for the connection used. For the digital output of the Port that is a 75 ohm RCA to RCA cable. Every audio shop sells them and often call then just digital cable.

    I always found Sonos Play speakers rather impressive for what they are but 2 things have kept me away from Sonos.
    1) limited to 16/44 and 2) the inability to play multiple genre random playlists. The Squeezebox LMS has been doing that for ages. Get with the program guys.
