Lotus Excel - A hidden gem

  • Today, I’m going to tell you a story about a beautiful but underrated car - Lotus Excel produced from 1982 to 1992.
The beginning of the Eighties was a very difficult time for Lotus. The situation was more or less improved by the partnership with Toyota. So, the new Lotus Excel combined the Lotus platform and Lotus engine with a drivetrain, transmission, and, partially, suspension of the Toyota Supra. And this actually gave a very good result - the car was nice, great-driving, and very reliable.
The Excel was a car with ideal handling and cornering, and it was famous for this. It was fast enough, and comfortable enough, so you could get a lot of pleasure and joy from driving it on curvy country roads.
And it had an absolutely beautiful sound. This was probably the best handling and sounding European car of the first half of the Eighties.
A real hidden gem of British car history.

I have a Calypso Red 1986 Excel SE that I have owned for 20 years. It has been very reliable and is always a joy to drive. It’s certainly a attention getter too, as there are so few left on the road now & it is rare to see another.

Great video, very accurate data! I own a '92 excel S.E. RHD that was British born and then later imported to Germany. Then imported again by me to the states and one of the very few U.S. based owners. I know of ~10 excels in the country now. Very reliable car, so fun amd always getting looks and comments.

My mum had both an Elite and then an Excel which she loved. And it was also mostly reliable, great car!
