  • So-in this brand new video I take the first few bars of Coltrane's epic jazz masterpiece "Giant Steps" and show you how to navigate through the changes using a great and practical mix of arpeggiated figures plus some simple chromatic elements to spice up your playing... Then, I give you some pointers on how to use those ideas to move this around the fingerboard. This makes for a really musical study which can both increase technique and fluidity around the neck too...

    Good stuff. I must say, after many years of playing, performing, recording and teaching all genres of music,(and being pretty proficient) the old Coltrane killer is still a sticking point with me. I like your approach of thinking in terms of staying "in position" while using notes from the previous chord to formulate the pa ttern of the next chord. In a strange sort of way, it's kind of a combination of Paul McCartney and prog rock. LOL. To THAT, I can relate!

    A beautiful and articulate lesson as always Rufus. Thank you. I love how clean your notes sound. Would you mind telling us how you achieve the sound you get?

      Thanks so much Schalk! Tone wise, I am pretty old school-these strings are kinda dead, bass passive, on back pick up only. Strings are nickel (LaBella Rx 45-100as I recall...) I am goin thru a Trickfish Minnow-a little lows boosted, and added some 'verb in either Logic or GarageBand depending. I actually really don't like the "bass amp" presets -so usually just boost tiny bit of mids in the EQ ...No real amp or cabinet. And Interface is a very inexpensive Focusrite Scarlett 2 channel...Although that may change

    Your video inspired by to finally take on this beast. I came up with a complete arrangement for it. The solo was a struggle but I think it turned out pretty well. czcams.com/video/M6sFp798aVg/video.html

    Thank you for the great lesson. I just have one question - how did you achieve that tone? What did you do specifically? (compression, eq, strings..)

    • @rufusbass
      @rufusbass  Před 10 měsíci +1

      LaBella nickel strings. A touch of compression and usual;y a hint of reverb for solo stuff ( typically a tc electronic Hall of Fame reverb pedal)

    Rufus, when's your book coming out? All this stuff takes time to digest and CZcams clips are a bit too ephemeral to do this deep shit justice.

    Hi Rufus,Do you NOT change the strings for get that tone ? hugs from ARG

    • @rufusbass
      @rufusbass  Před 2 lety +2

      Marcelo! EXACTLY :). I really don't love a super zingy tone, and so these are older nickel round rounds, which almost have a flat wound vibe
