Crazy Chicken Bus Journey Through Guatemala

- The cheapest and by far most interesting way of getting around in Guatemala is to take a chicken bus, an old American school bus that was exported, spruced up with some fresh paint / chrome and then used for public transportation in Guatemala. It's what the locals use to get around and one of our favourite Guatemala travel experiences and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Yup. I took those the whole summer of 2003 while doing environmental field work for the Alliance for International Reforestation. We are going back to visit the original village I stayed in and I am researching transportation options. I think it would be hilarious to take the donors I am brining with me on the chicken bus from the airport to Chimal! thanks so much for this video! This is exactly what the experience was like. there were chickens on the buses sometimes, a lady squeezed out her hair on my lap, and another time a lady sat on my lap.

Actually I live in Dallas Texas but I born and raised in those chicken busses, my had two of them, a lot of fun, histories and really good food...

Thanks so much Eibol! Yes they were so cheap. A 20min bus ride was usually less than 0.25 usd pp and this one from Pana to Antigua (3 hours) was only 5 usd pp 🤯👍🏻
I remember my first time on one of those man it was crowded! Love the iconic art of those buses wish they had some for show in the US
I had a cousin who owned buses like that , and they would put 12 gear manual transmission and turbo.

When you travel pubilc bus you can meet people with crates with chickens or boxes with onion
