Thanks so much! I have my first tele, with an ashtray style bridge, and I would like to go modern. This let me know what I need to think about,

I have a problem where the saddle on the low E is so far back that the string sits perpendicularly, as opposed to be slanted at an angle. It's the only position where the intonation is good. Is that gonna 'cause any problems? Would a modern style bridge help?

It's quite common for this to happen, the saddle needs to be wound back that it's in line with the hole the string comes out of. It's not ideal but it usually doesn't cause any issues.
