杜鹃花, commonly known as the Azalea or Rhododendron, is a beautiful flowering plant that comes in various colors and shapes. It is often admired for its vibrant blooms and is considered a symbol of
hope, love and beauty in many cultures.
This spritely song begins, first espousing the stunning azalea blooms in spring and goes on to describe the couple’s happy memories during this time. In the middle, there is a tinge of sadness as the village girl wanders alone thinking of her lover who has gone to war, and yearns for his victorious return.
First written in the 1940s, tonight’s rendition is arranged by local composer, Phoon Yew Tien.
