This melancholic masterpiece by prolific composer Edward Elgar reflects on the duality and ephemerality of dreams and the irreversible consequence they bring. Contrasting the joy of a dream
with the despair of eventual reality, Elgar conveys the idea that a dream cannot be restored once it is broken. This duality is reflected both in the melodies, voicing, and structure of the piece, adding a
reflective depth to the emotion conveyed in the serenade.
