The Goddess Of Sex & War

- So when it comes to Norse Mythology, everyone always talks about Thor and Loki, throw Odin and Tyr in there for good measure, and maybe some Heimdall and you'd think that's all there is. Thing is though... Norse Mythology legit has two of the coolest goddesses in all of mythology - I'm looking at you Freyja and Hel. Rest assured, I'll be covering Hel in great detail another time, but today, it's time for the goddess of sex, beauty, lust, love and war to shine: Freyja. You might not know her - but you're about to. From her connections to the valkyries, to her many lovers, to her being the reason the Aesir gods enjoy peace with the Vanir.... there is a lot to talk about in this episode.
Episode 5 Of Keeping Up With The Norse Gods - Lust, Love, War: Freyja

Notes:
More than Greek mythology, Norse mythology is mess: It's disjointed, disconnected, full of contradictions and different versions... you really have to piece a puzzle together when telling any story. I mean, people can't even agree on whether Freyja and Frigg are the same goddess... so, of course, I have to take my personal brush to this and touch up bits and pieces to tell this story my way, by sifting through all the different variations that have come to be over thousands of years of these stories being retold over and over. For the sake of this video - and all my videos - I try to streamline all of these tales and versions as much as possible and occasionally I might leave out some details that might make the videos less fun (though, to be honest, I think in this one I really didn't leave out any details).
So... is this accurate and well researched? Absolutely. Is this the only interpretation or way of telling you about Freyja? No, but it's the way I like it the most.
Get All My Artwork & Support The Channel:
I get a lot of questions about my artwork and where it’s from or rather who draws it. Well the answer is that I create it - I don’t draw it. I use AI to create the artwork, using specific prompts, specific style influences from 18th and 19th century artists, and I spend about 6 hours per video just on the artwork. Each video has roughly double the artwork of what you actually see in the video, so a lot of it is unused. The good news here though is that you can get all that artwork on my Patreon - the artwork I do use, and the artwork I don’t use. Plus, by subscribing to my Patreon you are making a major contribution to Briefed and helping me to keep this channel going, because this is my full time job and the survival of the channel and quality of the videos greatly depends on said support. In return for supporting, you get more than the artwork though - you also get exclusive videos and producer credit, as well as access to a producer group that gets to vote on thumbnails, gets behind the scenes etc.
If you choose to become a Patron - thank you. I do not take it for granted.

A lot of people ask me about my sources, and… to be honest, they are a mixed bag. One major source is my lifelong interest in storytelling and mythology. Another is the beautiful endless library that is the internet, and, third, I read the occasional book from time to time, which I’m happy to recommend to you, but also… I’m planning to write my own books on mythology, so, in due time it will be…:

There is a theory that Freya and Frig were originally the same goddess.
yup I touch on that at the end of the video - you'll probably get there in a couple of minutes actually
Or, that Freyja might be the Dawn Goddess of the Norse, and Frigg another name for Jörd.
Is this due to how Odin is rumoured to be the same as odr?
It is quite telling, or social commentary if you will, that when Frigg and Freyja seems to split into two the custom of a official mistress on the side (aka "Frilla") seems to gain popularity in the higher classes and seen as a symbol of wealth (because the man had to pay for two households). Some wives even facilitated these Frilla-relations in order to gain to the family's (aka her childrens inheritence) reputation and status and as such were totally ok with the arrangement. That is until a frilla challanged or threathen the wife's place as the queen of the household, which would/could be punished violently.
Anyhow the role Freya often plays in Norse mythology is sort of that of a Frilla. This while Frigga takes the role of a wife, queen and mother.
Yhh even in GOW
"Of course you remember. That's still living in your head rent free"
You have no idea
You're honestly in my top list whenever you put out videos. I like your composition and story telling. I've cleared your library of released videos on all the gods youve done so far.
thank you Andre - I really, really appreciate the support brother. Hope you enjoy/ed this one too
Truly, i send your videos to friends that have interests, (but also lack willingness to read) about the norse mythology. Anything to help. I enjoy it, seems so do they. Even tho they will probably not read this to confrim it lol.
Master story teller, perfect humor, and beautiful artwork. ( and awesome accent ) You my dear are music to my ears.
I love his voice and accent too ❤ story telling is incredible!
Where is the artwork from. So beautiful.
I've been studying asa tru/Norse myth since 1988, and consider myself asatru/Odinist. I have to honestly say your pretty on spot in which you share, and you have good information. I also like your style of story telling, very humorous and informative. Glad I found your channel and I am looking forward to more of your videos.
thank you Russell. that's high praise and much appreciated 🫡
The Dothraki and Jamie Lannister analogy was on point. The Briefed channel is really cookingggggggg❤❤
ikr?! word.
This channel is the number one reason I don't get a damn thing done for the first 20 or so minutes of my day. I get to my desk, I fire up my computer. I notice that I have gotten a notification that a new Briefed video has dropped.... What do we say to the god of returning work emails? Not today.
I so appreciate this deep dive into Freyja. She's such a fascinating goddess, and one of the most beloved and worshiped gods in Scandinavia. As a huge cat-lover, she's top of my list too. Along with Thor (who due to the ancientness of Indo European peoples pretty much always worshipping a Storm God with a similar root name: Donar, Thunar, etc most likely heavily predates what we think of as the Aesir) she was one of the most honored fertility gods as society grew more agrarian.
Cats were considered sacred to her. This could be due to a few reasons. From a stand point of her being a Lady, cats were not exactly native to Scandinavia. They were brought in here and there and really only started to show up more during the Viking age when they were brought back in larger numbers, and for a time, were something only someone with means would have purchased, especially in Iceland where a great deal of our understanding Norse myth is filtered through. The other reason is a more practical one as a fertility goddess. Leave out bowls of milk to honor the beloved animals of Freyja and she'll bless the crops....it will also attract more cats that will eat the mice that eat the crops ;)
I sometimes feel that Freyja gets glossed over a bit. Painted as lusty or haughty. Painted as a object to be bartered. However, we're talking that the goddess that supposed taught Odin Sedre. He couldn't do that on his own. She gets first pick of the fallen, which makes her a death goddess as well. She wants something, the dwarves name their price, and she gets what she wants. She's not tricked into it. She's not forced into it. She uses her empowerment as a sexual being to obtain one of the most famous pieces of Dwarven craft in all of mythology. She rocks.
Can't wait for the next video:)
loved reading that comment. I really appreciate when people take the time to drop these insightful comments that add additional info. thank you, and thank you for the support. next video is on aphrodite and it's even longer ahah. it'll drop on Saturday
Oh yeah. Couldn't wait for this one.
This might be my favorite video so far. Love the detail, and even the "assumptions" that are made here seem like logical connective tissue between the known legends. Great stuff!
makes the comment all the more special 😊 thank you man
I've always been a history buff, but let's be honest: adulthood can be a real drag. Between work and life's never-ending to-do list, my passion for history took a back seat. But, buddy, stumbling into your channel? A total game changer.
I first started watching your vids yesterday. I think I binged like five or six of them in one go. Subscribed and hit that bell quicker than you can say "ancient history" because I can't miss out on whatever you're up to next.
So, what hooked me? Your narrative, man. It is something else. It transports me back to high school, where Mr. McCann used to spin history like it was the best thing imaginable. Watching your films seems like I'm back in his class, but with a new twist. It's more than simply a trip down memory lane; you have something unique going on. You make these old stories and legends feel as if they're occurring now.
Your perspective on the old play is outstanding. You're not simply narrating stories; you're bringing them to life for those like me who believed the magic was vanished. You're like a history magician, guy, making the past come alive in ways that are easily understood now.
Congratulations for your exceptional storytelling abilities. that's as if you're giving us an exclusive backstage access to the old world, and I'm all for that. Every video seems like stepping into a time machine.
And, just for jokes, but honestly, I'm praying to the almighty Briefed right now: keep doing what you're doing. Your channel is a treasure for history aficionados looking to reconnect with their ancestry in the most exciting way imaginable.
Thank you so much for reigniting my interest in history. You're doing something fantastic here.
man this is such a beautiful comment. thank you so much really. reading that meant a lot - I appreciate you for this Stuart. And, don't worry - I'll keep em coming. Next upload day is tomorrow.

Was coming to comments to ask about the freyja and frigg confusion but got my answer. Looked it up as well and got like nothing from the internet and i was left more confused.
As always an excellent video.
I think Freyja might be a Dawn Goddess too. There was a video made by Survive the Jive in which he highlights several important points about her like: her amber tears, high sexual appetite and several lovers. Many of these things are shared with Eos/Aphrodite (Aphrodite might be a later offshoot of Eos, yet she preserves an archaic tradition in which she is the daughter of Zeus). Also, the Dawn Goddess in Indo-European traditions is the sister (twin sister maybe) of the Divine Horse Twins. Helen of Troy (another possible dawn goddess) is sister of the Horse Twins, Brigid in Ireland is the sister of Áengus and Freyja clearly has a twin brother in Freyr. The Anglo-Saxons had Eástre/Eostre and it is believed that she is the Dawn Goddess of the AS.
Some sources:
Taliesin's Map: The comparative guide to Celtic Mythology by J. Dolan.
The gods of the Celts and the Indo-Europeans by Garret Olmsted
JIVE TALK: Is Freyja the same goddess as Ostara? - Name of Surive the Jive's video about this topic.
survive the jive. never heard of it, gonna check that out. to add to that: Eos also had an affair with ares, who of course is mainly Aphrodites partner - so that adds to eos=aphrodite
@@Briefed_Mythology
Exactly. This trope is shared between Fand and Cú Chulainn in Irish Myth. Fand is the spouse of Manannán Mac Lír, who might be a god associated with the heavenly fires (not precisely smithing) and she also has an affair with Cú Chulainn. Then Manannán arrives a places a veil between both lovers and causes that Fand will forget Cú Chulainn.
I love your videos. Freja is one of my favorite Goddesses. ❤
Great video keep it up 👍🏼
Love your work man, im not much for comments but ill leave this here for you :)
that makes the comment all the more special. I appreciate it. thank you man
I found you on TikTok and now I'm obsessed.

13:51 nice video.
One note though. When you say Aesir, it reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Thanks for the information.
Dude your is phenomenal x your channel like PhD meets CZcams. Good 👍
Your videos are great, I'd Love to see a video of Freyja's Stepmother, Skadi.
I’m glad I found this channel I love this stuff. I wish he could link with a game company and get us so fun adventure games intertwining these types of stories but not in a god if war type of way
maaaan I would love to do that haha. I hope a game company hits me up one day
Thanks to you my friends have to hear my non-stop yapping about mythology
Late again sorry man been kinda busy But great video!
My favorite part is your dog in the background 🥹❤️
mine too 🥹
Another superb video! And "Hi!" to Zizou!
Bro I love these videos, maybe you can do a video on Pan from Greek mythology, he’s like a forgotten god and I think it would make a funny and interesting video.
good idea actually bro. I'll look into that idea
@@Briefed_Mythologyoh shit this the first time a CZcams/Creator has responded to me I appreciate this, and no problem your videos are the best, I’m a fan.
Hey man, I got my mom hooked on your videos lol. Keep up the great work!
haha hi momma ajkrules, good to have you on here too
Thank you! I really enjoy your take on our "local gods" here in Norway. I find the values of the northern gods much more relatable than the narcissistic abrahamic counterparts, who crave only blind worship. Your videos really makes the gods "come alive" in a very interesting way.
The red wedding...I saw that and immediately thought, oh noes. But then when you got to it, it literally made me laugh out loud.
Great episode my dude 👍
Real talk - I was brought here by my TikTok FYP - and I love it.
happy to see you made the move over here Christy 😊 glad to have you on board
Amazing as always
I am learning so much. And enjoying it all. I love the artwork. Please, where is it from?
