During this song, the crowd in the theatre was completely silent, at Passengers request. It remains one of the most emotional moments I've ever experienced during a concert. The story of this man stuck with Passenger, and now with me as well because of this beautifully sad song that gets to me every time. Truly amazing what music can make you feel!
PREACH!!!!!
:)
The same, he even turned his mic off when I saw him and sang it completely acoustically. One of the most mesmerising moments I’ve experienced
Because of this song, my bucket list is now to ride on Harley Davidson from Minnesota to New York.I am determined to tick it off the list one day.
@@leburuleburu8927 good luck mate
In this negative world , u are a little gentle light . The Great Passenger ,thank you
Well, I met him in Minnesota,
He was dark and overcast.
With long, grey hair and eyes that stared
Through me like I was glass.
I asked "Where are you going to?"
He said, "I'm the wind I'm just blowing through."
He lit up a cigarette and began to talk.
Said:
"The doctors told me that my body won't hold me,
My lungs are turning black.
Been a lucky strike's fool since I was at school and there ain't no turning back.
They can't tell me how long I've got,
Maybe months but maybe not,
So I'm taking this bike and riding to New York.
'Cause I wanna see my grand-daughter one last time,
Wanna hold her close and feel her tiny heartbeat next to mine.
Wanna see my son and the man he's become,
Tell him I'm sorry for the things I've done,
And I'd do it if I had to walk.
Oh, I'm taking this bike and riding to New York
Through the forests of Wisconsin that I knew as a boy,
Past the sky line of Chicago,
Round the lakes of Illinois.
I lay my head in a motel bed where my back is sore and my eyes turn red,
Listen to the trucks roll past my door.
Through the fields of Ohio as the sunshine paints them gold.
I run just like a river runs, rapid, quick and cold.
And fly through Pennsylvania and the Jersey turnpike tolls.
And I won't stop 'till I get to New York.
'Cause I wanna see my grand-son one last time.
Wanna see his eyes sparkling and stare back into mine.
Now my time is shorter,
I wanna see my daughter,
Tell her I'm sorry for the things I taught her
And I'd do it if I had to walk.
Oh, I'm taking this bike and riding to New York.
And I'd go up to the churchyard one last time,
Lay flowers down for the woman who gave me the best years of my life,
And I'd do it if I had to walk.
Yeah, I'd do it if I had to walk.
I'm taking this bike and riding to New York."
Said Sinno Thank you kindly
it feels a bit like the story of kafka of 'Kafka on the shore'.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This song and every song he sings had giving me the courage to search for the son I gave up for adoption in 1986. I am forever grateful. God bless you
I hope you find your dear Son. this is so touching
Hope you find him x
Did you find your son?
I hope so....
God bless you. I hope you find him
❤️
always brings me close to tears when he mentioned the chirchyard and his dead wife.. "Lay flowers down for the woman who gave me the best years of my life.."
unsung hero. With his words and songs.
this song tells such a touching story, and you only hear it if you listen carefully. Love it to pieces
i thought its pretty obvious, you dont really need to listen hard

For those who didn't know, this is actually a true story. It kept Mike from relapsing to smoking.
Yep! It’s an amazing Story! I wonder if he had quit since then.
frickin passenger and his sad songs.. making me tear up every time.
Still listening in 2022. This song is just touches your heart, the entire album is perfection.
I'm british and listened to this on the way to the Grand Canyon. This song is just beautiful and i just zoned out, listening, staring out into the desert. Never had a feeling like it ❤
Thank you Mike. You have made living life a little easier for all of us, simply by playing these songs.
Keep carrying on.
I hope that man was able to make it to New York and see his family. And I hope somehow he was able to hear this song.
Passenger's poetry is inexplicable!!! I love all his songs
Not even a million views was this song need more than a billion is so touching bravo bravo am spechless
Oh my, this one makes me cry every time I play it.
I have played this song on my guitar along with passenger for more than 50 times now....never get enough of it
my favourite song on the album. It brings tears to my eyes
I've read that this song is based on a real encounter Mike had. That was some years ago but I will always remember the feeling I had back then. And it wasn't like I haven't believed it. I actually believed the story since the first note he sang. And still it was overwhelming for me to know that Mike made such a fitting song about this conversation.
Riding to New York is one of the most touching songs he ever made. The story it tells is so beautiful and yet heartbreaking. Transforming these emotions into music is something not many musicians are able to do but Passenger is clearly one of them.
Yeah it is he talks about it on the live stream of the album
Lost at holding tears when he said
'see the man hes become, and say sorry for the things ive done'
The last time i heard this, was in Switzerland, live at the Summerstage. He told the story behind this song, while the entire crowd was quiet, you could hear, the heartbeats of the ones next to you.
I would like to hear more of those stories. Hopefully again in Switzerland.
only passenger can make beautiful songs like these
+Pocket 782 JASMINE LAMPORT STRONG...youtube it...and "WHY?" by Jasmine.
the last bit really pulls my heart string
"Lay flowers for the women ....who gave me the best years of my life"
This one is just perfect. No more words. Perfect. 👌
Its rare that I choke over a song!
This deserves of an award
He's an artist to the very soul...Love him
I mean seriously, Mike (passenger) deserves all the views in the darn world.
Mike, you are the definition of an artist, every word in this song is deep and carries a great sorrow from this story and you sing it in the best way I can possibly imagine.
Thank god for you and keep up, we fuc*ing love you.
This guy is just sublime, just love his lyrics and the way he 'feels' his music, what an incredible talent. Thanks Mike you're such a unique artist.
I love this song. Thank you, Passenger.
Omg this song makes me cry so much my dad smokes and he's the only one their for me my teacher played this in the lesson about smoking and I burst out crying this song is very emotional xd
Not crying, not crying, really not crying I've just got some grit in my eyes.....
I do then too haha
Even me..!!
He once commented to one of my posts on facebook , that was the highlight of my life . I just love how humble and down to earth he is .
Yes I agree with you, he is so beautiful in his soul and in his heart......he is down at the earth.......thats why I love his music and the him behind the guitar ❤❤
This song brings back the worst and best memories of my life. Thank you.
Me too
Thank You mr Passenger for giving me something i can relate to xx
This song shatters me completely.
Reminds me of the days I spent with my dad on the chemo ward. The only time we were ever close and really talked.
Check out STRONG by Jasmine Lamport Jon...i think you'll get it.
You were right, I get it more than you can know.
See you soon Dad
How are you now,sir ?
I can't help to cry every single time I hear this song. A masterpiece.
I cannot express how beautiful and soul touching this song is.
this is probably the most brilliant song ive heard so far
in such a simply way
Bro, try holes, caravan, survivors, home and this list goes on and on..
This hits hard. I live in a different country from my parents - on the other side of the world. My mom was dying of smoking related causes and she just wanted to see us one more time, including her new born granddaughter and we couldn’t go back because of the pandemic.
best time to listen to this is when you are traveling through the subways and buses of new york
Every single word touches me to my bone!
You nailed the imagery. Just incredible!
The Best song I've from the best artist!
Also It makes me cry.
Really love this man! It's such a relaxing song, that's probably why this is in my 'Going to Sleep' playlist haha :)
kun je deze ook coveren? Ik zou het kunnen waarderen! Een tutorial zou ook heel leuk zijn :)
You should make more passenger solos 😍☝
I'm just about to become a dad for first time and baby due since 3rd may and I'm 40 today so this song reminds of my father in law who I hope i can be like and lost him too early from brain tumour

You are a genious to tell an amazing story and fold it out in a song......this song touced me by heart.......love your stories and poetry......love from Denmark ❤❤
Mike this is a special song for me and one I will treasure throughout my life. Here´s why: in November 2013 I lost my 3 children to my government in a very public arrest. We have never been re-united but over all the years I battled my government through the courts I felt like I was that man riding the bike, trying to get to my children. I still haven´t reached them but I hold on, I hold on until that happy day. You heal people through your talent. Thank you.

It's a sin how underrated this song is.
Currently coming off of a bad copd flare up that floored me. Still can't quit. Like father like son I guess.
