Training Tips for a Belgian Malinois

    This is a shorter Transformation compared with some of the others we've done.
    Gunny came to us as a nice young Belgian Malinois who had lots of potential. But he was a touch twitchy. Always wanting to jump, nip, snap, things like that which are common to Malinois.
    In this video we focus on and talk a lot about off leash obedience. In fact, within the first few minutes you can see Joe pull out a masterpiece and start getting off leash control within a few minutes of starting the session.
    But the reason off leash obedience is so important is because off leash obedience requires a lot of self control on the part of the dog.
    When a dog learns self control, that combats twitchiness. They're two opposing forces that don't exist at the same time in the same place.
    If you're dealing with this same type of twitchiness, hectic mindset, unused drive, etc in your dog, you'll often find off leash obedience to be very helpful.

      Able to catch my breath or I just stop and tell him to wait lol .. and for protection , it’s like having a gun, super fast instincts, no fear , he will bite any threat without hesitation, nice loud bark. Oh and he knows how to sit,lay, rollover, give you both paws,speak( bark) , and stay for a short period, working on that last one but it’s tough lol

      @interestingstuff-ag1890 Před 7 lety +5

      the dog is being trained the focused heel, as opposed to loose leash walking. Malinois are a fairly healthy breed and not especially know for hip problems. What you are seeing is a dog that has very, very high pack drive and desire to work for his owner, and he leans into the leg as part of the heel exercise. This will be corrected later as the formal competition heel is further established. This dog is from a breed with a high desire to work and you're seeing a dog willing to work.

    My English is not very good.. so I'm sorry! But I am very sad.. the dog don't work because he wants to.. he works because he is afraid of the pain of the ecollar! He avoid eyecontact most of the time.. The position of his head and the ears.. it's not beautiful to watch.. at the moment I have only to Malinois.. both of them came to me with big problems.. they where pretty aggressive, the obedience was awful.. but I never needed a ecollar for training! We do Schutzdienst too.. and no.. i am not only working with treats, they get corrections too.. one of them even don't like treats really much.. this dog is only 6 months old? And you need a ecollar for training? Please tell me why.. if I work with my dogs, they look directly into my eyes, the tail is waggly and they work with full enthusiasm.. miss that in your trainingsession..
    But maybe you could tell me, why you don't even try it without this collar in Obedience Training :)
    Here in my country, if you would start in a competition you would loose much points because of the bodylanguage of the dog..
    Waiting for answer and wish you a nice day :)

    • @hbmike47
      @hbmike47 Před 7 lety +8

      I train without treats. Praise is all my dog needs.. Dogs that have strong drive tend to be too excitable and anxious. My focus is on maintaining the dog's focus and calm mind so even when praising, it is done in a calm manner. Corrections, by whatever means, are necessary to set boundaries that the dog clearly understands. You cannot correct a bad or dangerous behavior with treats and praise. E-collar if properly used is no different than any other correction. The dog must learn that doing that bad behavior has unwanted consequences. They learn then that the don't want to repeat that bad behavior because they don't want the consequence. I think you miss the point that in this video, there are only two times that corrections are used, when the dog jumps up. There is no indication in the video that the correction was painful. The dog did not shake it's head, yelp or otherwise react like it was in pain. They are not using the e-collar to get obedience, only to correct bad behavior. Obedience comes from the praise and pets that the dog is obviously responding to. They also say they are just starting with this dog, so are willing to not have perfect form for the heel, they simply have the goal of maintaining focus with distractions. This is working dog basic behavior not show/competition behavior, which requires much more refinement.

      Mike-Puppy Casey At least somebody gets it! People that don't understand these things about dogs and expect them to magically respond to just the word no will end up with a very rude, easily distracted, and out of control dog. A dog that is allowed to jump at people could easily cause bodily harm and that is unacceptable. It must be corrected. Some people are so overly sensitive about dogs that they think of them and treat them as though they are humans and have the same needs as us physically, emotionally, psychologically etc. They are dogs, and you can't reason with a dog so sometimes correction by stimulation is appropriate for some dogs in some situations. Thanks for your comment 🐶

    I would highly recommend you do your research before making comments about the trainers methods. When he says “e collar” he is referring to the name of the company that makes these collars. This is not a “shock collar”, it is a very carefully administered correction that is the safest and most humane of its kind. If you have never owned a dog with the intensity of a Malinois, you will never understand what this man is doing. The collar is used to send a blunt nudge to a part of the dogs neck that is instinctually known to them as a correction if used properly. If used correctly it is not a punishment for doing something wrong, rather a way to communicate to the dog what you are asking from them. Please go to E Collar Technologies website and educate yourself before yelling shock collar shock collar on every dog training video. This isn’t a golden retriever, this is a whole different level of animal which requires careful and experienced handling.

      I've had 5 Mals. I've used an e-collar (which is, actually, let's call a spade a spade, a shock collar) for off-lead work when there was no other way to communicate with the dog. Not sure why you would use one working on lead in a building. Maybe if there literally was no other way to communicate. But I doubt it. I mean, just give the dog a leash correction if you have to (assuming you have to). There are many other types of corrections you can give without using your hands as well.

      @@johnd3224 no it's most definitely a shock collar. I use one on my dog but don't be foolish as to what it is man. Take your dog's collar, put it on your neck and turn it to its highest level and tell me that is the same feeling you get at the chiropractor from the "TENS" unit. Come on man. When a dog is properly conditioned to the collar you can use very low levels to communicate with it but if a dog like a Mal is spun up in drive and doing bitework and it disobeys a known command that level 8 isn't going to cut it. They go to 100 or 127 depending on brand for a reason and sometimes the situation calls for a firm correction from the collar. Again.. I'm a fan of them and use them but don't pretend its only mild stimulation all the time.

For the first four to five years you don't need the dog. Family-wise they will tolerate family. They bite they nip you your family your neighbors. Other dogs it is there breed they were bred to herd. So before you get to looking at these videos and you have to have one. Think hard before you spend 3 to $5,000 on one. You might want to buy labradoodle instead... You don't just buy one and say one this is my pet.. Wrong he Owns you for his life time.. The dog prefers to be with you 24/7

      You have no idea what you are talking about. That dog is happy. A correction for jumping up (a potentially dangerous action) is no different when using a lead and collar than using an e-collar set to a low (training) stim level except that when working with the dog, the timing of the correction is more precise with the e-collar then you can achieve with a regular leash and collar at what would be an awkward angle. It does NOT hurt the dog. There is no indication from the dog that he felt any pain and it is no different than a quick tug on the leash. It's just a tool, like a collar and lead, to communicate to the dog a desired behavior or a limit/ unwanted behavior. When training, timing corrections is critical to the dog understanding what you are communicating. If you have a dog in a state of constant high anxiety, that state of mind is what is painful to the dog.

    • @hbmike47
      @hbmike47 Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Ian. I totally agree. It's really fun to work at a distance with my dog, either at the beach or in a large park. Having the E collar gives me the confidence that I can get her attention if she can't hear my command or is heavily distracted. At the beach, that can happen quick!! She's a great dog. I'm surprised by the negative comments. I don't think people understand that obedience comes from training, not from the E collar. It's just a tool like a prong collar or slip lead for that matter.
      No, higher levels weren't needed. As long as she can feel the collar, that's all that is necessary. It was really my consistency and timing using the collar. She's heeling great. I don't want her quite as close as you see this dog early in the video, she'd be getting stepped on during a long walk, but she's constantly checking in visually. Typically I have her on lead and e-collar when walking, as leash laws here require it. I've been using a bit of a long double handle lead (9') with a traffic handle that's just little too long for a dog at close heel. Typically, I just have the lead attached to the dog and thrown over my neck and don't even touch it with my hand. It's just there if I need it, otherwise it's slack. I should switch to a thinner lighter lead, but laziness prevails ;) What's remarkable in the video is to see how the dog has settled down. Starting out, he was very excitable, and later not so at all. My dog was the same way. This breed has such strong drive, and I think it causes the anxious/nervous clingy behavior. I train without treats, and with minimal touch, as either excites her too much, and I want to keep the switch Off for command obedience, which is mentioned early in the video.

    • @iansullivan5747
      @iansullivan5747 Před 7 lety +2

      That's great! Yeah the freedom your dog can have when properly e collar trained especially if you live in a city where theres not many areas to take a dog off leash that dont have major distractions. Your point about the training being more important then the tool i think is the real gem to take away, and it's something most ppl just dont get. Treat training can be a great way to start off a young puppy but even then its not necessary. In my experience praise and play training is better then treats any day. I have a new pup at the moment hes a 12 week old pointer pit mix, and with a simple game of retrieve done correctly you can create an awesome drive to please. I commend you for rescuing a Mal and envy the dedication u have to train such a high drive dog! I think that where people really get it wrong is the fact that the positive reinforcements are great for teaching a dog what you want but you need a different form of communication for when you want to teach the things not to do. E collar may be the best tool for this being so non invasive. Check out MasterPaws and rocky the malinois if you havent already...he is a great role model for all dog owners and trainers.

Shock collar you can adjust from 1-100 mostly all dogs are corrected between 6-8, which feels like a light poke with a needle. Prong collars are use till they walk nicely. I only use it on new environment on my dog. You can’t correct unwanted behavior with food. They have to do the unwanted behavior so we can correct it with the right tool so they totally get the message. After a few correction most dogs won’t do it again. It’s very simple.

      Would you rather someone get malled by this dog or would you rather it gets trained with any means necessary to ensure the safteu of the people around the dog that want to pet him.

      Constant e-collar will do that, don't get why they're using one at all.
