  • Let's see what the new She's all that reboot(with Addison Rae) brings to the table, and if the old movie seems better to us because of nostalgia! Comparing set design, colour correction and fashion of the two films.

    I don't know why so many Netflix movies are having these adults who don't know what teens wear style shows about high schoolers T_T. Even the kids who actually dress nice every day arent wearing heels and a fur vest. There are so many great options to find out what current high schoolers wear since there's stuff like TikTok and Instagram.

    A lot of the times the reason I don’t like the teen romcoms (even tho I’m 16) is because of the dialogue. It always sounds like what an older person thinks we sound like and 9 times out of 10 the writer is well into adulthood proving my point.

    I feel that films get fashion right or at least personal and creative when it comes from lower budget/independent films that don’t have big production companies influencing the styling. I can picture a bunch of out of touch interns in Netflix just looking at their Pinterest fashion boards from 5 years ago and figuring that kids like bright colours and fluorescent skinny jeans.
    When I think of timeless films that display the fashion of their generation or the period they were trying to represent I think of clueless, the craft, ginger snaps, Jennifer’s body, lost boys, mean girls etc.
    I think gen z is into the resurgence of 90s fashion and there’s so many alternative stylings kids like these days that it seems a shame it’s not being documented accurately in our culture and film.

    What I really really really hate about this movie visually is how in the prom scene addison is wearing red (vibrant) but everyone else is wearing like (blue-turqoise muted colors) color pallete (adapting technique from belle in beauty and the beast opening scene, maybe?). YES, we know that she needs to stand out but can you do it in less obvious way and more subtly? And we already know that she needs to stand out since she’s the main character. Also, how can the whole class agree to wear all the same color pallete while addison wore different one? Doesn’t make sense to me 😅

While She’s all that is flawed, it showed that if executed properly, a tacky and cliche script can still make a decent film. The acting is good, the storyline is consistent and the character growth and development is prevalent and makes the characters more endearing. He’s all that worked with a similar script but was executed so poorly that the flaws are way more noticeable than the original.

    She's All That had actual character development concerning the main character, Zach Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.). He was a shallow jerk in the beginning. He was also having issues with his dad because he doesn't know what he wants to do in the future, he just knows that he doesn't want to do what his father wants. Going to that performance with Laney (Rachel Leigh Cook) and then performing made him realize it was really fun and that he would want to do it again. The story made sense. In He's All That, Pagett (Addison Rae) is already a sweet person, she's just having money problems. She never had any character development because there was nothing to develop. The side characters (like Quinn) were really only the good part to me. I'm a theatre kid I've done script writing my whole Junior year was focused on playwriting and screenplays and how to write scripts and shows. The things this movie is missing is chemistry. There are no meaningful moments between the main characters, you don't care about them you don't wanna root for them, the bet reveal scene doesn't even seem important because there is ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION between the main characters. Besides a lack of chemistry the characters & plot are kinda boring, the characters never grow or change. They are exactly the same people at the end of the move as they were at the beginning. They don't develop or change attitudes at all. It makes them really boring and not interesting to watch. It also leaves you feeling unsatisfied with the movies ending.
    Say what you will about the original she's all that, and their use of these tropes, but at least the characters had chemistry and Freddie Prince Jr's character had changed by the end of the movie. the reason mature teen movies back in the day were successful is that they not only researched trends but also they were what set the trends. everyone wanted to cut their hair like Rachel and dress like Cher because that's where they got their media. today the youth makes their own media. fashion is alot more explorative because you're not just being fed one source, you're being fed about a million different sources and movies geared towards older teens can't keep up. In the 90s the kids that were more explorative with their fashion weren't necessarily the popular kids, it was the teens that that dressed by the latest trends created by traditional media and those old enough to have influence in traditional media. So if you consider it, this movie doesn't make sense because late teenagers of these days don't really embrace the same mentality of the teens in the 90s.
    The only teen demographic traditional media could possibly influence and appeal to these days is the tween and early teen demographic because they're more likely to follow what they see as cool and aren't given the kind of internet access older teens have. tweens look towards tictoc fashions and so on as the rebellious option in comparison to the frilly tame options of the shows they grew up watching, but companies like Disney and Nick don't really bother trying to 100% follow trends because they know that they will always have an audience with kids who aren't allowed to really dip their toes in social media.
    He's all that I think could only really appeal to diehard Addison fans. I don't really see this as a bad movie, honestly, I think it's even a bad idea to compare it to the og because these are different times. I don't think this movie could have ever been successful because Addison's audience is a tween to early teen audience who probably wouldn't have been allowed to consume the more edgy 90s counterpart, they had to make this movie for kids because that was their only chance of an audience but they shot themselves in the foot because now we have people over here going over it with a fine-toothed comb frothing at the mouth because "the original is better!" like it's some competition between generations. if this movie was a stand-alone piece, no call backs to She's all that, then for the most part the only people who would've cared about this movie is it's target audience of Addi Rae stans and tweens.

    • @LisaFevral
      @LisaFevral  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah, I think you’re right! Tbh they should’ve just tried to make it look good to the eye(not just fashion, but camera work and art decor) if they wanted it to not get picked apart, since the fact that Addison is in it is gonna bring interest of people and therefore many are going to create content for the demand

  • @elianne4753
    @elianne4753 Před 2 lety +6

    Great analysis! Movies like this one seem like they’re following a specific, dated formula - sort of this 2010 mold for character writing, costume guide, and dialogue. As time goes on and up to the present, they haven’t done anything significantly different. What we see as a result are *forced* pop cultural references, awkward or misused “deep” statements, husks of trope characters that get recycled over and over again, and the same unrealistic writing and character motivations, just with slightly modern changes. It just ends up being dated and cringey and totally unaware of the current audience it’s trying to reach - sort of a cheap cash-grab with lots of depthless “pretty” if that makes sense. All of this becomes especially evident in teen movies nowadays. The inaccuracy in the costumes, dialogue, and motivations make the movie/show feel like a remote GAP catalogue dream instead of a relatable narrative. I don’t know if it’s an instance of trying too hard or not trying hard at all on the part of the production team, but I think what sets up 2010s-now teen movies/shows from previous decades’ teen movies is that it’s lost this authenticity, this voice that speaks for a generation.

    • @LisaFevral
      @LisaFevral  Před 2 lety +3

      yeah I definitely agree with you! I also think that it's laziness on the production's side. I've seen it a lot in producers of films that are for the tween-teen audiences, they are not particularly good at their jobs, but they have "paid their dues" at some point in the past when that counted for something, and now they keep making 2-4 of these poorly made teen movies a year, every year of their careers. Idk why they're even wasting money making these tbh

    The original may have not been that great of a movie, but it didn’t lack substance like the remake. In the original, you see character backgrounds and development from each of the main characters. The pauses, the drama, and development in the original gave a different vibe from the remake as this one felt hella rushed IMO. An example in the original is when he was doing the hackey sack scene, it gave a glimpse of where he was in his thoughts (pressure from his dad, lost, etc). As well as Laney with her artwork and how her teacher was trying to get an artwork that expresses her true self. Little things like that was what made the original special to me. Not trying to knock on the actors and actresses from the new one because it was okay, but wish they had more substance in it.

    She's all that is a cult classic and falls into the same category many late 90's to early and mid 2000's movies fall into of being so bad it's good, it's a fun Friday night watch if you're looking for a harmless nostalgia trip with slightly offensive comedy and a good soundtrack, it hard a charm to it, as most of those movies did, that I think today's movies lack, especially ones on Netflix. The movies themselves are slightly problematic at times, and wouldn't be as well received today, but I still enjoy them, even if they are kind of awful. I didn't have high hopes for this movie at all, it was okay, not particularly groundbreaking, and definitely not worth a second watch, it was just a similar rehashing of the previous movie with slight variations in the storylines melded together with poor acting, awkward dialogue, half baked jokes and some scenes that went on for longer than I liked. It's rating is understandable. The only redeemable quality of the movie was the relationship between the protagonists friends, natural and not made to feel out of place, she's not brave for liking a girl, they just happen to be two girls in a relationship, it was refreshing to see.

    i actually came into the movie wanting to like it because i liked she's all that and i LOVE chick flicks, so i'm not trashing it just to trash it. but lord he's all that was just SO bad. i cringed so hard that i couldn't even finish the movie, i don't understand how people think that it was semi-ok.

      yeah I get what you're saying but I guess that after kissing booth the expectation was that this movie would be just as bad, so to compare to it it wasn't the worst, which doesn't say much

      @@LisaFevral i actually didn’t find the kissing booth AS horrible as he’s all that 😭 but to be fair i watched it a while ago and never finished it so it might’ve been horrible but i just forgot. i think to all the boys i’ve done before is the only semi-ok netflix original rom com

    The Mum is not too young. The actress is 41, Pagett is 16 or 17 I guess, that's perfectly possible. would still be perfectly possible if the actress was at the end of her 30s

      I know it’s technically possible, just weird to me personally

      @@LisaFevral I mean, I get that she looks super young, but she'd have had Pagett at 24 or 25 which doesn't really seem that young to me

    I think her outfits just look very christian in my opinion. Like that's what you wear to church and what Christian CZcamsrs are probably wearing right now and will wear in the future. Christiancore. Addison's character has a live laugh love in her house for sure.

      yeah, there's a sign of similar nature in the room that's supposed to belong to the main character
