- The city of Belfast adores George Best. So much so, the airport is named after him. The former Manchester United legend was born in the capital of Northern Ireland and grew up watching his local team, Glentoran.
I visited some of the most important George Best sites in Belfast.
#football #belfast #manchesterunited - Sport
Are there any other cities around the world that are THIS obsessed by one footballer?
Rangers they always use the term obsessed nah maybe cove rangers
I can't say just one city but the whole of 🇰🇷 is absolutely obsessed with Son Heung-min.
Came to mind too @@LHBH8
@@euanblack9737 You mean South Korea.
@@euanblack9737definitely not North Korea
My dad is from Belfast and so we go over there every year to see family. Went to George Best’s house and Windsor Park but so many stuff is about Best! Bit before my time but it just shows you the legacy he had
Yes, George was not just the best player in the World, but, by far the best. Just incomparable,.
I have watched George live playing for N Ireland, Man Utd and Hibs and i still have my George Best fiver What a player what a man
lucky you were able to watch him, i would of but he died too young. RIP
Great player when playing for man utd watched by both sides of the community 🇮🇪🇬🇧
You are so right. As a child, I remember a documentary telling the story of Manchester United supporters from NI from both sides of the divide who would normally never meet, getting together as part of a Supporters club and sitting together on a coach going to watch United.
It made a big impact on me because coming from Glasgow I understood the significance of that especially when here on the mainland we had the Celtic/Rangers thing and in Liverpool where they refused to sign any Irish Catholic for 96 years!! United always felt different, like an inclusive family where although humour was a central part of it, you felt safe among adults, who would always keep an eye out for you whether you were family or not. It didn't matter what Nationality or religion you were!
My family is very much mixed Ibam from
Scotland but have plenty of Irish blood, though my
Grandparents.
My Grampas family's where both from Belfast originally my Mum's Mum was born in Castlederg
Country Tyrone.
My nephew & brother in law are Celtic fans . I have cusens that are Celtic fans as well.
My Dad is a Rangers fan
one of his brother is
a Saint Mirren fan.
My passion is for
Chelsea football wise in terms of club football.
Glentoran is my
Nothern Irish club.
And follow both
Scotland & Nothern Ireland it's in the blood.
I also follow Rugby
& watch as much of
Scotland & Ireland as possible.
Keep safe, hands across the water regardless of politics.
George Best what an incredible talent a fantastic footballer in the Manchester United team George the best player from Northern Ireland Bobby Charlton best from england and Dennis Law the best player and still joint top goalscorer for Scotland with 30 goals
I'm from the Cregagh when George died it was like losing a family member, especially as a United fan not many other players can have that effect on a community Maradona is the only one that comes to mind.
I dated a woman who
stayed in Ravinhill Avenue years ago.
So I know the area of Belfast fairly well.
Am old enough Sam to have seen him play for NI on a number of occasions. Absolute genius but such a sad ending to the story. Thanks for this one.
George Best was a true Genius of a footballer⚽👍
GOOD MEMORIES of George Best , thanks for the video and cheers from Tasmania
Thanks mate 🙌🏼
Nettlefield Primary School also had Northern Ireland internationals Sammy Morgan and Billy McKeag as pupils. The only pupil from the school to play in the World Cup Finals was Terry Moore who played for Canada in the 1986 finals in Mexico. Terry was born in Canada but his parents brought the family bacl to Northern Ireland.
The blooming 11+ gave me memories😭
Good evening. Thank you very much for this lovely piece on George .
It fascinates me that almost 19 years following his passing that he’s still so fondly remembered,🙂
Saw George Best and had to watch!
Legend thank you
Saw him play for Hibs in Edinburgh but he despite being past his best was still great 👍
Was in Belfast the week before you. I did a city tour and the driver said (in a broad Norn Iron accent) 'Belfast has two claims to fame - one was a disaster, the other sank'.
Wow thanks, I am a Manchester United fan because my mother took me to visit family in Belfast, and my uncle took me to see NI vs Cyprus. George Best scored a hat trick, he became my 1st idol. I live in Canada now but lived back home twice 98/99, and in 2005/06. I remember the funeral. Legend ❤
PS you can stay at his family home through air b and b
Superb video. Your glass is always half full. Thank you.
Good to see more of Belfast. Good people. Good times ahead I think.
I miss my home city, thanks for the video Sam. Great work
Seen u on the pitch last Sunday Sam.. brilliant to see you support our local game mate and keep the great content coming 👍
Was lucky to see him play, what a genius
Great content Sam, some interesting comments too🤩
What a talent you were George . R I P
Fantastic player 👏
He was the 1st rock star type footballer ...so it was understandable he gave in to temptation...
I once met a guy who met George’s dad. After showing off family photos, he told my friend that all they could afford for a football was a buying a pig bladder from the butcher for cheap, blew it up like a balloon, and tied it with a string.
He took that makeshift football everywhere he went, and his dad remembered tucking him in at night and as George was drifting off to sleep, he held the football in his arms and saying to it, “One day, you’ll do everything I tell you to do.” Boy howdy did that prove true.
I remember years ago reading about George Best. He played his first game for Man Utd at the age of 16. Extraordinary
There are a few grounds that I want to see a football match played in, some large and some much smaller...in Northern Ireland it is the Oval!
An old school ground steeped in history but these days looking very much the worse for wear. Needs redevelopment funding badly like a lot of Northern Ireland stadia.
Great video 👏🙌
Love the video mate I'll bump into you 1 of these days when your in homeland of east belfast hope you enjoyed your time here
We had a whole civil war since the days of George Best. Obsessed is a huge overstatement.
Absolutely fantastic. The only balon dor winner from northern ireland, pat jennings a close second and still the closest a keeper has come to winning it since yashin
Grew up in Northern Ireland and living in Belfast atm. George Best was one of the first footballers I heard about as a kid, along with the more modern Rooney, Ronaldo etc
Fantastic video Sam
Sam, great video and a surprise. I work for the charity that looks after George Best House (and keeps it active as an AirB&B and runs tours of it), if you're ever back to Belfast for a video reach out and happy to sort out a visit. Maybe we can get you out to Wilgar Park to see the Duns, who look set to win the championship and miss out on promotion!
Weird seeing my area on here 😂 I also went to Lisnasharragh High School! To answer your question about the gates on the alleyways, they were initially put up to reduce the places people could run to and hide during riots at flash point areas. Then other residents liked the idea to keep the rear of the houses secure from burglaries etc.
George best was the best of his generation.♥️
3:20 Uncle got shot dead here infront of my aunt when she was a baby, was killed by the IRA. People always go out of their way to forget the IRA killed almost more of their own people than all of the loyalist groups combined, my uncle was catholic but that's not why he was executed. He was executed because the IRA were EXTREMELY racist. Went to the same school as George Best, great vid
George Best San Jose Earthquake legend!
Yep and Hibs, Fulham and so many more people often forget about!
@JustMeHere359 Yes that was an Epic goal?
Brilliant player
Really really interesting video
I LIVE HERE!
HAHA WHAT A COINCIDENCE I SEE MY FAV CZcams ON MY SECOND FAVOURITE CZcamsRS CHANNEL!!! live in belfast too!
Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Donegal 💚🇮🇪☘️
Both Manchester United legends 😉
Is the guy who is your guide the guy who did the last video on glentoran in the oval about the blitz etc?
Everyone should visit Belfast.
That would be interesting. Which half decent footballers have come from grammar schools? Wouldn't mind so much but when's the last time we supported hockey as a country, or Rugby Union brought people together like football does. Which sport earns the players the best lifestyle?
Sleep tight George
High School of Glasgow claims not to be a grammar, yet Rugby and Hockey are the focus. Well well well. All it's given us in the past 50 years is Susan Calman and Muriel (I'm The Firestarter) Gray. Where's the money really going?
Warra vid mate i did a interview at the league cup final you are a very nice fellow thanks mate
So you’ve done Belfast , time to come to Madeira the other airport you referred to. Ronaldo’s museum is amazing , I know where he grew up and I can take you to see Maritimo in the Portuguese second division
I’ve got one of them GB fivers I can send if interested bud, great video as always 👌
welcome to belfast live there
George Best - The Bon Scott of World Football. "It's a long way to the top, if you wanna kick a goal"
Like George, booze was Bon Scott's downfall and wasted the talent he was given. George got a good few more years on this earth than Bon mind.
I have one of those George best fivers
Saw him play for Hibernian 😊😊
Obsessed is a bit of a strong word
@FootyAdventures the the big two derby is soon might we see you at the oval
Napoli comes close and of course Buenos Aires for the lil argentinian
❤
Cheers as ever Steve. Really appreciate you watching all the videos you do!
@@FootyAdventures welcome mate keep up the great work 👍
No way you went to my hometown
I have 5 of the notes all in serial order, would never sell them
His elevator didn't open in blythe Street lol
Missing all the drama at Glentoran, their ex Linfield boss Feeney getting the boot on the quiet. Then all socials have been quiet for days. Club stadium is failing apart, owner has no money and the board made up of ex managers haven't got a Scooby doo.
Here was me thinking that lot were obsessed with Scott Brown.
That lot?
Rodney was a friend of young George in east Belfast 😂
I am blue who is almost 63 now. Started going to City in the 66-67 season with my Dad. I saw Best play and he was special but - and I don't want to come across as bitter - I always felt he wasted his talent. At the point in his career where he could have gone on to greatness he became a playboy and messed about in the States and at places like Fulham. He should have been the 70's Messi and Ronaldo but better.
Anyway will leave you with this
czcams.com/video/XemxPtm70wM/video.htmlsi=53n-gbGRzMDge7Zt
I agree. He retired at a ridiculously early age for a footballer. Best started to go off the rails not long after Matt Busby retired. Perhaps better man management would have prevented him from wasting his talent. Brian Clough often reminded his players how fortunate and privileged they were to be playing football for a living.
Y didn't he bring you to Cliftonville ground
The Oval needs alot of investment.
Belfast is the best place in the world

Obsessed *with* a footballer.
No mate we’re not all obsessed with Best to be honest!

As much as we all loved Bestie,i think he would have been a bit embarrassed to have his name tied in with an airport!
I mean, for tourists, who never heard of him,it might cause a lot of confusion and i cant see Glasgow airport changing its name to " Kenny Dalglish" airport after that legend goes also!
Stick to the Citys name only is my point!
In years to come, the name will lose any significance to most people.
It's like the Brandywell stadium in Londonderry, home of Derry City FC, being renamed the Ryan McBride stadium a few years ago. Already started to be forgotten about
Oh where did it all go wrong George
Its George Best's fault, unfortunately that there are so many Man U fans in Ireland & Ulster. Shame he didnt play for Fulham in his prime, might hav had more fans! 😂
Until George Best played for Man U, they were seen as a Catholic club in the North and wouldn't have attracted that much support from the Unionist community. It changed after that.
Maradona good, Pele better, George Best!
Belfast city airport is not an international
Probably away looking for Rangers fans
Maradona was good, Pele was better BUT GEORGE WAS THE BEST.
Come on the man’s feet stole someone else’s liver and he went on to abuse that , give the whole story not just the ups rename the Airport too
He was a drunk and wasted his life and the gift of life he got from the death of another person with his transplant
yawn. what are these gates for? jesus.
Loyal East Belfast 🇬🇧
Hopefully your time in Northern Ireland 🇬🇧🇮🇱
Muppets 😂
Careful Charles that Irish bloke is dangerous
obsessed 'with' not 'by'...very basic grammar!
Sorry but that gay hadden a clue about about George Best
Georgie was an embarrasing drunk ,you are in Antrim & the biggest sport in Antrim by a country mile is Hurling ,its a religion to Antrim people & thhen gaelic football ,soccer in Antrim is a joke ,Just go see the amount of supporters that go to Hurling Matches & the embarrasing numbers who follow soccer in both Belfast & Antrim ,
It's a football channel, take a day off ffs
You obviously don't know that alcoholism is a disease, those poor folk who are afflicted with it do not have a choice.
seems to be good numbers at corrigan park alright
Utter bollocks.
East Belfast where George was born and raised and where most of the video was shot is on the County Down not Antrim side of Belfast.
My dad's family were from the cregagh before they were put out for being Catholics but he tells stories of his older brothers playing football with George in the big field in the middle of the estate.
Gates for anti social behaviour
Isreal flags those loyalists are clueless haha.
Didn't see them?
