  • Anyone that's taken a cruise knows that the story in cruising is more, more, more. More people, bigger ships, more to eat, see, and do.
But cruising is constantly evolving and part of that evolution is something -- both good and bad -- disappearing. From small things to major changes, here's what you might say goodbye to in the future.
What do you think could disappear? Let me know in the comments below. Is it something I mentioned? Or something else? Also, be sure to like and subscribe to the channel, and see more about getting ready for your trip at Cruzley.com!

@@PsychGirlRaven I'll just take my money elsewhere.
Last year we sailed from Seattle to Sydney and they wanted me to use my phone to book in for breakfast and lunch in the main dining room. The problem was that I’d left my phone at home in Australia. They eventually got the message and I had to laugh when their system crashed half way through the cruise and they had to print paper daily programs for everyone, not just us Luddites.
We're about to take our 4th cruise for this year and none of them have been back on Carnival. Admittedly there were many more issues apart from them wanting me to carry a phone with me.
      Happy sailing. 😀

As the owner of one of the oldest travel agencies in Texas, I had an interesting conversation with a senior Royal Caribbean employee that flatly stated that RCCL's ultimate goal is to have only two things available for no additional cost on your cruise: your room & a restricted buffet. No dining room or even shows without a fee. (this has subtlety started with their new dining room rules & fees) Very literally, almost EVERYTHING on board will have a fee. In the trade, RCCL is called the "nickle & dime" cruise line for a reason. As long as people keep accepting restrictions & paying for what used to be included, this will accelerate their intentions.

It’s not just RC it’s the other lines too & NCL is more often called the nickel & dime of the sea they make others look like all inclusive resorts.
All the lines have changed many things but I highly doubt they will only provide a limited buffet & charge for all entertainment or all food offers. The lines aren’t idiots they will push as far as they can but they realize people often cruise for the convenience & the cost is still less than a land vacation with multiple restaurants & entertainment.

Year later I went on it again and the escape room was gone, the high wire training was gone, the people coming out of the ceiling during the Spectra's Cabaret show GONE. Add on the poor customer service, we arrived and our restaurant reservations were gone in the computer, even though we had a printed copy, they put us from a private table to a huge table with strangers. Personally I think the cruise-lines are shooting themselves in the foot. With the tremendous increases in fares along with the reduction of services and all the nickle and diming, many of the lines are doing, is going to come back and bite them in the butt. In fact this is how bad it is getting. I took a 5 day cruise the beginning of July and never met or saw my room steward. We had breakfast room service on a port day. Disembarked, roamed around the port for about 5 hours, came back onboard to our room and the room had not been cleaned up along with the breakfast dishes still on the table on the balcony. I normally pre-pay all my gratuities along with giving the room steward anywhere between $75-125. This cruise I didn't leave the "extra" tip and I had customer service remove one day off the room gratuities. This was the first time, after 21 cruises, that I did that. I have one more cruise booked the end of 2024 and that will be it. No more. The size of the occupancy keeps getting larger and larger and the venues are getting smaller and smaller. If you don't make dinner/show reservations way in advance, you stand a good chance of getting locked out UNLESS you pay the EXTRA premium for Concierge Service or Butler/Genie service. In my opinion, COVID killed the cruise industry, and with some of the cruise lines now showing big profits and with an increase in bookings, they are realizing they can take advantage of their customers while they can. HOWEVER people are going to get tired of paying all these extra charges along with lower customer service and reduction in venues, shows etc. and eventually find alternatives to cruising.

    1. Room service was never always free. Very few cruises I've been on have had free room service.
    2. Specialty dining has been a thing for many years, even before covid. We have done it occasionally, when the cover charge was about $15. There's no way you get $45 pp of extra value in those places now, and that's not even factoring in the fact that you've already paid once for food.
    3. I doubt many people cruise to visit theme park islands where they are forced to pay exorbitant prices. if that becomes a thing, we won't be cruising any longer, or will choose to stay on board on those days.
    4. The cruise package add ons Princess offers are far too inclusive, so people end up paying for stuff they don't want or use. They don't factor in that some people don't want or need all or indeed any of the stuff in the packages. Not everyone drinks and eats to excess. If they sold more tailored packages, it might be more attractive to people. As it is, we don't buy them because it's not worth it for the one or two things we might like now and then and those certainly aren't going to cost $130 a day.
    5. On board wifi is a joke. It is too painfully slow to actually do anything and on larger ships, you have literally thousands of people all trying to use the one point of contact. We've never had any issues with wifi in port. Infact many have tents for this set up dockside. Even in a remote port in Greenland we were able to access wifi on shore. I guess if you are that welded to social media, it may come as a shock to have to do without on sea days, but frankly, I'd rather spend my time enjoying what I've paid to do than spend my holiday with my eyes glued to a phone screen.

I turned my phone on airplane mode and only used the ship app. It was kinda great. I don't think I'd get the wifi package unless it was free or included with my stateroom. My first cruise in 1993 was on a ship with less than the smallest Royal has now. Only 1 theater, dining room and buffet, a few bars, 1 pool, ping pong and shuffleboard. Room service was free and we could get sodas, OJ and iced tea there or in the dining areas. Since then the ships now have 3 performance areas, multiple pools, water slides, rock climbing, ice skating, multiple snack areas, etc. With a greater time line, one could see so much is included now that we shouldn't complain. With that being said, I'd like to pay to get on and be able to do whatever is available. If there aren't enough time slots, the cruise line should do a better job matching options with passenger counts, so not everything becomes a line to wait in.

Pretty much all what you said is true. You only forget 2 things that are disappearing:
    1) Gala nights: Yeah; most mainstream and premium lines still have them, but the ambiance is not the same, nor the menus ever differentiated from other nights. With huge luggage flight limitations, most cruisers are now facing hard choices and they're deciding with their feet on letting the formal clothes at home. Society is also running more informal.
    2) Professional photographers: Gone are the days when a pro photo with the Captain or either way a pro photo with your group was actually nearly "mandatory". Not anymore. on most lines the Captain's reception has been changed during Covid and by the most part every cruiser do have their own smartphone capable of very decent photos - Oh, well... Sometimes even better photos than the supposedly pro ones by yourself!...

I liked room service, turn down service, dressing for dinner (not formal but putting pants and a collar shirt on) group tables, and yes formal night.. when people started to complain about the "nice things" and everything went informal.. the cruise lines learned that they could change the way they did business because their target audience changed. So they slowly tested the waters on making it casual and ala cart. For some this is fine.. but for us older folks.. Cruising is a luxury vacation and we want to be treated like it is.

Then they waddle slowly down the hallways blocking everyone else while they puff, wheeze, fart and groan to their cabins. They need bloody cranes to take 10 minutes load them on and off tour buses and they squash the deck furniture with their enormous weight usually hoisting their disgusting unwashed feet all over the upholstery. Blech.
Inclusions in the fare and drinks packages were fine when passengers were mostly sensible, polite, restrained people. The loathesome greedy louts now taking over will wreck a whole lot more than they already have.

Indoctrination is not education. Its always been a scam. "Climate Change" formerly "Global Warming" formerlly "Global Cooling" has never had anything to do with science. Those air turbines are a billion dollar fraud and an disaster for birds and insect. They cut down forrests to creat massive solar panel farms. Trees in case you failed science absorb CO2 and produce oxygen. Its impossible to get away from using oil. Everything is made of plastic, derived from oil. Unless you are wearing 100% cotton or wool your clothes made with oil. That elastic on your cotton underwearl, oil derived.

I am with you on your choices. If you are too lazy to walk down to the cafe to get food, I dont feel one bit sorry for you. It's 300 feet with an elevator. Lets not be too stupid.

That's rather a naive statement. They add it to the cost of your fare, so whether you use it or not, you're still paying for it one way or another.
