  • I received my CDL (Commercial Driver's License) in Ohio approximately three years ago. I wished I would have done it sooner. I received a Class A with every endorsement I could get except for Hazardous Materials since it required extra steps and I had no intention of hauling that type of material at this time. I obtained my CDL for my personal reasons for my side business with land clearing and farming. Immediately after passing my test and getting my CDL, I bought a single axle dump truck to haul equipment and to support my farm/side business. It was a good decision with no regrets. But I feel that there is so much about the industry I don't know and really want to learn at some point.
While attending truck driving school and from what I have learned, driving truck is an undiscovered world to me. There are so many jobs involving truck driving, that someone could easily get decent employment in a short amount of time after completing classes and passing the testing. There is so much to learn and explore that I feel its a good opportunity to those that qualify or are looking at potential job opportunities. You can find a job for long hauls to local hauling. You just need to get some experience and get started. Having a Class A license means you can pretty much drive anything. This certification will always keep you marketable as long as you have a clean driving record and stay away from controlled substances.

I know there are probably a lot of guys using the farm exemption in many states. The benefit of having the CDL Class A is just to keep many doors open even though I use mine for personal use. You can't have enough certifications under your belt. You just never know what opportunities come your way. Lots of guys farming have CDL backgrounds. Like I said, I wish I would of had mine sooner. I am not surprised with your background from some of the things you have mentioned already. Vast experience is a good thing.
