    When I got the 33 1.4 it blew my mind with its image quality. I got even more impressed with the 18 1.4, because it gives images special, unique rendering (sharper in small details and generally dreamy look) and the lens can focus a lot closer than the 33 1.4. However, I know you're not a fan of 18 1.4.

    I've owned the 33mm F1.4 for quite some time, but recently decided to pick up the 23mm F2 as well. I was lacking something a little bit wider, AND was missing something TINY and light, for when I'm gonna be walking around a lot on whatever holiday destination. I've had limited testing with the 23mm F2, but so far, really enjoying it. 23mm is definitely a vibe and I think I'm fine with just having the F2 and not the F1.4

      Same here. The new 23 just lacks a certain wow factor in the rendering that the old lens had. The sharpness and close focussing is certainly it's own wow factor, but that's more of a party trick that for a 23 that is a very versatile focal length and I just don't feel it's as well rounded. It feels like it's designed for another purpose. The viltrox 27 feels closer to the original 23. The close focussing is a lot of fun though and I prefer it to the 30 2.8 for this. But I pretty much build any kit around the 18+33 now.

    The 23mm lens has been my go to lens since 2018. I started with the f2 and transitioned to the 1.4 WR and 80% of the time it's on my XH1, now on my XH2s. I love the 35mm look (focal length) because it is more versatile, even with portraits. I just got a 33mm 1.4 recently but I rarely use it. It does not give a certain "bang" to my photos. Might sell off the 33mm.

  • @SquirrelHybrid
    @SquirrelHybrid Před 6 měsíci +1

    With the 18mm on 40mp sensor if you shoot at f/1.4 and crop it to a 6000x4000 (24mp) image, you pretty much get a 23mm f/1.8 equivalent. Image quality will be a little downgraded compared to using the new 23mm, including at high ISO comparisons.
    I think 23 & 33 is a bit close together, but every lens has its purpose. 😇 I currently prefer seeing the 23 & 56 used for portraits and 18 & 33 for scenery, and I'm split when it comes to 16 and wider (I love funky wide-angle portraits). 🙈I love seeing the 18 used for establishing scenes in a neutral way (nothing shouting for your attention, save that for wider lenses), the 23 for portraits/scenes with symmetry, the 33 for capturing abstract details that tells a larger story, and the 56 for capturing candid moments between 2+ people. ☺
    Edit: Fixed the aperture equivalence.

    • @pithaupert
      @pithaupert Před 6 měsíci

      Actually, I think cropping the 18mm f/1.4 to a 23mm will result in something equivalent to an f/1.8 and not f/2.2. The respective ISO would be 8000. You would have 31MP left. I did the math because I use my 18mm f/1.4 to crop it to 23mm and works very well!

    • @SquirrelHybrid
      @SquirrelHybrid Před 6 měsíci

      @@pithaupert I shot both lenses on a tripod from the same spot, and I can confirm that I needed to crop the 18 to 23.9mp to match the 23. 🥲 Maybe we're using different methods.

      @Iamtongue  Před 6 měsíci +1

    • @pithaupert
      @pithaupert Před 6 měsíci

      Your crop factor from 18mm to 23mm is determined by dividing 23mm by 18mm = 1,27778. Since you crop into the sensor you divide the amount of pixels 40MP by the Crop Factor 1,27778 = 31,3 MP. That's the amount of resolution you have left. If you have less then you simply crop to more than 23mm leading to less resolution being available. But in the end the whole math is not important as long as you frame and crop your shot in a compositionally appealing way! 😆@@SquirrelHybrid

    • @SquirrelHybrid
      @SquirrelHybrid Před 6 měsíci

      @@pithaupert I think you need to do 23² ÷ 18² = 1.63 because you're calculating for a square instead of a line. 🙂
      40mp ÷ 1.63 = 24.5mp
      -f/1.4 x 1.63 = f/2.28- (edit: this is wrong)

    Without discussing specific lenses does a photographer need a 23mm (35mm) and a 33mm (50mm) in his collection...
    I guess that is down to the photographer, can he make do with one or the other, Probably
    The Distortion from the 23mm is so hard to notice when a photo is looked at on its own but it is present, maybe not enough that it matters, and the slight distortion can be used creatively.
    For years I shot almost exclusively with the old XF 35mm F/1.4, portraits, landscapes, city everything why, it was the only lens I had.
    Now I shoot with a 23mm and 56mm, the 35mm is still there and still get used, just not part of my everyday carry kit.
    I don't think the focal lengths are too close to be one or the other they can't do the same job to the same standard, both have limitations.
    If the issue is budget.... there are probably other options that are better suited.
    E.g. pick up one fast prime from a 3rd party, then pick up a 3rd party F/2.8 zoom. If you are on a budget, the price of the XF 23mm F/1.4 will probably get you the Sigma 23mm F/1.4 DC DN and the 18-50 F/2.8 DC DN zoom, is the Sigma 23mm as good as the Fuji... I honestly don't know, I've never shot them side by side but it is a very nice lens in my opinion that I happily use for professional work

    • @brownbear100
      @brownbear100 Před 6 měsíci +1

      I prefer to think in kits, not lenses, so while I have certainly have some overlap especially around the 14-55 range, it doesn't feel that way to me as these lenses can be the backbone of a number of kits. It also helps be to avoid lens paralysis to have go-to kits.
      So for a lightweight fun kit, I might build a kit around the 16+30.
      Travel and documentary: 18+33 or 14+23+56
      Casual nature and wildlife: 23 + 70-300
      Etc.
      I'mf love to trim down the lenses, but I fimd it really difficult to let any of the new 1.4 lenses go. I do debate swapping back to the 35 and old 23 for the character, but actually the viltrox 27 offers that character and sits between the two. The small lenses will probably go for the x100vi though, and I certainly can imagine having two 23s!
