In this video we talk about what it's like living as a family of 6 in New York City and raising kids here. After living in NYC for 20 years, we bring our experience of having lived under many different circumstances and in many different parts of the city!
We talk about the challenges families face and how to deal with them. And offer some survival tips! We also chat about the benefits and some of the fun things to do with kids and how to give them an enriched experience without breaking the bank. We'll offer some advice on how and where to take your kids and not have to spend much money.

Yes I agree, I was born and raised in NYC and so were my children until they were about 10. Do to my husbands job we moved to Pennsylvania. That was an adjustment for me…both boys live in a city, not a fan of small town America. I went to a Catholic school then public high school, my friends were in Harlem and Central Park was the place to be.
I and my 3 children moved out of NYC in 2002 after a divorce. After 9/11, I began to see a dramatic increase in prices on everything. I decided to transfer to the DC office of my job and live in Maryland. Commuting was not a big deal at all. I left behind a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bath garden apartment in Queens. I hated to leave but I knew I would be in a struggle in a few years and decided to leave when the time was best. I loved living in New York and still visit now and then because no place is like New York. My girls learned a lot about diversity, the culture is amazing,. Macy's at Christmas was a must and they really believed the real Santa came to Macy's. They learned how to get around and be independent and to think on their feet. I had a car but due to traffic and parking issues we often took the subway or buses. Having a car was vital while living in Queens. Sometimes I wish I had not left, but the cost of living would have been killer. As much as I miss it, one of the biggest problems was laundry. I do not miss that trek.

Wow! I left Brooklyn 35 years ago to live in Florida. I miss it so much!!! Now seems like many New Yorkers are here.

Love this video. Really good pointers. If I had to do it all over. I would still raise my children here in NYC. The biggest perk for me is the cultural diversity. My children grew up amongst the United Nations. I would have it no other way. 🙏🏿

Just found your channel. I lived in NYC until my daughter was 3yo. I always had people help me with the stroller. Laundry was rough. I gave in and brought it to the laundromat and had them do it- mainly because we would haul 4 or 5 huge bags and the ladies folded it so well it came back in 2 bags. We live in Western MA. now. Your videos bring back fond memories. Thanks

My husband is from NYC and i am from Madrid (Spain) we are raising 3 kids in Spain and we are happy with healthcare, parks , transportation and schools in Spain. My husband never wanted to raise kids in NY due to the high cost of living. I cannot imagine paying that much price for an apartment. However i am sure that raising kids in NY it would also have been a great experience.
I am Spanish too and Kensington in London is getting very expensive too.
Can I ask you, in which part of Spain did you move in to ?
Personally the quality of life in Spain is unmatched anywhere else but I keep hearing from friends that education is better here.
From Madrid. Average rent is getting higher, around 1000€ for a 3 bedroom apartment. Schools are good, public daycare and good transportation.
@@Natalia-Millan Ok. Thanks. For me it will have to be a city on the Mediterranean coast and Barcelona is not doing so well after all. Day care is really good but I don’t know about public schools…anyway thank you very much. 1000 pounds for a 3 bedroom flat sounds like a bargain compared to here 😂
I'm about to move to NY with my wife and two kids for a $110k/year salary (rent is taken care of by the recruiting company). Please how best do i survive and save at least $3k monthly?

Hi New York TIF, from landlocked TN. You certainly brought up wonderful aspects of New York living I had never imagined. We drive everywhere here, but I did spend 10 years taking our laundry to the laundromat.

Very interesting! NYC is a place I’d love to visit but definitely too expensive to live there! Most populated cities are expensive I really can’t imagine how people do it. New sub here! The parking… I did my dental residency in Brooklyn and my cars has been towed because of those dreaded cleaning days. It’s definitely better not to bring a car to nyc. I love that y’all are homeschooling in the city though. We also homeschool as a military family. I’d love to be friends and connect here. I’m really enjoying your videos!

It's rare, very rare to see CZcamsrs talking about moving to ny with family. Thank you for this. My family of 3 had been talking about this for over 5 years. We both work in the medical field so we can transfer. We don't care much for the city. We love Brooklyn , we are fine with no cars, we are a very active family. A priority is finding a neighborhood that's family oriented , we thought about Park slope, cobble hill, sunset Park maybe lic or Astoria. , what neighborhood would you recommend for active families that is family friendly where everyone knows eachother with parks in every corner ?
That's cool. The neighborhoods you mentioned are good choices. Sunnyside in Queens is also a good option. There are a couple of off the beat neighborhoods in Brooklyn like Marine Park and Gerritsen Beach that are very "neighborhoody" with big parks and nature trails, but those areas are more car dependent, but are super family-friendly.
The whole getting a good parking spot and then REALLY having to think about whether the errand is worth losing that spot over is REAL. Fortunately I can walk to everything I need but it gets a little silly sometimes with hanging onto those "good" spots.

Sounds like SO much fun? Come live in Wi people. Its so beautiful! 3 bedroom $1200 new construction, parking everywhere, huge parks in towns, Performing Arts everywhere. State and National parks, sports teams and this is Short List!! Great schools universities zoos, . Visit Nyc but live in beauty 😢and community. Cultural diversity in Wi: all

Thank goodness my Dad had a car, I hated alternate side of the street parking! Lol I put my year old on top of the shopping cart full of laundry and the with two kids one was holding on to the cart walking along 😁

Left nyc as a kid for the suburbs. I’ll be raising my kids in ny when I get older.
I found this fascinating! So far from my own thinking. I would always choose a much less expensive, more comfortable, living situation. As a traveller, my savings would be used to VISIT wonderful places like NYC, and take advantages of events, theatre, museums etc. As Canadians, we have lived in Europe (as a family) and now have lived in México for over 15 years. We can afford to travel at whim, relocate and we retired early. I'm happy to see you so happy with your situation, but I know I would be worried about money and safety in your situation. Not trying to be critical, just had my eyes opened wide! Enjoying your videos...

I used a snuggly for the baby , umbrella stroller over my shoulder and a toddler in tow to take two trains to the pediatrician. We did not own a car. I was pretty fit back then.

Have you ever considered leaving NYC? Have you considered buying a place? I’ve visited NYC once or twice and I’ve always wondered could you purchase an apartment in a building
Everything has been considered lol. And yes, you can buy an apartment here.
Any tips on finding housing and apartments for families? There's so many scams looking and so many unwilling to rent to families with children is what I am finding. And have you heard of a room requirement per numbers of household members?
Truth is, it can be quite tough when looking for a family. I'm not aware of any room requirements - this seems to be up to the discretion of the landlord. Honestly, there is no easy solution for families. Older buildings will sometimes be less discriminating...and the larger ones too. But in my experience it's a matter of pounding the pavement and seeing as many places as possible. And if there's an area you like, go there! Go to the buildings and talk to the supers. You'll find many more opportunities that way!

Esp for our work-from-home families adjusting. I just gave in and went back to brick and mortar for my kids, so I am trying to make it not so hard with them having to use transit, but of course, those buildings are expensive and on that profit juice. lol Enjoying the channel!

I really wonder why people go through so much sacrifice to live in NYC. Don't get me wrong I really love the city.. but I can get pretty much all those experiences , although different.. in my current city. We also have a 5 bedroom 2 bath 2000sqft 2 suite home for about $1500 per month owned.

You hear how dangerous the subway is is this why you use A car or do you use the subway too?
I use the subway when necessary.
Detroiter here. Despite poverty porn videos, Detroit has some very nice neighborhoods. Until recently, people preferred houses over apartment living. For what you pay for one year’s rent in New York. You can buy a four bedroom house in a gated community on the river. Most housing has full sized washers and dryers. If you work from home as well as home school your children, you can live like royalty including having your own pool. Granted, you may have to drive to ethnic enclaves spread out over the city and nearby suburbs but we have diversity. Here’s the biggest drawback, transportation. You absolutely must have a car and auto insurance is sky high BUT what you save in housing you could afford frequent trips by air to New York. Face it, you’re not going to a restaurant, museum or Broadway show every week, not with a family of six. Detroit. Think about it. Just saying.

Same concept applies to Silicon Valley where I had the fortune of living and working for 20+years. Wouldn't be moving to Detroit even for a free house.

I always said if I could, I would raise kids in NYC because they would be acclimated to people who are culturally different than they are and that diversity is what’s lacking in most parts of the United States.

I think it's like a lot of cities, some are great and some are terrible. We homeschool for many reasons, but we really like the flexibility it offers for our kids's different learning styles.

Crime is always something you need to be aware of. I generally feel safe walking alone, at the same time, I never let my guard down. So take that for what it's worth, I guess lol. I think awareness of one's surroundings is paramount in any big city.
