Good question, and this week I spill the tea on all our budget tips and tricks, including the average rent in Manhattan, what we pay for our Midtown apartment, and how we swing private school tuition costs for all these kiddos.

LOL...I paid only $90 dollars a month for a one bedroom , one bath, large eat in kitchen , living room apt on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the early 1970s when I was single and working as a fashion illustrator, and that was rent controlled, an old brownstone! With two roomates that was $30 dollars each! Then I rented a brand new studio apt. when I moved to the suburbs, with AC, a full walk in closet, huge linen closet, galley kitchen, one bath with tub along with swimming pool/tennis courts for just $162 a month! That same apt on the Upper East Side, now renovated goes for $2500 - 3000 a month for one person! Used to pay just 10 dollars a month for food and next to nothing for utilities! Subway fare was 35 cents a ride, movies were $1.25, a drink at a single's bar was around 2 -3 dollars! A bounced check was just $3.00!! What are the skyrocketed prices today! And we thought inflation was bad in the 1970s?? HA!! I wouldn't pay any of the exhorbitant prices today that have gone through the stratosphere since then, just shows you just how GREEDY people have gotten these days and everything keeps on going up and up..the landlords, real estate, property taxes, home insurance, the greedy banks with their outlandish fees!

Those prices made my heart stop! I'm a renter in Kansas. We have a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house with garage parking. Rent is $1030 a month with renter's insurance and our public schools have music and sports programs. I spend about $800 a month on groceries for my giant family of 8. ❤️

Ya but no one likes Kansas. NYC is in a league of its own. You’re paying a premium to live in the greatest city on Earth. Sure it’s dirty, stinks and over crowded with tourist but there’s something magical about the energy in the air. My wife, daughter and I caught a Broadway show and I must have counted 9 different languages being spoken around me. Heck you hear it just walking down 42nd and 5th Ave. The food in NYC is like no other, must have been a trillion places to choose from. You just can’t get that anywhere else let alone Kansas. Until you visit, you’ll never be able to understand why so many ppl sacrifice there space and finances in order to be apart of this special place called New York.
There should be a tv show about this!!! Soo interesting how cities are different. Here in TN gas is $2.80 gal, 2% gal milk $2.50, pound of hamburger 90% is $3.19, houses $190-270 sq ft(avg home 3200). No state tax. Private schools are $10k year…public is decent with all having sports and college prep, homeschooling is high by choice. Fast food hiring in at $15 hr.

This was so awesome. I think the city (I.e.Manhattan) is the greatest place on earth, so I get why you want to live there and school and shop in Jersey! You sound like a very special mamma.
The housing market and cost of living sounds very similar to Hawaii.

Okay, this blew my mind. Learning that my monthly mortgage on our 1600 sq foot house with 1 acre of land is roughly the same price as a parking space rental in Manhatten is just crazy to think about. I love New York city but will just keep visiting for now. Also I will wake up tomorrow a bit more appreciative for what I have. Thanks for the video, it's always great to see how families live in other areas and the different, yet similar, struggles we all face.
Yessss! We are in the Hudson valley now in 3000 feet paying less than what we did in the city. Crazy, right?

My parents live on the Upper west side and they always managed to find parking on the street, and it was always amazing my fiance and I live also upper west side as well he's not used to finding parking on the street

Bryce Gruber or just don’t live in manhattan? there’s no reason to within one of the most interconnected cities on the planet. nyc is one of the only cities in the Western Hemisphere where it simply doesn’t make sense to have a car.

I live in NY but basically do everything in Jersey & I especially love that I never have to pump my own gas there haha but holy moly I couldn't imagine going between Manhattan and Jersey mainly because the toll on the GW is ridiculous

Wow! I always complain about preschool prices as I’m paying $750 for 3 kids per week in the Midwest. Florida was really expensive for preschool as well but had good public schools once the kids got older.
Pack, Eat, Repeat seems like a lot in the Midwest! I always talk about the fantasy of Ohio with a close friend of mine 😂
I just started the process to figuring out what would be to live in NYC with 100K a year. I would move from Europe to NYC with my wife and our two children for three years. The experience would be priceless, but renting an apartment looks cracy! Nice video, thanks
You could easily find a nice apt. nearby in Queens or Brooklyn for much less. Manhattan like any big urban city is ridiculous. My nephew lives outside San Francisco in San Mateo and pays $4000 a month for 2 bedrooms/2bath and groceries, gas and childcare is very expensive. I wouldn't run to California too fast either.
My husband just got a job in NYC, Manhatten. We're moving from California, so we know a little about expensive real-estate. We have 2 boys with my eldest in kindergarten so good public schools are very important to us. We want a yard and would like to avoid apartment living but NYC is where the job is. My question for you is, if we wanted to rent in New Jersey, what areas do you recommend for an easy commute into the city?

I love the city. Wish I could live there! We live in Connecticut (hey neighbor!) We’re paying for preschool right now and it’s $115 a week for TWO days and I think that’s outrageous haha.

We ended up leaving Manhattan (but I supposed most families did during the pandemic). We're upstate now :)
We live in a burb of Atlanta. Our home is about 2500 square feet and our mortgage is $1500. Private school here is about $25-30k for the great ones.

Omg I think the uk is cheap then compared to USA. Our rent is £650 a month a total all in food etc we pay about £1500 a month.

The best place to stay and raise the family in terms of safety and conservative environment and reasonable to my school.
I did hear upper west is more affordable. Especially Washington heights. My wife is thinking the same to do her Phd there . You rarely see videos on youtube for families movies to NY for affordability . I am glad we found this video

If you want a typical comfortable "white collar" lifestyle as a nuclear family in NYC with 2 kids, without frills, in 2023, you'll prob need a household income of at least 200k, maybe more like 300k.

You really don't answer the question of what it costs to raise kids in NYC, do you?. You give some facts about the cost of private schools and the cost of kosher chicken but that is just about it.

I don’t get the excitement of New York honestly. I get people that come from there and are just used to it but from an outsider’s prospective, it seems completely insane.
40K a year per child. Holy moly that’s a salary!
Our Family Does THATS what I’m saying! I feel like the answer for most New Yorkers is either to have small families, compromise on education, work so hard you never breathe, or all of the above.
40k is just starting point. Add on tutors, activities, an then annual giving campign.
