David Straithairn had so much fun on the show in the 3rd season he asked if he could be in another season. And so the show runners extended Ashford's story line into this season. When an actor like him asks to be in your show you say 'Yes!'

One of the little things not many notice but really does wonders for Season 4 here is the Change in Aspect Ratio between areas.
To really sell the Frontier/Western like theme you may notice the Aspect Ratio when on planet changes. its a normal 16:9 everywhere else BUT on Ilus it has that cinimatic widescreen ratio. I thought that was a really neat little detail.

When Naomi got back to the Rosci, she found Amos unconscious and wounded.
I'm pretty sure that the only reason Amos wasn't as excited as he ever gets is because he could barely think, at all.
Naomi is also struggling with disappointment in this part of the season.
The subtext, here, is that while a visit to Earth may not thrill Naomi, generally, she'd very much like to visit Holden's family, in his childhood home, and it's becoming increasingly obvious, to her, that she may never be able to do that.
At some point, if you'd like to see some of the inspiration for this season, you might enjoy, "A Fistful of Dollars," and Sergio Leone's magnum opus, "Once Upon a Time in the West."
In the latter, you might have fun comparing Henry Fonda's character with Burn Gorman's, and both are great films, all by themselves.
A tight-beam encryption module would allow someone to send an encrypted message via a tight-beam laser to an antenna with one of those things, and it could forward the signal on, also with a tight-beam laser, to any other module, and bounce the message from one to the next, until it reached its destination.
It's basically like using an highly-encrypted VPN tunnel that stretches across the Solar System, to anywhere that has one of those devices and, unlike a modern VPN, nobody could even tell you're using it, because it acts as its own network.
Just because this season is *mostly* a Western doesn't mean it isn't also a spy-thriller. 😁
Hrm. Hard science fiction is really hard to do, and very few even try.
Movies would be The Martian, Gravity, and Moon.
There aren't any hard sci-fi TV series I can think of, but if you want beautifully-written, character-driven, gritty, high-stakes space-operas, try Babylon 5 in addition to the two you mentioned.

Lightning stopped at the islands on the other side of the planet. You may or may not be right when you say it's probably not the end of that story.

For All Mankind is great. Chernobyl is fantastic (and stars Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgard). Better Call Saul is a masterclass in long-form, multi-season TV writing and production. Animal Kingdom is a great 4 (edit: 6 season) season story, too.

The complicated situation Bobbie found herself in on Mars, with organized crime (which eventually is linked to....uh...major story elements that I will not spoil cuz the books end a bit different)....it was actually so compelling that the authors published a short-story detailing exactly what she and her family went through. There's several of those short stories that fill in the time gap between novels for fan-fave characters. Definitely a recommended reading. The show did a good job of incorporating those stories into the main plotline, but the books are far more detailed.

Ok, a couple of points: 1. it’s interesting how different the takeaway or perception of interactions can be from different viewers. You refer to the scene when Naomi came back to the ship and Amos asked if she was here to stay. She said yes, and he replied “Ok.” Amos was still injured, perhaps concussed and Amos is famous for his short, very matter of fact answers. I read this as Amos thinking “Ok, you’re back, it’s settled, going back to sleep now, but simply stated as “Ok.” 2. The Expanse writers are masters at developing some of the best villains in SCI-FI.

  • @jenssylvesterwesemann7980

Been suggesting this show to several reactors, but it seems that anything on the AppleTV+ streaming service has a bad standing because it is yet another and rather new service you need to pay for. But they also have the intriguing and visually stunning sci-fi show "Foundation" (1 season so far) which is loosely based on Isaac Asimov's novels of the same name. The actor Jared Harris who played Anderson Dawes in The Expanse has a major role in it (also the reason why he never came back).

Angela, as much as you're loving this season of the TV show, you are going to _really_ love the book it's adapted from. There's _so_ many more scientific discoveries, descriptions of animals, weather, terrain, etc. Elvie Okoye (the scientist) is probably second only to Holden in terms of the amount she's in the book (literary screen time? book time?). While book 3's adaptation suffered from time crunch (they figured they were going to get more time to tell that story), I think book 4 suffered from the adaptation process the most of any of them. That is, the story contains a lot more stuff that doesn't adapt well (mostly internal monologues) than the other books which, while still having internal monologues, have a lot more action and intreague.

It is easy to dislike Murtry because of both the writing and the good acting by Burn Gorman ( He plays a really good bad guy/asshole in a lot of shows and movies). However just remember who drew first blood. The Belters did try to kill not only him but a lot of innocent people before they even landed, including the scientist working with Holden and Alex. A lot of innocent people did die because of the attack on the ship. Now I do not excuse his execution of the first Belter but it is easy to understand why he did it. Plus the group were planning to kill him and several others during that meeting before the ambush. That is not right either. They have no more to play judge, jury and executioner than Murtry does.

  • @fakecubed
    @fakecubed Před rokem +3

Babylon 5 is old, the special effects aren't that great, particularly at first, but it's the show that's closest to The Expanse in terms of high stakes, character-driven scifi with an ongoing, epic story. Many people consider The Expanse a spiritual successor to Babylon 5. Each season of that show was essentially a book, even though it was a TV original. The entire plot for the five seasons of the show was planned out in advance, and it shows. It was really the first television series to do anything like it, and nothing has quite been like it since, although The Expanse is probably closest.
Babylon 5 fans will come to your channel if you start watching it. There are not many reactions for it, but the fandom is very dedicated and they'll be very excited to see anyone new watching it. The series has 22 episode seasons, so you'll get lots of content out of it, too. I think you'll enjoy speculating on all the many mysteries, and like The Expanse, Babylon 5 does have answers to questions it raises, but you'll have to be a bit patient to get them.
Some non-spoiler notes if you decide to watch it, so you get the best possible experience...
The first season can be a little rough. Some of the acting is, well, as bad as some Star Trek shows in their first season or two. But it's an important season to the characters and plot, and season 2 really takes off like a rocket and the show is great after that. That's not to say the first season is bad, but there are a few scenes, characters, and episodes that are not that amazing. But there are also some actors and stories that absolutely kill it, even in season 1. Just remember it's merely the first act of a five act story; it's mostly about introductions.
Another thing to look out for is the TV movies, that were a part of the show's continuity. Most notable in this is the TV movie "The Gathering", which served as the series pilot. Some people mistakenly skip it, and watch the first episode "Midnight on the Firing Line" first instead, but you'll want to watch the movie pilot first if you watch the series.
Then there's the TV movie "In the Beginning". Very important: do not watch it in the beginning! Typically it is watched right after season 4, which corresponds to broadcast order. Without spoiling anything, it's a movie where one of the characters is much older and is telling the story of some things that happened before the time period in which Babylon 5 takes place. It reveals some interesting details about events that we've heard about throughout the series, but it also shows a little of the future because of the way the story is framed. It can be watched after season 5 if you want to avoid any of these future hints, but I think there's value in watching it after season 4 as intended.
Chronologically, the TV movie "Thirdspace" takes place during the events of the fourth season episode "Moments of Transition". You can watch it after that episode and not spoil anything for yourself. It's also a TV movie you can skip until later, as it doesn't really have anything to do with the main plot of the series, although the movie does refer to those events. Same with the TV movie "River of Souls", which chronologically takes place after the fifth season episode "Objects at Rest". You can wait until after watching the end of the series and it won't affect anything.
The remaining two movies both tried to work as pilots for spin-off series. One of these was a successful effort ("A Call to Arms"), and the other was not ("The Legend of the Rangers"). I would suggest waiting to decide if you want to watch the spin-off (called Crusade) before watching either one. I'll note here that Crusade got really screwed over by the network in truly spectacular fashion. So, if you do watch it, don't watch it in original broadcast order. The creator of both series, J. Michael Straczynski, gave an official viewing order that can be found online.
And finally there are direct-to-DVD episodes called "The Lost Tales", which are a pair of 40 minute episodes with a couple additional stories from the Babylon 5 universe, which should be watched last.

Sunshine is effin brilliant. It has one of the most misunderstood third acts in film history. Most people think the third ac goes off the rails, not realizing the thematic brilliance of it. For clarification of what um talking about a youtuber "Movies with Mikey" for Filmjoy does a great breakdown of it. Plus "Sunshine" is one of the most beautifully shot movies of all time! That and the acting alone make the movie worth watching.

To add to the Mars situation and what's not really talked on much in the show is that fact that Mars and its colony's are in a system where everyone is to contribute to Mars though either service, the terraforming project or whoever else all in the service of Mars. So you have to think of why the ring gates change that, Once the rings became a thing, it puts in the questions why Martians still are trying to terraform there rock when there are so many options now. Bobbies storyline reflects the mentality of many martians that previously gave everything in service of Mars and how that has changed where people see a new alternative. Its completely filled the power dynamics and politics of the place though one factor outside of Mars's control which makes this show feel so alive and believable.

Also the quarry that they film Ilus in has been used in Star Trek discovery, killjoys as well as the beach where Holden had his vision and Vought hq is the same building as the UN (Roy Thompson hall in downtown Toronto)
    Recommendations for shows:
BSG and firefly- keep in mind that BSG reactions get copyright strikes regularly so alter your footage accordingly. I’m not the biggest Firefly fan (imho it’s overhyped) but it’ll get you a lot of views!
Babylon 5- like The Expanse the story was planned out in advance by J Michael Strazynski so it tells a complete story and it’s well worth the journey. 90s Video Toaster fx but the story makes up for it!
Westworld- very interesting ideas about AI and robotics and the effects on society.
Foundation- Based on the Asimov books and the awesome Jared Harris as Hari Seldon!
Person of Interest- amazing series that explores the ideas of the surveillance state, moral implications of an AI, hacking and information collection by both electronic and human interactions; one of my favourite shows in the past 20 years
The Peripheral- I’m biased because I’m a big fan of William Gibson but the show is probably one of the best adaptations of his books. An exploration of virtual reality, time travel and the bleeding of the virtual world into the real one. Really great stuff.
For All Mankind- you said you already saw the first season so I propose that you react to all 10 episodes and get Xander to edit it all into an abridged single reaction where you can express your thoughts on each episode and you could make the uncut reactions patreon exclusive for those who want to see more. I’m hoping you’ll react to it because it gets so much more intriguing and exciting as it goes on
Stargate everything- I’m recommending it but I think you’ve already seen it all!

As for other movies/series: Expanse is sort of in a league of its own. Can’t think of anything in that same hard-sci-fi-with-great-characters vein. But…
I know you didn’t think Andor was good for reactions, and I totally get that, but I hope you had a chance to enjoy it on your own. I personally love that it’s not nostalgia-wank and cameo bingo, but is instead overtly political, morally grey (still anti-fascist, thankfully) and “grounded”.
In the more popcorny sci-fi department, Star Trek Strange New Worlds is pretty good, and Star Trek Lower Decks is both hilarious and has a lot of heart. Kinda like Futurama, which is an evergreen of course.
In the non-sci-fi shortlist there’s Chernobyl, which is just so damn good. It’s bleak and horrifying of course and all the more so since it’s fairly historically accurate. It’s a must-see that I don’t wish on anyone. It’s just brilliant.
And I’ve said it before but I really think you’d enjoy Midnight Mass :)
As for those you yourself mentioned:
Firefly is good fun of course - be sure to watch the Serenity movie (sort of series finale) too at the end.
Battlestar is pretty good too. Was a big fan back in the day, but I gotta admit it has aged somewhat. You kinda have to cast your mind back to the Bush years to contextualize certain parts, since it’s a product of its time. It’s also got an uneasy mix of bottle episodes and overarching-story episodes which detracts a little.

So Naren Shankar, who was the show runner for The Expanse, was also a writer and producer on my vote for the greatest scifi TV show of all time. Which would be Farscape. It is full on space-opera (where as The Expanse is a more grounded harder scifi space-opera), but full of amazing characters with brilliant character arcs and a lot of truly alien looking and acting aliens (in addition to some of the more traditional "bumpy forehead" Star Trek style aliens). Something that didn’t really get extrapolated on which was made more clear in the book was the Belters’ logistic situation. They aren’t self-sufficient on Ilus, they don’t have a manufacturing base to replace anything that wears out or the Earth biomatter available to grow enough food for themselves; they need their ship, the Barbapicolla, to make the months-long run back to Sol, sell the lithium they’ve been mining, and bring back food and other necessities. They have to plan months and years in advance.
Also one small error I noticed, the people who were spaced in the last episode weren’t Belters, they were Earthers on a colony ship who were waiting at the blockade at the ring, wanting to go through but not allowed to. Think of it like wagon trains wanting to go west - there’s actually a lot of parallels to that in this season, with the OPA taking a role akin to First Nations, trying to hold on to their sovereignty and identity while a larger power takes what it wants and demands more and more concessions.

And yeah, knowing what we know about the protomolecule, attacking it runs the risk of it fighting back. Was definitely a hell of a risk by Holden.
You're likely on the mark with Nancy re: her coming from basic and potentially cheating her way into a higher position. If the system is rigged against the poor and disenfranchised, you have to imagine a lot of folks wouldn't hate someone for gaming it and getting to the top so long as they remembered to fix what was wrong in the first place. Crisjen's never had that struggle, she comes from a powerful family (which we learned in S1), and the power of nepotism saw her safely onto her current career track and into her current position of power, she has no room to criticize Nancy for skipping the line when she skipped it as well by the nature of the class she was born into. In a hypothetical future like The Expanse, with the world so heavily populated and with so many having no real future progression or dreams within reach, the process of inheritance is so much more pronounced, not just in material wealth, but also connections. I'm not sure Crisjen, for all her intelligence and wit, has the wisdom to realize the full scope of this.
And yes, we need more Miller so we can get answers!
As for other shows, I'll second the recommendations for The Leftovers(mystery drama/philosophical character study; 3 seasons and 28 episodes), and also forward Sense8 (sci-fi/mystery; 2 seasons and 24 episodes), season 1 of True Detective (character study/mystery; 8 episodes), and Battlestar Galactica (sci-fi/drama; 77-ish episodes/movies), and an underdog in Justified (Crime Drama; 6 seasons and 78 episodes) one of the best shows of the past 20 years (I am not typically a fan of crime dramas, they usually bore me to tears, but the writing in the show is impeccable and the acting is top notch), but the length of the show is a bit intimidating and not many have reacted to it.
For movies, if you haven't seen Arrival, I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a sci-fi drama and it's visually one of the most stunning films, and narratively wonderful. IMO Denis Villeneuve's best film, and possibly Amy Adams' best performance. Keeping with Denis, if you haven't seen Bladerunner 2049, it's a fantastic sci-fi drama as well (you'd want to see the original fist if you haven't, though, it's essentially required to fully understand this one), and Ryan Gosling is fantastic in it.

He'd been slammed nearly to death (the equivalent of falling a couple of stories) and had just awakened from a short coma. How much smiling was he likely to be doing? Second, Amos has zero subtext. If he says, "Okay" he means he's fully "okay" with it, or he'd have said otherwise. He even noticed instantly that she'd changed her hair (which is a shadow of a personality fault she had in the book that they thankfully did not include in the series).

Amazon had posted some "campaign spots" from Avasarala and Gao on CZcams...very interesting. But, alas, they've removed them. Maybe they're still available somewhere.
In addition to things others have mentioned, I'd add "Travellers," which is a very smart time travel drama that uses the Quantum Leap method in an intriguing manner. A team from the dystopic future has traveled to the past to prevent their future. They have each occupied the body of someone in the "present" (yes, it kills that person, but they select people who they know had been actually been killed in the last seconds before they occupied the body). But they don't really know much more than that about the bodies they occupy...and they still have to continue that person's life to remain undercover. So, for instance, the team assassin has occupied the body of an abused housewife, and must go on being the abused housewife. The team philosopher (technically, the oldest man alive) has occupied the body of a popular-but-shallow high school jock.

I'm referring to the 2004-09 remake, not the 1978-79 original. BSG shares the title with The Expanse for best sci-fi series of the past 20 years. A must-see for anyone who loves the genre, who appreciates plot complexity and extraordinary character arcs, and who likes being challenged with existential themes and moral dilemmas that force them to think.

You mentioned that you're a big Star Trek fan- it'd be great to see you go through your favorites of the four series- particularly DS9, which I think is as close to the Expanse's politics and close knit crew as Trek gets.

Star Trek fans, particularly Deep Space Nine fans, owe it to themselves to watch Babylon 5 if they haven't seen it. It is not Star Trek, it's not trying to be Star Trek although many Star Trek fans mistakenly compare the two a lot (the similarities are there, but only in the most superficial ways). As a fan of both, who was a fan of Star Trek first, I really wish I had gotten into Babylon 5 sooner than I did. It really is great.

RE shows similar to The Expanse - Babylon 5, a space opera with elements of political thriller. Rings a bell, right?
As for other sci-fi and fantasy shows - I, for one, would love to see your reactions to Firefly (+ Serenity full-length movie), Warehouse 13 (lighthearted, even silly sometimes, but with great story and awesome characters), Neil Gaiman's Good Omens and maybe The Good Place (though I get an impression it's a hard one to get through copyright issues).
The Dresden Files (stories about a wizard PI) and Almost Human (police procedural set in future with androids and electric sheep) are two of my other favourite shows, but both were cancelled after just one season. Though they provide great entertainment, they also leave me with a feeling of slight incompleteness - if you're OK with that, I definitely recommend to check them out. Altered carbon is another, even more controversial one (first season is great, second season is quite meh).
Judging by the previous content on your channel I'm led to beleive you're not into war and history dramas - but if you are, Chernobyl and Band of Brothers are the ones I'd like to see you watch.

Mars is indeed changing. Pay attention to that story thread - not that I expect less, but just emphasizing. Word of the day is “ramifications” but that’s all I’ll say.
And yeah, Nancy Gao - anyone willing to go toe to toe with Chrisjen is not to be trifled with, no matter if you agree or disagree. Honestly, if her whole campaign is just “I’m not scared of Avasarala” and no policy platform I’d still be plenty impressed.

Are you finishing Andor? There are still 9 episodes you haven’t gone through. It’s the best Star Wars TV series, IMO.
There’s also Space: Above and Beyond (1995). It unfortunately did not get renewed after the 1st season so it ends on a cliffhanger but it’s worth a watch.
