    Thanks for that, I've been trying for a few days to see which side the bias is on.
    It's probably very basic but people need to know these things.

      Glad to have helped. Yes, basic, but very important. It takes a while to suss it out, but it certainly helps. :)

    Thanks Alec. My wife and I just started lawn bowling here in Laguna Beach CA (we're both originally from Glasgow). I started trying to use the "claw" grip with the thumb and forefinger on the grip and with a slight space between the C shape of the thumb and forefinger. I found that I just couldn't get a smooth release with this grip. I have changed to using the technique you describe in this video (I believe it is known as a palm grip) and am having more success with a smooth release. Should I just stick with the "palm" grip or should I persevere with the claw grip? I know you will probably say jut do what works but in many pro videos I watch on CZcams they seem to favor the claw grip.
    Cheers.
    Bill

      Hi Bill, I think you should see what suits you best. We call it the cradle grip here. I do find new bowlers find it easier to use, but I do show the claw grip later on in the course in case they prefer it and some do. I think the claw grip is fine on a fast surface, as some say they 'feel' the bowl more, I know what they mean. However, on slow surfaces (outdoors in the UK) the cradle grip tends to help obtain distance better as the palm of the hand helps push the bowl along. As I say, try both and find the one that you get more consistent with. Good luck to you both.

    thank you for your video. I have a interesting question to raise up. Assume same wave, green, direction.. and so on, just a touching point is not middle of the bowl in the running surface, for example like ring finger on the running surface. What do you think the outcome from the normal one. Some one call it "check"the bowl to make it narrower or wider.

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 2 lety

      Yes, I have seen it done, but not that often. Achieved by placing fingers so the bowl runs differently, basically holding the line longer. I have tried myself, but did not manage to get good enough results because if you get it slightly wrong the bowl can wobble offline. I did that more often than not. :) Better players than me can do it, but I see it rarely used as it takes great skill.

    Bowls running straight down the middle of the green? What about the implementation of "straight" bowls by some companies? I would be interested in your opinion. I have been playing bowls for over 42 years and feel that "straight" bowls take out a lot of the skill of the game.

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem +1

      Personally, I think that bowls that run too narrow can be a handicap as you can get blocked, so I don't mind people using them. If they block their opponent out it should be easy enough for the opponent to bowl around them, so I never quite understand what all the fuss is about. However, I would not like to see them become any narrower than they currently are. What I do find odd is when a player complains about narrower line bowls been used on a fast green (indoors for example) and yet they play with bowls that take a very wide line. I have seen players use Lignoids indoors! which are not what they are designed for. That is their choice, but they should not complain when someone uses what are essentially indoor bowls, indoors! 🤣

    Hi Alec, which bowls have the narrowest bias please?

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem

      I have used three models of narrow bowls, there is nothing between them. Drakes Pride Advantage, Thomas Taylor Lazors and Aero Defiance. Henselite also make Tiger Tx but I have not tried them, but they are similar to the other three. All are nice, but are for indoor play only, not ideal for outdoor play, unless the green is super fast. Hope this helps. See various charts online. Just type lawn bowls bias charts. Thanks. Alec

    What is the dimension and in which material make this lawn bowl can you tell me

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem

      The material is a composite plastic. Dimensions vary depending on size. Smallest to largest is: 0000, 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Although 6 and 7s are not made anymore I think, but you can still find them second hand. I use 1's although I can get away with 2's indoors. It is very important to try out different sizes and make sure you find a set that is comfortable in your hand in all conditions. Watch Lawn Bowls for Fun 2, Which bowls to use.

    Bias Marking. Did you know that there is actually a law about stickers on bowls.

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem

      Do you mean the fact you should not put a new sticker over an old one? A good point, I could have mentioned that.

    • @petersaunders747
      @petersaunders747 Před rokem

      @@LawnBowlsforFun Hi Alec, (may I call you that?) yes putting new stickers on top of old is against the laws, Also if a sticker is coming off and the result of an end is reliant on a measure, the The sticker that is coming off is considered as part and parcel of the bowl. I expect you know this anyway.

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem

      @@petersaunders747 yes, a law not many know about. I know it is unlikely, but it stops players putting several stickers on top of each other to gain an advantage in measuring. Would anyone do that? I would hope not, but that law stops it happening anyway. It would have been a good point to mention, had I thought of it. 😬 Hopefully, anyone watching the video will read this. 🤞are you from Jack High Bowls? If so, I love the website. 👍
