- Clay S. Jenkinson employs the Chautauquan methodology of a stand-up, unscripted monologue in his first-person portrayal of Meriwether Lewis. His educational, humorous, and delightful monologue is followed by an in-character question and answer session with the audience, and ends with Jenkinson sharing his own insights into the character of Captain Lewis and the expedition.
citeThe Federalist/cite called the Louisiana Purchase "the wildest chimera of a moonstruck mind"; Thomas Jefferson referred to it as a "two ocean continental empire for liberty"; and Meriwether Lewis, captain of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition, thought it was the opportunity of a lifetime to be the first citizen of the United States to step foot on the unexplored wilderness of the American West.
How on Earth does he remember so many lines... wonderful preformance!!
Very cool to finally see this on YT. I recorded this with a video capture card from History Channel and put on a DVD almost 20 years ago since I wasn't sure if I'd ever find it again. Thanks for putting this up GBH as now I can share it.
Thank you!!!!
This is an interesting way of presenting the journals
Great to hear a story from authentic journal source. Recent trends retell according to latest fashionable narrative. Sorry to say but true.
Thank you for your comment. It does our ancestors a disservice to judge them from our comfortable seats in the 21st century.
Bravo! 👏
So grateful this is posted, but is there a version with better resolution?
Sorry. It's from our archives and a time where HD wasn't as common as it is now.
Who did all the survey?
Did you build an ark in Arkansas?? Did you build an ark in Kansas?

How many times did Lewis and Clarke encounter French Trappers in their expedition-indeed all along the way they did yet the narrative is they "discovered" the northwest and were the first civilized men to set foot in the Northwest of what is now the United States. Some credit where credit is due. No doubt this was a difficult journey but all along they way they got advice and assistance along the to "discover" lands never seen by a "white civilized man". The French learned from the natives but they at least always give them their due.
Interesting observation, perhaps you should read up before commenting 📘
