- After many years of dreaming and a good few months of hunting, I've finally landed myself a BMW 5 Series (E39). The car is a 2003 520i, among the final batch production built locally at the AMIM plant in Shah Alam before the E60 rolled in.
For starters, the car was bought from a used car dealer in Bandar Sunway .. a highly pleasant experience. Salesman was honest with the car's condition and responsive to enquiries.
The car transacted at a price of RM24k including road tax and insurance.
I've had to pump in a further RM3k at Wearnes to fix the following
- engine oil change
- cylinder head gasket
- spark plugs (x6)
- ignition coils (x6)
- rear brake pads
- undercarriage covers
Car is also in need of new tyres and, further down the road, refurbishment of the front suspension.

Hi Kon,Congrats on your purchase. 20 years on and the E39 is still an extremely handsome looking car. Other than the things that were changed in this video, you also need to check the following items; 1 - Cooling system, critical if you have no history of this from the previous owner, Check/replace all hoses, replace thermostat, replace water pump and its pulley, replace the radiator, replace the expansion tank. 2 - Check/replace the serpentine belt, check/replace the idler pulley, check/replace the tensioner pulley. 3 - Replace all fluids ie. automatic trans, power steering, brake fluid, engine oil (which you've done), differential fluid. 4. Fuel filter. 5. Check all suspension bushes front and rear including roll bar bushes and links, absorber mounting front and rear. 6. Check engine, transmission and differential bushes. 7. Check steering linkage/coupler. 8. Check drive shaft flexdisk (possiblly worn rubber coupling). 9. Check for vacuum leaks ie.check/replace all the rubber hoses connected to the inlet manifold. 10. Check for oil leaks at the oil pan, power steering rack, oil filter housing which is mounted and mated to the front part of the engine block. 11. Check the DISA valve. 12. Check for leaky (oily) hose to the VANOS. 13. Check the tie rods rubber boots at front suspension. 14. Check the rear wheels rubber boots shafts....These are the ones that i could think of based on my experience with the e36...yes, lots to be on the lookout for an aged bimmer, but if the intention is to enjoy it and keep it for sometime these may be worthwhile. The Wearnes team found no leaks beyond what has already been spotted. Next items to look at will be the front suspension.. a few arms have worn bushes.
Will definitely flush out and replace all fluids within this year.

Congratulations on your buy, Sir! I own an E39 523i built in 1998 which has done so far 233000 km without any problems. I guess I will never sell this car because of the wonderful inline 6 - cylinder and the overall outstanding quality of the e39. Best wishes! AM

Hi Kon. Hope you are doing well. I have found an E39 that I wanted to buy. But i noticed that there's a slight crack at Engine Center Cowl and one of the Microfilter Air Channel have fall off a bit. Is it something i should be concern of? Are those parts expensive i.e in the hundreds or thousand? The one i saw is the 2003 520i model.

Congrats finally... Since you replace head gasket why don't consider fully overhaul all the bearing and seal in the engine.... Peace of mind. Or in plan to swap bigger engine.. v8 can be fit in too...

Great.Most young people.prefer the E46.It came with a wide variety of engines varying from the early 1.9 to the 330i .I have used both.I personally prefer the E46.Mine had athr M54 2.2 6 cylinder engine 170 bhp enough power for me and goes like a bullet.Its body size and engine to body weight ration is also just right
It has better road feel responds and handles better.The best way to compare both is to run the cars on roads with bends and gradients The E39 is slightly more roomy is quieter and has a softer ride and suspension.Matter of personal preference really.
The 2.2 and the E46's lighter body would make a decently potent combination. They never officially sold it in Malaysia though. For the LCI version, BMW only sold the 318i 2.0 inline-4 and straight up to the 325i. There was the 330i too, but I think it sold in smaller numbers. The 2.2 is a beautifully sweet motor, but it does need to work hard to shift the E39's heavy body. Hence, despite its much smaller capacity, I dont enjoy any fuel economy advantage over the 528i or 530i.

Congrats. The lure of a sweet inline 6 was too strong to resist. Of course, upgrade first to 17, or even 18 inch rims if you can.
congratulations on your purchase kon....i think you should just keep the tyre size, if you upsize the wheels than you will sacrifice some cushion and it also add more stress to your suspension components
I m going 235/45 R17 with 17" x 8J wheels. These are still factory recommended sizes, so should be okay for the suspension and driveline. Many E39s out there have pushed to 18, which I m reluctant to go.

I was amazed by the condition when I saw it. Was aiming for a 525, but the car's condition convinced me to settle for a 520
e39...good shit. Every well know for its solid suspension and build quality. You should however looked for a 523i minimum just for that extra torque.
I was actually aiming for a 525i M54, but took this 520i for its condition.

Seems Asia got the orange tail lights. I changed mine over to a set of factory Hella clear turn signal Euro style tail lights. HUGE difference.
Also, a boot lid lip spoiler, same as M5 really looks good. They sell them already painted titanium silver same your car on eBay, like $40. Both look great and are still original factory type stuff.

hey kon, currently I'm researching on E60 525i Facelift (2009).
found 2 models with different mileage.
could you explain what are the things need to check when purchasing E60 facelift model?
highly appreciate to get some info on the E60.
Not as familiar with the E60, but most famous weak point would be the Active Steering system. Costly fix. Also, check whether the ATF has been changed before. BMW Malaysia recommends sealed ATF for life, which isn't ideal for our climate. So, if the owner follows that recommendation to the letter, you're looking at eventual transmission failure. Oil consumption is also a known issue, so keep a spare can of engine oil handy.

The real problem with the tyres is they are 7 years old! Not grippy anymore. What a waste. The best looking wheel for the E39 is the AC Schnitzer Type III 18". The version without the studs. They were designed for this car and are just meant to be.

So Kon, I'm pretty sure this car doesn't have ISO fix, so will you install it or use the conventional seat belt way?
ISOFIX was indeed offered in the E39 as a cost option in EU. One UK unit I looked at had them, but I didnt buy it because I couldnt justify the asking price for its condition.
@@KonWaiLuen I learned an expensive lesson, bought an 2nd hand W211 280. Local spec, didn't realize it doesn't have ISOFIX. Kena an earful from wife. Hahaha. anyway it is always satisfying to find a good condition 2nd hand car instead of a new 1.
