So true. When I was 17 i was a bus boy in New York for $6 an hour off the books... the only other bus boy was a middle aged Mexican man and this guy made the job look easy. He could carry 4 trash bags and two sets of dishwasher crates filled with glass cups up flights of stairs without breaking a sweat. First week on the job was brutal, I damn near needed a chiropractor... long behold this guy was doing it for years with no issues and supporting a family of 6. My dad is 61 & born in Mexico.. immigrated to the US at 16 (alone). Worked in the fields, went to college, and lived alone until he was 30. He got his bachelor’s degree at 32 years old… started his own company, and got into Real Estate. After a lifetime of struggle.. he became a self-made millionaire at 57 and his company is now worth over $20 million. I hope to one day get to the level he has. He’s worked his ass off his whole life. Got no handouts. Learnt the hard way. Never was complacent and always moved forward…. Want to be clear… my dad is wealthy… I’m not. He’s made it clear that he’ll support his children.. but we have to fend for ourselves and make our own money. He’s there to give us knowledge and advice. And I couldn’t agree more. I’d much rather learn from him and do it on my own than him hiring me for his company and paying me over $100k/year for doing nothing or him paying my cars, house, etc. It’s His money and now he’s close to retiring. Didn’t get wealthy until his mid-fifties. Just hard work and perseverance. Viva Mexico cabrones!!!! Si se puede! Love you pops!

There was a ridiculous difference in how emotionally stable and energetic I was when I was isolating myself from the world during a years long depressive episode versus when I went to college and spent every day joking around and making new friends and attending various social gatherings, in fact going to college and making an effort to be social just about cured my depression.
That's a really extreme example but to me it proves that having good social bonds and making time to maintain them is a vital part of being a healthy and effective person, but it has also made me aware how rare that is in my culture. Now that I'm done with college I have no community, only a few dear friends who live far enough away that seeing them with any regularity is impossible.
