Why You Need to Make Your Own Telescope Parts

  • Simply put: 3D-printed parts solve unique problems by allowing you to create exactly what you need to get the job done. In this video, I explore three designs I made that all make my telescope perform better than before. I was able to think of a solution, design it in CAD, and bring it to life in just minutes to hours.
    Here are some of the designs, I will be reworking the dew shield before uploading it.

    Cool, that's my cable router! Very nice modifications. With the original design I left the outer diameter a little small to incorporate a nichrome wire dew heater on the outside. I really like the additional channel around the outside that spits the cable out the top, wish I had thought of that. PETG is definitely the way to go, especially for the delicate thin wall cable channels. I've printed dew shields for all my telescopes, instead of trying to nail down an exact fit and dealing with printing tolerance I usually just print it 1mm larger then use adhesive backed felt to tune up the fit.

      Thank you so much!! Love your original design. I was struggling to come up with one and then I found yours which began the rabbit hole which is this video 😅

    Nice job Cole, Yes make it tall enough to be able to put on a cover without having to remove the camera and cables. Come down this winter and do some imaging from a dark sky.

    • @ColeRees
      @ColeRees  Před 7 měsíci

      I’ve designed a cap that is about 4” tall and will cover the entire front end and window when not imaging. It has about 6 hours to go on the print and then I will fit it on

    It is all cool and useful I know and I respect that. However one thing I will not understand is to have obstructions and newtonian like images with a difraction spikes. with all the stuff added infront I belive you can achive sharper images with newtonian telescope and reducer/corrector. sharper images with f3 instead of f4 and you are not losing automation option with filter wheel. Iunderstand useage case here. However secrificing a lot for one stop light gathering even that is some argument with all the obstraction infront of the telescope. Maybe I am missing something here. I can be wrong about this just throwing my opinion.

    You should really design that window to be like circular or peaked at the top so it doesn't need supports. There's really no reason to make it square and removing the sharrp corners will also make it less fragile.

    • @ColeRees
      @ColeRees  Před 7 měsíci

      I tried a version with filleted corners on the filter window and didn’t like it as much. I have pretty big hands, though. Layer adhesion and strength are super strong on this part (high print temps)

    • @samk2407
      @samk2407 Před 7 měsíci

      @@ColeRees there are better ways to do it than just filleting the square. But if it works it works

    Any updates on the dew shield and cap files? I just got a Hyperstar for my CPC 800 and I love the idea of the cable router and dew shield window. Are you finding any light issues having the window with the dew shield?

    • @ColeRees
      @ColeRees  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I ended up going back to my usual dew shield before the 3-D printed one. I found that it was using more filament than i wanted per prototype, and i dropped the cap once and it broke so I didn’t bother re-printing. If i do go back and fix it, I will upload the files. I just didnt want to upload low-quality files for other people to print if I knew they weren’t going to work very well.

      @@ColeRees are you willing to share the CAD files of the few shield and cap? Some of us have more filament than we know what to do with right now. LOL I might be able to figure something out that can work for me. I find prototyping fun.

    You do good work, but you also do a good bit of waste. PLA may be "natural" but if not composted properly it is no different than any other plastic in the environment. About the only thing I could pick on. I am sure you put a mat black finish on them later at some point.

    • @ColeRees
      @ColeRees  Před měsícem

      Thats true! Luckily i live very close to a recycling center that allows for sorted plastics, and has disposal for PLA. If it’s just small bits they tend to go in the garbage but i save the big junk parts and bring them to be recycled.

    Hi Cole! I have both a RASA 8 and an Edge Hd C8 with hyper star and was wondering if you would make the cable router ring for me. I’m a disabled law enforcement officer and don’t have access to anyone with a 3D printer. I am in New York and would gladly pay you for your service if you are interested. Please let me know how I can send you an email if by phone call. Thank you.

    looks interesting but your audio is very uneven and is constantly changing volume, very annoying! Seriously, bad audio can kill a channel fast.

    • @jeroexx
      @jeroexx Před 7 měsíci

      It's not at all bad. Sure it's uneven sometimes but I wouldn't call that "bad audio". With that audio I wouldn't mind watching his videos. If it were like onesided or unclear that would be something different.
      Great job keep on going like this ;)
