soon as the beads begin to seat, but before it fully 'pops'.. release the strap! That strap could break, and whip around..with authority~~ that metal ratchet was aimed right at your family jewels. But yeah, the strap method usually works. On brand new tires that have been laying around/shipped smashed down, and are about 3-4 inches too narrow, cut some blocks of wood to spread it back apart.. as far as you can spread it... say overnight, will buy you a few minutes of 'spread beads' before it gets too narrow again.
I suggest you "stitch" the 2 ratchet strap hooks together with a lose rope or cam-buckle strap. Then, if the tight ratchet strap breaks, the lose rope/strap keeps it together.

Ratchet strap did not work on brand new 14" tyre. Since water will cause rust inside the rim it is good idia to apply tire lubricant.
