The biggest 80s reference is probably that Max, even though he's credited as Paul Mall, is actually Paul Reubens, aka Pee-wee Herman himself.

There is another SciFi from the 80s I loved as a kid called "inner space". Don't think I've seen it since then so I don't know if it holds up, but I have fond memories of it.
It holds up - Joe Dante movies usually do.
Innerspace is an AWESOME movie. It's just one of those that you'll remember for reasons not to be spoiled here.

I just rewatched it recently. it definitely holds up. if you get a chance, give it a fresh watch. there are probably things you missed as a kid that you'll pick up now.

I think I saw Flight of the Navigator and Space Camp in the 1980's and I haven't really thought about either movie since then. That is, except for the fact that there was a real space camp at Huntsville or something.

I had a classmate and a teacher who had bit parts in Space Camp. Kate Capshaw as a girl in the beginning, and also one of the technicians who says "Hey Jinx! Where the hell is that ratchet?"

Cool fact: They couldn't do the stairs animation in CG so it was actually stop-motion animation.

The movie that teams well with this one is "Explorers". 1985 young teen(s) get psychic dream messages on how to build a spaceship to meet-up with some aliens.
Such an underrated film. It kind of answers the question "What if Elliot had gone with ET?"
A few weeks ago, I asked my nephews if they had seen this movie and they replied in unison "Compliance." I never felt prouder to be an uncle.
The kids are alright.
R.I.P. Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) (1952-2023) I watched this film every time it was on the Disney channel in the late 80s to mid 90s
...... Wtf.... Paul died!?!? How the frell did I miss that!!?!??? 😢 He was such a huge part of my childhood. I hated what he did, but he was such a great comedian. To me, he was as great as Mr. Rodgers... Even knowing the rumors of why Fred had to do the show as community service..... Which I think was disproved...
Still loved as much as LeVar Burton, Bob Barker, Bob Ross, Kermit, and Elmo. No longer Cosby.

This is legitimately one of my favorite movies! It's not a technical masterpiece, but it's *so* fun and well told.
Go watch the Captain Disillusion video about this film and then come back and tell us it's not a technical masterpiece.

The Captain Disillusion doc is very good. Highly recommended.
He breaks it all down and is was indeed a technical masterpiece. I think it doesn't seem that way because of how good it actually was. At the time, people not in the industry but in the know, were impressed. The VFX wizards on that film used every trick in the book and innovated a few of their own to achieve those results.
I was thoroughly amazed to learn about it all.
You shan't be disappointed.

Being born in the mid 80's', this movie was my childhood! My dad recorded it on a VHS tape from the Disney Channel and I damn near wore the tape out. Thank you for reacting to it!
Same, my parents had recorded all the classics….Goonies, Labyrinth, Legend, Willow, Explorers, etc. remember watching those tapes over and over.
In the book, the story ends on David's first day of the new school year where he meets a new girl in his class. Her name is Carolyn McAdams. They would eventually get married.
At the end of the film, some other parents say, "come along, Carolyn!"

The actor that played Dr. Faraday, Howard Hessman, is better known as Doctor Johnny Fever in the TV show WKRP.

This was a childhood staple along with Explorers. Another great 80's kid adventure movie.
"Ladies and gentlemen: Alan Silvestri and his Synclavier!" What an absolute bop of a soundtrack 😍
Makes one want to have a period correct stereo with the glass front.
Each speaker the same size as the component cabinet.
Drop the needle on the freshly brushed LP, or pop in the CD if you were ballin'.
Sit on the couch centered between the speakers and let it hang the entire album.
Jen skipped the end credits scene which I totally understand, but the ending to this movie is 1 best ever! With the gyrosphere shots in the sky and Alan silvestri soundtrack is awesome.

They came to prominence in the early 1980s, releasing four UK top-20 singles: "Living on the Ceiling", "Waves", "Blind Vision" and "Don't Tell Me".
A favorite from my childhood. We even watched this in elementary school back in the 80s. The 80s was a great decade for kid adventure movies. Not just "The Goonies", but movies this, "D.A.R.Y.L." "Cloak and Dagger", and "Explorers" had a more serious tone to them. People actually got killed in some of those movies. I recommend all of them.
Loved this movie as an 80s kid, still love the music. David leaving his family to take his chances to go back in time still chokes me up.

The actor who played David robbed a bank about 8 years ago. There's a documentary 'After the Navigator' (2020) about the movie and his life

@@jasonseipler2665 He's much better. He went to inpatient rehab and therapy and has even started taking acting classes. He's been hitting the convention circuit with his co-stars and has been doing really well.

I always loved this movie, though as an adult, the first half involving David returning to his family, only to find that eight years have passed, and he's the exact same age, much to his understandable confusion, to be stronger than the second half. But then again, flying in a spaceship would appeal more to kids than the sci Fi thriller aspect.
Imagine how much more mature that David would be after he pops back to his family in the end of the movie.
As a kid, the movie only really begins when David arrives at NASA.
His character was very natural. He must have had a great time during the movie, you can see it in his smile and laughter.

I had this on VHS and no joke I used to watch this movie weekly. This movie probably still holds my record for the most watched movie in my lifetime.
You have to use scotch tape to repair your most watched tapes as a kid or it doesnt count.
Same, this, A Goofy Movie and Terminator 2. I watched all of them until the tapes wore out and couldn't be watched any more.

I thought Brave Little Toaster got something absurd like 13 sequels? Only ever saw the first one myself though. I just seem to remember it getting almost as much sequel overload as Land Before Time did. Only ever saw the first one of that as well. But I think it got something insane like 15 sequels.
@@MuljoStpho No. Brave Little Toaster on got two sequels. "Goes to Mars" and "To The Rescue" Obviously neither as good as the original.
This, Short Circuit, and The Explorers all had a similar vibe. I liked them all when I was a kid.
I'd forgotten that Sarah Jessica Parker was in this movie. She was also in "Footloose" and "Girls just Wanna have Fun", which I also recommend checking out.
Some how I had mixed up in my head that the SJP scene with the robot was from D.A.R.Y.L. I guess they were similar style movies of the day.
I think this is the only movie I liked her in. But I was around 5 when I first saw it.
She did her parts in the film just for a paycheck. She refuses to acknowledge fans of the film if she is asked and has been filmed on Entertainment Tonight that she clearly does not remember what the movie was about.
This absolutely blew every kid away back when it was first released. It was definitely one of the very first movies to use CGI.
I feel like a kid again every time I watch one of her videos.
I remember the effects in this looked good in the 80's and its a nice kids movie. The cgi holds up well, shiny chrome sells the effect convincingly. As others have said more good 80's movies. Innerspace, Batteries not included, Short Circuit and Explorers.

When I watch movies with you I sometimes wonder to myself "Why couldn't I have met a nice cute geek like her back in the day?". Then when you said "I don't know what Rice-A-Roni is" I get snapped back into reality and realize we would never work out...

"Race to witch mountain". I'm 74 and "Flight of The Navigator" is in my collection, yes a great movie and a great reaction thanks Jen.
I was born in 1980. I have spent my entire life quoting this movie.
My parents took me to see this in the theatre when it came out. I was 9. Added fuel to the fire of my growing love for sci-fi. Thanks for the memories. I have been a cinephile since birth 😉
My favorite part of this movie growing up was that David is from Ft. Lauderdale FL which is where I grew up.
They should do a sequel to this set 8 years in the future where David is grown up & the young version of him suddenly knocks in his door
it's be even weirder if in that movie he was an old man looking out his old room just waiting for his younger self to show up
"welcome home David", and knowing the future in what he could do, that he might travel back too far as one of the paths to take
The Dad, played by Cliff De Young, played Brad Majors in Shock Treatment the "sequel" to Rocky Horror
I watched this when I was young, and I got caught up in it. There were no hidden messages here, just a movie that you felt comfortable watching, and made you feel happy. I liked revisiting this with you, thanks.

Nothing is more surreal than going to a vacation in Florida and rolling up to NASA at Cape Canaveral listening to the soundtrack of this movie.

Veronica Cartwright who portrays the mom (Helen Freeman) in this movie also portrayed Cathy Brenner in Hitchcock’s The Birds. She was also in Alien as Lambert, the Nostromo's navigator. It’s nice to see her in this movie.
She's also the mother in scary movie 2. the exorcist segment
Her sister Angela was Penny Robinson on LOST IN SPACE tv show.

Being a sci fi fan I loved this picture for the ship, it morphed in so many ways. great movie. I watched it on Cinemax many times.
Saw this movie with my dad when it made its way to the dollar theaters in the 80s. This and The Boy Who Could Fly and The Last Starfighter were some of my favorite movies at the time.

I was 11 when this came out! Our family decided to move to Vancouver Island from Ontario! Me, my mom and my sis! We drove there like 3,000 kms and mom made me navigator! A great memory and a great movie! Miss the 80's!

I was 9 when this came out and I was in such awe.
Back when we could stay out late, play on the railroad tracks, hike down the cable line easement for miles, build tree forts and underground forts. We built a raft and shoved off down river, until it sank a dozen yards into the trip - Good Times.

A fun, sweet movie. Just sit back and enjoy! And as I thought about it, the voice of Max was excellent, acting as a friend, teacher, and protector. You could hear it in his delivery. RIP Pee-Wee Herman!

Brilliant Jen❤️I was just 9 when this was 1st released and I still remember it like yesterday, I was completely captivated by it, I was a similar age to the main character and of course this was absolutely going to happen to me too😂😂👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I've suggested this to a few reactors but I think this is the first actual reaction. Pioneering CGI (before T2) and referenced at the end of Galaxy Quest where they use the fireworks.
The story behind the CGI (and the non-CGI effects that look CGIish) is pretty interesting too.
A fun kids move is Adventures in Babysitting starring Elizabeth Shue.

I was 10 when I saw this in the cinema and it blew my tiny mind! I remember trying to draw pictures of the ship from memory afterwards as it was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen and i was obsessed... this was when you had to wait for what seemed like a year after a film's release for it to come out on video.
This is one of my favorite films from the 80s. And I love how the movie tricks the viewer twice at the beginning, first with the silver frisbee disk and then with the airship. Both times you think is that the UFO? And then a short time later a third time with the water tower.
RIP Paul Reubens - voice of Max. My most favourite scene is of course with the song I get around. Great kids movie, but I saw as an adult...and I felt like little kid again.
