  • Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) affect an estimated 15 million Americans. If you have dysphagia or are helping someone to improve their swallow and ability to eat and drink safely, this video is for you. In this week's video I expand on last week's topic. I briefly explain 3 exercises and 3 positioning techniques to assist someone in swallowing safely.

    My anxiety was keeping me from swallowing and one thing that helped me was looking in the mirror while eating so you can see your throat move and know that you swallowed it

    Hello. I was diagnosed with Pharyngeal dysphagia due to a brain injury, but this swallowing problem it's getting worse the last few months, some days it's so hard to swallow and others I don't have any problems, recently I have the sensation that food its stock in my throat, I try to swallow very hard and drink a lot of water sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, the sensation can last 1- 2 days and suddenly disappeared, I've noticed white bumps in my throat and doing research on internet i've been able to remove them. I'm impress of what the body can adapt to every circumstance, my point here it's that I have never watched a video of swallowing exercises because it doesn't affect me every day (but when does it's so bad, worse days ) and my body did every exercise you explain here specially the last one! It's it very hard living like this. Thank you for your videos!!

    The ENT's I consulted with didn't recommend any type of treatment or personal therapy. The only advise I got was chew food well, drink a lot of liquid with each bite, and eat my meals absorbed in no other external stimulus (watching TV and eating....ect) I'll whole heartedly perform exercises multiple times daily. It would be nice to feel like I'm not chocking after eating and running out of breath when swallowing liquid.

      @@devilsKrEEd thank you so much for asking, you are so kind. 💕 I was finally approved for Medicare / disability, so I did get to go to speech therapy, and the best trick my speech therapist taught me was the same as number one that she has taught us here, the chin tuck! That helps me to swallow my saliva properly without is going into my lungs! although overall speech therapy did not work to get rid of my tube because apparently the little flappy thing in my throat that is controlled and connected to my brain, isd unable to be fixed to work so that I wouldn't aspirate if I eat or drink. So I am so on my feeding tube, but that is okay because I consider myself so very blessed. I did relearn how to walk and talk and write, which many people that have the type of brain lesion I have, are not so lucky. 1/3 die immediately, 1/3 get stuck in what is called locked in syndrome where they can only move their eyes for the rest of their life even though they are very alert and know what's going on, and the last third get a little bit better and accept their new normal, that's me! For that I am forever grateful and I am so thankful to be so blessed. So all in all I am doing fantastic! Thank you so much for asking my friend. I hope this makes sense sometimes it's hard with my words. I apologize if it doesn't. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend and I wish you peace joy and love! 💖

    I am a Speech-Language Pathologist who has been actively practicing in the field of dysphagia for many years. It is not recommended that these exercises be performed unless they have been prescribed by a Speech-Language Pathologist following an objective swallow assessment via a Modified Barium Swallow or a Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow. For some people, they can make the swallowing mechanism worse and actually increase the risk of obstruction / aspiration. This video is a lovely visual aid to help people who have been prescribed these exercises / manoeuvres, but it should be made clear that people should not perform them unless instructed to do so by a qualified professional.

    I don't know if I struggle with the actual act of swallowing (that much) but swallowing food is hard, I made 3 scrabbled eggs the other day and it took me over an hour to eat them all. My mate did it in 5 min. I have to make the chunks so small in my mouth and chew them for like 2min (even though they're already scrambled) and cover it in saliva, just to swallow. It's crazy.

I've always had this problem since I was little because I have a phobia of choking I would freak out so badly if I was constantly thinking about swallowing saliva and then not being able to. Thing is the chin tuck tactic contradicts the 90 degrees advice, because when you swallow you're bending your head forward anyway. You're upright but you're not keeping your head up straight doing the chin tuck you're hunching because I swallow similarly right now like that since I'm struggling with dysphagia(they're not sure if it's due to anxiety and acid reflux but that's what the ENT suspects) I have to go for a barrium swallow so hopefully that'll help tell more. I'm guessing you're a speech pathologist. I went to one for a basic swallow assessment she was supposed to give me a barrium swallow but didn't....she just watched me eat crackers, drink a little water and a few bites of apple sauce. She botched it, because my ENT wanted her to do the test but for whatever reason she didn't and said he just pulled the trigger too quickly for that test. So i'm having it done somewhere else since I saw him again the other day. He wasn't pleased. She just said go to a gastrologist and that it's anxiety making me hesitate, think too much before I swallow because I do that sometimes but other times it feels like something is in my throat or a slight burning sensation, dry feeling etc I've had bad anxiety for 13 years never had it affect my swallowing until now so I don't believe that's the only cause. But the ENT said let's wait to see what the test results are first once I go before seeing a gastrologist for acid reflux and to take pepcid complete for now since my insurance doesn't take prescribed meds.

      @SierraSpeech  Před 6 lety +1

      There is some research to support the use of kinesio taping for swallow function. You can use the tape to support muscles that need assistance and to relax muscles that are tense. For instance, it can aid in the lift of the hyoid bone for the swallow. This is a great question! I would contact your local speech therapist and ask them to look into this for you, so they can show you how it works.

    Hi there, I have dysphagia due to an esophageal stricture and acid reflux. I'm mainly on a liquid diet with certain soft foods like yogurt and ice cream. I went several months without eating (only liquids) before I found a doctor that correctly diagnosed my problem. I'm being treated for it now they have to gradually dialate me once a month since my stricture was severe and closer to the top of my esophagus. I'm having a problem learning how to eat and swallow properly because it's been so long since I've eaten solid food. Its been a really difficult journey, I feel like I've completely forgotten how to swallow. Anytime I try to eat anything I feel like it's getting stuck. My question is how often do you suggest I do these exercises? I'd really appreciate your opinion 🙂
    Thanks and God bless❤

      @@justiceforasifa9730 I'm so sorry to hear that. I know how difficult and scary it is to not be able to eat normally. I've been experiencing this for a year and a half now. My main problem was that it took me several months to find a doctor that correctly diagnosed my problem. It turns out I have an esophageal stricture, which means that a part of my esophagus becomes so narrow that it's hard to pass any food through, it also makes it very difficult to swallow. Because of that I've been on a liquid diet. It is very important to get your father to a doctor so that they can diagnose and treat him. Not eating for long periods of time is very serious. I ended up in the emergency room from dehydration and complications from malnutrition. My thoughts and prayers are with you.Please update me and let me know how your father is doing.
