- Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) affect an estimated 15 million Americans. If you have dysphagia or are helping someone to improve their swallow and ability to eat and drink safely, this video is for you. In this week's video I expand on last week's topic. I briefly explain 3 exercises and 3 positioning techniques to assist someone in swallowing safely.

My anxiety was keeping me from swallowing and one thing that helped me was looking in the mirror while eating so you can see your throat move and know that you swallowed it
Joseph Wehby thank you for this!
Really? I'll try this.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. The tongue exercise helped tremendously & solved my problem. My problems stem from certain medications & stomach bugs with acid reflux. This is one less annoyance to worry about! God bless you!
This is so helpful, I have GERD. Through this video I’ve learned several useful pieces of information: stop taking my nighttime supplements while lying flat in bed, stop rushing while I’m eating and chew my food properly. She’s wonderful at describing the exercises. Will definitely do them.
hi i have gerd too .. could u share some tips on how to ease the swallowing difficulty that comes with it?
Take a food sensitivity test. Dr Gundry is very helpful on the subject of gerd
1 year later, I have a question. Do you still have difficulty swallowing?
I'm asking because I'm going through this myself and I'm worried I may never eat normally again.
Excellent explanation of the exercises, they are clear and easy to follow. I appreciate you taking the time to record this! Cheers.
this was calming, and very helpful, thank you.
I have just been diagnosed with this and needed these exercises. Thank you so much.
Hello. So what did you do to recover?
Thankyou so much!! I was at my wit's end with pain from swallowing after tongue surgery a week ago but after using a combination of all three postures you have shown I have just been able to eat my first decent amount of food without so much pain. Thankyou again from the U.K. 🙂
Great video. I'm a medical student and I got a question about the chin-tuck posture! Got it wrong. But now after searching it and watching this video, I know 5 extra things that can help with dysphagia! Thank you.
Thanks for this and your other videos! This information is very valuable and useful.
Thank you very much for your kindly direction of dysphagia treatment. Very helpful for me .
Difficulty of swallowing troubles eating. My throat heals, my heart as well. Many thanks, again.
All of them are extremely useful! Many thanks for sharing the tips!
Wow... Thank you so much.. The first tip worked perfectly for me.. I can actually feel air in my throat passing through and not having the feeling of it being blocked. It takes a few minutes overall but it is working for me!
I put my tong out and bite it with my teeth, holding that position whilst breathing in and out through my nose. The stuck food on my throat travelled down! You've made my life alot easier!
This is great. I really appreciate this video.
OMG, thank you so much...Ive had this thing for almost three years....these exercises help.God bless you

This is great I have a partial paralysis on the right vocal cord and often when waking up or sometimes throughout the day can tell the right side isn’t working and I don’t feel I can swallow. I appreciate the information
My dysphagia is two fold.
Stage IV unresectable head and neck cancer in the left tonsil in 2006~7.
I had a small stroke that has left my tongue and vocal chord on the left side paralyzed.
Recently I had my esophagus dilated and my left vocal chord injected to ease the load on the right side.
I will be trying these methods tomorrow morning, thank you for the information on hoping it works 😃
Jesus.. I'm so sorry to hear that. Every time you think you have it bad there's always someone who has it worse. Hope something is helping you.

@@OldGriz708 hahah! Way to keep the positive attitude, man. I envy that. My GAD and dysthymia don't allow me to see the upside often lol. Did those methods work for you by the way?
@@OldGriz708 I too have dysphagia. Had tongue cancer in 98! Head and next radiation which saved my life and destroyed my saliva glands and burned up my Thyroid. Fast forward- I have since had all my teeth pulled, and have implants. My. jaw broke while biting on a chip. Worse pain I had ever felt. 3 jaw surgeries later, (2 got infected) I can't swallow much either. I have had a feeding tube off and on 3 times (mostly on). Latest was place yesterday. I went a year trying to eat and but couldn't maintain my weight without the tube. So anyone having swallowing issues, I feel ya. It's not a good feeling not being able to run through the drive thru and grab a burger. But those days are gone, unless Divine intervention and I praying for complete healing- for all of us.

My mom had a ruptured brain aneurism in October and went to rehab and was on a minced and moist diet . After a shunt adjustment she’s failed every swallow evaluation since she’s had 3. Id like to help her and I’m so incredibly sad because she cries for water and it breaks my heart . I need to get her back .

I almost choked tonight. I am very scared. As I was scared to eat and drink, I now notice, my swallowing is very dangerous. So I litteraly just find out I have this disorder. I am scared to eat and drink now and even to swallow my own spit. I have not slept all night and i am gonna call the doctor as soon as they open. This video helps me now though, as i try to swallow while looking down. I am litteraly so scared now, i almost choked earlier tonight in a piece of crisps, not being able to breath for a couple of seconds. I am in panic the whole time since i have to swallow my spit. I am very scared.
Are you all right now??
Chew alot and eat slow from now on
Thats exactly me too.
Its so aggravating..Sometimes the thought alone triggers it..I cant enjoy food the way I use too..
Are you better now? I choked on some food a couple of weeks ago and ever since noticed here and there it's like I would hesitate to swallow sending my food and drink back up. Now the last five days I've barely ate, I'm lucky if I can get yogurt down it's so bad and liquids. Im scared to death worrying will I ever eat again. Im scared I'll choke on just drinking water or eating yogurt. I'm so upset about the whole thing. I'm waiting for a referral to get a barium so my doctor can check and make sure nothing is going on

Thank u sir ! It helps me.to teach my mum how to swallow , she has orapharyngeal dysphagia stroke !
Hello. I was diagnosed with Pharyngeal dysphagia due to a brain injury, but this swallowing problem it's getting worse the last few months, some days it's so hard to swallow and others I don't have any problems, recently I have the sensation that food its stock in my throat, I try to swallow very hard and drink a lot of water sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, the sensation can last 1- 2 days and suddenly disappeared, I've noticed white bumps in my throat and doing research on internet i've been able to remove them. I'm impress of what the body can adapt to every circumstance, my point here it's that I have never watched a video of swallowing exercises because it doesn't affect me every day (but when does it's so bad, worse days ) and my body did every exercise you explain here specially the last one! It's it very hard living like this. Thank you for your videos!!
Thank you, I have a form of Muscular Dystrophy called Myotonic Dystrophy. There are several ways this effects people but swallowing is one. I will try this. :)
THANK YOU!!! I had the ACDF surgical procedure over a year ago. I have some serious issuesafterwards with Dysphagia and Aspiration and dry heave on food\pills daily. I fear that aspiration pneumonia is upcoming if I don't do something!
The ENT's I consulted with didn't recommend any type of treatment or personal therapy. The only advise I got was chew food well, drink a lot of liquid with each bite, and eat my meals absorbed in no other external stimulus (watching TV and eating....ect) I'll whole heartedly perform exercises multiple times daily. It would be nice to feel like I'm not chocking after eating and running out of breath when swallowing liquid.
Did you find it worked
Thank you so much for this! I have a brain lesion on the pons, and I had a feeding tube placed on December 12th and I cannot afford speech therapy yet, this is so helpful!💜
Hows progress?
@@devilsKrEEd thank you so much for asking, you are so kind. 💕 I was finally approved for Medicare / disability, so I did get to go to speech therapy, and the best trick my speech therapist taught me was the same as number one that she has taught us here, the chin tuck! That helps me to swallow my saliva properly without is going into my lungs! although overall speech therapy did not work to get rid of my tube because apparently the little flappy thing in my throat that is controlled and connected to my brain, isd unable to be fixed to work so that I wouldn't aspirate if I eat or drink. So I am so on my feeding tube, but that is okay because I consider myself so very blessed. I did relearn how to walk and talk and write, which many people that have the type of brain lesion I have, are not so lucky. 1/3 die immediately, 1/3 get stuck in what is called locked in syndrome where they can only move their eyes for the rest of their life even though they are very alert and know what's going on, and the last third get a little bit better and accept their new normal, that's me! For that I am forever grateful and I am so thankful to be so blessed. So all in all I am doing fantastic! Thank you so much for asking my friend. I hope this makes sense sometimes it's hard with my words. I apologize if it doesn't. I hope you are having a wonderful weekend and I wish you peace joy and love! 💖

It’s really scary and have never experienced this before. I hope your page helps me and points me in the right direction as this is creating such anxiety for me.
I’m experiencing the same thing
@@itstiffany485 I received many tests and a cat scan showed a lymph node behind the tongue near the epiglottis was swollen. I got a steroid shot and a steroid pack. It took about 5 days to work but it did finally swell down and I was able to swallow normal again. I really hope this helps you. Try not so panic and just keep water close for sips to swallow. I did also see an ent after Covid passed and never found out the true cause but could’ve been Covid that caused the swelling since it’s upper respiratory.
@@itstiffany485 I’m very sorry to hear you’re experiencing this. I had a terrible time in the hospital as they said it was my anxiety. They were very wrong and in denial I had this. My doctor saw my cat scan and chose the steroid pack. Ent did say this can happen so if you can get to one or a primary they can help. Be aware steroids can make anxiety escalate as well. I do hope this helps as my experience was very scary.
Thank you so much.
Thanks for all the tips and exercises. I find myself occasionally aspirating when drinking water when I first get up in the morning, then I feel the water in my lungs the rest of the day and trying to cough it up... unsuccessfully.

This is a great video. Thank you! How after should these exercises be done? And how long until we see results? Thank you so much!
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist who has been actively practicing in the field of dysphagia for many years. It is not recommended that these exercises be performed unless they have been prescribed by a Speech-Language Pathologist following an objective swallow assessment via a Modified Barium Swallow or a Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of the Swallow. For some people, they can make the swallowing mechanism worse and actually increase the risk of obstruction / aspiration. This video is a lovely visual aid to help people who have been prescribed these exercises / manoeuvres, but it should be made clear that people should not perform them unless instructed to do so by a qualified professional.

Upright posture is great and I imagine that it would work best when back support is given by a chair or repositioned bed. Simply sitting on the side of a bed with someone with coordination problems could give an eater unnecessary things to think about.
What is an example of a recommended frequency and number of repetitions for engaging these exercises?
My predicament of the aforementioned is extremely painful, too. I am forced to try and backwash, or "throw up" to dislodge the food. I am often tearing my throat up from attempting to swallow and blood accompanies my backwash

I don't know if I struggle with the actual act of swallowing (that much) but swallowing food is hard, I made 3 scrabbled eggs the other day and it took me over an hour to eat them all. My mate did it in 5 min. I have to make the chunks so small in my mouth and chew them for like 2min (even though they're already scrambled) and cover it in saliva, just to swallow. It's crazy.

dhfhfgcdchg same I'm 14 and I have a hard time swallowing pills I recently kinda choked on a pill it felt like it was stuck in my throat and I hated that feeling, now I have a really hard time swallowing food because I don't want to choke or I don't like the sensation of having something stuck on your throat. @@Kavvannah hey it was actually just my anxiety and ive gotten better but i still can't swallow pills tho.
Thing is the chin tuck tactic contradicts the 90 degrees advice, because when you swallow you're bending your head forward anyway. You're upright but you're not keeping your head up straight doing the chin tuck you're hunching because I swallow similarly right now like that since I'm struggling with dysphagia(they're not sure if it's due to anxiety and acid reflux but that's what the ENT suspects) I have to go for a barrium swallow so hopefully that'll help tell more. I'm guessing you're a speech pathologist. I went to one for a basic swallow assessment she was supposed to give me a barrium swallow but didn't....she just watched me eat crackers, drink a little water and a few bites of apple sauce. She botched it, because my ENT wanted her to do the test but for whatever reason she didn't and said he just pulled the trigger too quickly for that test. So i'm having it done somewhere else since I saw him again the other day. He wasn't pleased. She just said go to a gastrologist and that it's anxiety making me hesitate, think too much before I swallow because I do that sometimes but other times it feels like something is in my throat or a slight burning sensation, dry feeling etc I've had bad anxiety for 13 years never had it affect my swallowing until now so I don't believe that's the only cause. But the ENT said let's wait to see what the test results are first once I go before seeing a gastrologist for acid reflux and to take pepcid complete for now since my insurance doesn't take prescribed meds.

Hello Doris
How are you doing Today?
I have a hard time swallowing liquids due to M S. I had little problem with food until recently when I got false teeth and now I'm have real trouble and can not swallow anything with teeth in so I have to eat lots of soft food with no teeth. I feel the muscles tiring so I have to rest. I am hoping your exercises help.. Thank you posting the video.
Hello Barbara
How are you doing today?
Is there any effect of kinesio tape on someone with swallowing disorder?
if you know any taping technique? Can you help me?
the meantime thanks for the video
There is some research to support the use of kinesio taping for swallow function. You can use the tape to support muscles that need assistance and to relax muscles that are tense. For instance, it can aid in the lift of the hyoid bone for the swallow. This is a great question! I would contact your local speech therapist and ask them to look into this for you, so they can show you how it works.

Hi. Chin tuck we do with food or without food
I always have my head tilted down and to the left. In the mornings I have really bad anxiety I get really hot, heart racing, tons of clear stuff that run down my nose but gets stuffed up, feels like it goes down my throat so I try to swallow and it's difficult then I freak out more. If I turn my head down and to the left it seems that let's me swallow easier but it's weird and uncomfortable.
Hi there, I have dysphagia due to an esophageal stricture and acid reflux. I'm mainly on a liquid diet with certain soft foods like yogurt and ice cream. I went several months without eating (only liquids) before I found a doctor that correctly diagnosed my problem. I'm being treated for it now they have to gradually dialate me once a month since my stricture was severe and closer to the top of my esophagus. I'm having a problem learning how to eat and swallow properly because it's been so long since I've eaten solid food. Its been a really difficult journey, I feel like I've completely forgotten how to swallow. Anytime I try to eat anything I feel like it's getting stuck. My question is how often do you suggest I do these exercises? I'd really appreciate your opinion 🙂
Thanks and God bless❤
Dear sis, my father has same problem from past 1 month. I'm very depressed. He doesn't want to go to doc fearing about something. Can you please tell me how long you've been going through this?
@@justiceforasifa9730 I'm so sorry to hear that. I know how difficult and scary it is to not be able to eat normally. I've been experiencing this for a year and a half now. My main problem was that it took me several months to find a doctor that correctly diagnosed my problem. It turns out I have an esophageal stricture, which means that a part of my esophagus becomes so narrow that it's hard to pass any food through, it also makes it very difficult to swallow. Because of that I've been on a liquid diet. It is very important to get your father to a doctor so that they can diagnose and treat him. Not eating for long periods of time is very serious. I ended up in the emergency room from dehydration and complications from malnutrition. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please update me and let me know how your father is doing.
