I was privileged to play trombone in the backup orchestra with Vikki several times in the late '70s in Nevada showrooms. I was thunderstruck, and admit to having a huge crush in her! When she ended her show with "My Way", turned to face the band while gathering herself, and we reprised the song for her bows, she was crying, every show. I had to concentrate on my task or risk losing it, no joke. No one ever sold a song with every ounce of her soul like Vikki. And her singing matured from her early years - this was filmed in her prime, which lasted a long time. Her pitch, phrasing, dynamics, and diction are superb. I've wondered who her vocal coach was. This medley of two great Bacharach songs (another artist I was privileged to play with) is a triumph on several levels - Vikki's stunning performance, the great musical arrangement, the band's performance, and the difficult technical work required for Vikki to sing live with the previously recorded portion - all on live TV! It's a shame Vikki's many performances on Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show" (he also had a crush on her, and she even hosted the show in his absence several times) have been taken down from this site due to copyright issues. I love you Vikki, thank you for my fond memories.
I cannot thank you enough for telling of your experience with Vikki!!! I loved hearing your insights. I remember attending some of Vikki’s performances and always left her show’s loving her more. She certainly holds special places in my memories too!!
What a wonderful comment to read, I've seen her live a number of times and she always left me wanting more. I've seen the tears more than a few times. She really sings (to this day) from the heart. I've been fortunate enough to have compiled one of the most complete collections of her music probably anywhere. Thanks for sharing your memories. Wish I could have been there to hear what you did.
Wow, this is one of the greatest performances of Bacharach's many classic songs - "Make It Easy On Yourself" doesn't get the airplay it deserves. Vikki Carr sings it with such palpable emotion, soaring passion ending in tragic sadness. She makes you cry towards the end when she utters: "cause breaking up...is so very hard...to...do" 😥
I LOVE HER MUSIC!!! I'm so thankful I kept her record albums from the 70s...her voice is soothing and she us so beautiful...I have a favorite that she did...It is I KEEP IT HID!! Along with IT MUST BE HIM...Wish I could of seen her sing in person...it's time to go and listen to my album of hers.....
Who can perform two songs in a full medley and in a duet performance on her own. None other than the brilliant Vikki Carr. These incredible songs were not easy songs to do, but only Vikki can perform in stellar ways in wonder.
I have two favorite female singers-Marilyn McCoo of the Fifth Dimension and the incomparable Vikki Carr. Both of these ladies have Incredible voices! I love Vikki’s Spanish songs. Marilyn and Vikki put so much emotion in their songs.
The rendition of this Burt Bacharach song is magnificent.....Vikki has it all with the perfect voice, phrasing and facial expressions that enhance it all. She is also one beautiful gal!
Hard to believe all that's packed into this ama,ing performance. Truly one of the greatest voices and performers ever. Nothing since that comes close. Another truly great performance that many may mock in our culture of mean twisted thinking is her doing Sunday morning coming down on johnny cash show. Also great to hear her explain her innocent side of being pursued by president gerald ford on our tax money. She's awesome.
Back in 1969 I saw the Broadway play called Promises, Promises and that is where the song "Knowing When to Leave" came from. She sings it a little different, but it's a great tear jerker for the 19 year old I was at the time!
Wouldn't it be fantastic if this special was released on DVD. I remember seeing this when it originally aired in 1973. Never forgot it and was ecstatic when I saw this again.
Good one. On a chilly snowy winter Sunday morn, this few minutes has moved more than any recent feature film. Levitating performance. The '73 feel and set adds to the impact.
A sentimental and moving rendition of these hits by a beautiful lady. THANK YOU for the memories your voice brings back to us. Thank you for being an inspiration and a role model in more ways than you know. God bless you always.
Thank you Brian Adams for your wonderful comments re this superb singer and beautiful lady. I first fell in love with her as she sang on the Tom Jones tv show. She looked beautiful and what a voice. Saw her live in Las Vagas years later. I am still smitten.
Vikki Carr (Florencia Bisenta de Casillas-Martinez Cardona) was born on July 19, 1940 and therefore is celebrating her 80th birthday today July 19, 2020. She is an American vocalist who has had a singing career for more than four decades. Originally from El Paso, Texas, born to parents of Mexican ancestry, she has performed in a variety of musical genres, including pop, jazz and country, while her greatest success has come from singing in Spanish. A Texas-born singer who scored a bevy of pop hits in the 1960s, then became a Spanish-language superstar in the '80s.
Que bonita que tu es Florencia bisenta de castillias cardona, in other words : Miss Vikki Carr!!!! You are a celestial lady, unbelievably talented!!!! Such an astronomical voice, a super singing Star!!!! Every song, in your hands, becomes something out of this world!!!! God bless you my love!!!!
Que bueno que subieron este video nuevamente, esta canción no está en versión de estudio. Espero que algún día la traspasen, la interpretación aquí de Vikki es hermosa.
Wonderful!...she never got her just reward for her talent!..goes to show you that many folks simply don't know a talent when they hear one!.. I wonder what she's doing now days?..
+Salvatore Pedi I totally agree she was born in El Paso from Mexican parents and neither country USA or Mexico have given her the treatment and reward that such an artist deserves. She is beautiful classy elegant an angel.
@@commeunouragan True she's not regarded as one of the greats but LATIN AMERICA holds her in high regards for more than just one song, unlike the English speaking world who only knew her from "It Must Be Him". Thats precisely why she went to Spanish in the first place! She recorded a ton of albums in the 70s that went nowhere. CBS Mexico offered her a record deal in 1980 and eventually she scored big with "Ni Princesa Ni Esclava", then "Mala Suerte", then the now classic and often covered "Cosas Del Amor (with Ana Gabriel)"
True, she never received the recognition she richly deserved in the US, however she's still regarded as a Superstar in Latin America. She's slowed down a bit this past few years but she's definitely still performing to sold out shows and standing ovations. Love her still, she was and will always be the sound track to my life.
This is a wonderful ! This great interpretation was on you tube a year or two ago but was taken down for some reason ! As much as I like Scott Walker, in my opinion, nothing can equal this. Thank you for uploading this treasure.
I just finished watching a PBS special on Hal David. There was a Barbra Streisand mash-up that was done in the early 70's. It immediately made me think of this wonderful version by the very talented, underrated Vicki Carr!! Though I am a huge Streisand fan, for me, Vicki did it best.
Barbra Streisand did it first: on The Burt Bacharach Special in March of 1971, she sang ONE LESS BELL TO ANSWER/A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME with herself and it was exquisite. People have forever been copying things that Barbra did first, even Lily Tomlin with the kid in the huge chair (MY NAME IS BARBRA, 1965)... NOT that Vikki wasn't good, just not original...
This is a great version of the Bacharach/David song. There is another version by the English duo Shirley and Johnny from their 1970 album titled "This is Shirley and Johnny" released on Phillips. Worth a listen.
Bacharach/David songs are deceptively simple but they’re a fully quite difficult with the changing rhythms and what became their signature phrasing, requiring strong breath control to sing as written. Ms Warwick is a master at them as one should be if the songs are written for you. Of the hundreds of B/D cover and tribute albums, I consider one of the best is from Rumer, who performed for and with Me B s few yrs back. There are also a couple gems by Olivia N John and by Doris Day.

What a wonderful post. Thanks for sharing, Brian.
Very emotional, thanks for sharing this amazing memories. Regards from Brazil.
"No one ever sold a song with every ounce of her soul like Vikki."
EXCEPT maybe a gal named K A R E N C A R P E N T E R (Fixed it)
Her voice, her beauty. Certainly had a crush on her back in the 60's into the 70's.
hard to keep a dry eye when listening to Vikki sing sad songs. Few can deliver such honest heartfelt emotions in their singing

In 1976 in Iwakuni,Japan I purchased 5 of Miss carr's albums. Still some of my most treasured records. Still 2023 crushing on Miss Vikki.
I've always loved her. But these 2 songs beautifully sung. My lover left me after 7 years. It hurts. It's helping cope.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if this special was released on DVD. I remember seeing this when it originally aired in 1973. Never forgot it and was ecstatic when I saw this again.
Ohhhhh...Bacharach...one of the greats of the last half of the twentieth century, I really love his music...ohhhh man!

Looks, voice, and the ability to put emotion in the song. I'm headed to the downhill side of 72 and we'll remember her.
She is beautiful classy elegant an angel.

too bad younger generations have no clue of who vikki care was or how fabulous music can be. crap music today! so I go back to videos like this
Who is this guy cheating on Vikki with Other Vikki? He doesn't deserve either one of them!
