  • On 09-28-2020, Vermont Rail System GP40-2 # 307 leads the AAPRCO 2020 American Autumn Explorer, with eight historic rail cars, through the recently completed tunnel that goes under Middlebury, VT. The tunnel was part of joint project between the Town of Middlebury and the Vermont Rail System. The American Autumn Explorer was the first revenue passenger train through the tunnel.
    The train had a special engineer, the President of the Vermont Rail System.
    The train originated in Albany-Rensselaer, NY and traveled to North Bennington, VT. It spent the night in North Bennington and then traveled to Burlington, VT on 09-28-2020.
    This is the only special train to operate with Amtrak in 2020.
    The eight historic cars that made up the special train consist:
    NYC 3 - Portland
    Promontory Point
    Northern Dreams
    Northern Sky
    Dagny Taggart
    San Marino
    Wisconsin
    Chapel Hill
