  • drobo mini raid teardown - take apart - What's inside the drobo mini?
Drobo used to make pretty cool raid storage devices. I liked drobo and personally own the 12 drive, two 8 drive and this drobo mini (4 drive with mSATA cache). The company went out of business, but the devices are still out there. I had 4 extra 1TB SSD's so I revived my drobo mini today and decided to tear it down and see what makes it tick. Inside I found a cache battery I didn't know existed in the mini, as well as unused port connections in the rear, I presume some feature they didn't include. They look like possibly ethernet connections, but I didn't dig in to what IC's were on board to verify. I just wanted to see inside the thing. Once open its really a bad design inside, that is the "click in" toolless drive bays. I wasn't a fan of the standard power and SATA cables used in this high flex setup. I think they should have used silicone ribbon cables or something better than what they did. The latching mechanism for the drives was pretty weak as well. That said, the PC board, and electronics were well designed. The case fit together with minimal screws, looked nice too, reminds me of an iphone assembly. I will continue to use my drobo's until I can't repair them myself any longer. I hope you guys get some use out of this video! Thanks for watching!
Sorry, no audio, and my autofocus is a bit slow in spots..

I never expected to see a removable SODIMM inside this. Do you think it'd make any difference in any kind of performance if you increased the memory amount if it can actually accept more?
