  • Presenting you 2nd of the Milaap Trilogy films. Produced with much appreciated assistance from the Government of India Tourist Department, this film shows my first visit to my ancestral home in India after 10 years of search and 3 previous visits to India. We also visit Thakur Ranjit Singh's ancestral village in Rajasthan and attempt to search for several other girmitiyas ancestral home in India.
The final film in Milaap Trilogy-the Land of South Indian Girmitiyas will follow shortly.
    Dr Satish Rai
PS: We need your support to send these films to as many descendants of indentured Indians (Girmitiyas) in Fiji and globally as possible. Unfortunately TV channels in Fiji refused to screen these films for benefit of our community there.

Amazing history indeed. In India change of religion due social boundaries make bothers and sisters like the two banks of a river never to meet again. Yet the love to find roots can develop affection among the diaspora.
This is also happening in the neighbouring countries like Pak Bangladesh. Families who got separated in partition 47 are searching the near ones and relatiives till today.
It looks India is very very vast and we can find ourselves everywhere around the globe. Interesting thing.

Hardly any research has been done on the 1 million families in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar from girmityas were recruited, taken to Calcutta, and then transported to colonies for cheap labor. These families are from a relatively small area surrounding Azamgarh. The social, economic, and physiological effects of stealing these young men, women, and children on these families have not been researched and documented. The ongoing effects of these families, the village and this are (which I have called Girmit Nagar) has never been spoken about. This area remains among the poorest not only in UP and Bihar but in India as well. What correlation exists between the removal of these Indians from this area and the existing poverty remains to be explored.

The story of Indian punjabi Muslims is more painful. Their relatives in east Punjab migrated to Pakistan, thus their descend in Fiji and they parted forever. This documentary is on the Indians who were transported from India to Fiji between 1879 to 1917. They are known as the girmityas. If the person from Jalandhar migrated to Fiji in 1940, he is not a girmitya but migrated to Fiji as a free migrant. He had liberty to return to India whenever he wanted. I don't know why he did not return. But his story is very different from that of the girmityas.
