I think this is where netflix needs to stay. Short, concise, BEAUTIFULLY made shows. Their habit of starting a show and cancelling it immediately if it doesn't hit Stranger Things numbers isnt where it's at. This show was wonderful and I hope they make more wonderful things.

Generally I am warey of anything Netflix makes but this is one of my favourite series ever. I hate things that are written on the go for multiple seasons. A finite run allows space for the director to achieve something that has lasting impact.

Absolutely! I also loved how they handled themes like femininity, being black in the 60s, homosexuality etc in this show. Netflix often integrates these kinds of sociological themes with such a heavy hand in their shows to the point that it kind of breaks the 4th wall (for me at least). NOT in this one! Well crafted story and characters :)

That's something I love about shows and anime that are about sports or other games. They are able to convey how beautiful anything can be through the eyes of someone that loves that thing.
The first chess game is quite boring because is showing us how it looks like when you don't understand it nor care about it. And by the end it's as grand as Beth and the other competitors sees it.

@@ErebosGR While I do agreed that the first 3 where better in terms of both animation and storytelling, I don't quite understand the dislike To the Top! gets, in my books seasons 1 and 2 have a compelling story arc for Hinata, where he finally starts to get away of this childlike mentality of focusing in attack because its the coolest and actually starts proving his onw worth in connecting the ball, because even after the Fukurodani Training camp people would still judge Hinata mostly on his performance with Kageyama, and it all comes together in the match against Inarizaki when Hinata is finally able to properly receive and pay attention to other players and not just where the ball is, things that he did do before in the first 3 seasons but mostly happened by chance and pure instinct, in the To the Top he start to act more focus and intentionally than by pure reflex alone.

    • @ErebosGR
      @ErebosGR Před 3 lety +1

@@carlosroo5460 Yes, Hinata's arc is now more mature but I'd rather read the manga then instead of suffering through recycled animations and incompetently directed rallies and flashbacks.

Enjoyed the explanations about the transitions in the director’s toolkit over the 7 episodes. Great food for thought. The accelerated fast forward viewing of the different cinematic treatments - as captured and explained in this video - is also a really apt reflection of the evolution of the central character’s arc - from a closed inward private person to an object of public awe and admiration. But my favorite scene is the final one where she finds another version of her first ever mentor, but thousands of miles away, in a setting as outside and open as could be possibly contrasted to her first glimpse of the world of chess, in a tiny basement. Love it that she was also wearing a dress of stark white and black alone - as if the game and her world are now inseparable and finally reconciled in peace. Ironic... since the game is after all a game of war!

in her first game against Borgov in Mexico I thought it was really interesting how the use of flashback, memories, cut aways and the commentary manifested different parts of Beth thoughts at that time.
    - the voice over served as a kind of internal monologue
    - the picture of shaibel was her remembering a memory and a lesson from him to respect the game when its over and resign.
-flashback to the twins by the pool depicted her feelings about Borgov and his mechanical ways at that moment.
Again like you say all very inventive ways to illustrate Beths internal thoughts visually to create variety!

While I enjoyed the way that the kindof unsteady and ambiguous nature of time passing mirrored the feeling of addiction and being on a bender, it made it a bit hard to try to figure out whether the guys flirting with her were potential love interests or predators. I also liked the way it was fairly ambiguous as to whether the drugs ever did all that much to make her better.

      For the first short film:
      0, Watch short films
1, Try to avoid night scenes (at the beginning)
2, Sound is more important than the picture
3, Write the script for what you already have / have access to (location, people, gear)
3b, Do not write for your 20 years friend a 40+ role
4, One location, just a couple of people
      5, Feed the crew
6, Be nice on a set
7, Prepare for the actors/friends drop out (see 4#, less people less hustle)
8, Practice the compositions you are looking for before the shooting
9, Practice the sound recording you are looking for before the shooting
10, You can shoot it in 1-2 days
11, Be mindful with the close-ups (reaching for a glass, you do not have to show it(close-up), just he/she put it on her/his head)
      12, Look for feedback
14, Do not spend x100$ on film festivals with your first short
13, Fail, learn from it and move on to the next project.
