Can we bring this BIG V12 2 STROKE Detroit Diesel Dump Truck BACK to LIFE?

  • In this video, I do a bit more work on V12 Detroit Diesel 2 Stroke powered Wally Wabco the dump truck as part of the quest to see if I can bring him back to life. Wally is a 60 year old Wabco 35 Haul Truck that had been left sitting for years at a Quarry untouched before I got to him. In a series of earlier videos, I got the 12v71 Detroit Diesel 2 Stroke engine running and I eventually got Wally Wabco driving. I’ve battled poor weather most of the way, but this video is a follow on and an update from the earlier videos for those interested. Thanks very much for watching.

    My first regimented training was on military jets, A10s, F4s etc. We pretty much worked like you’re demonstrating. Cleanliness was a constant mantra. Right tools, right procedures. Not everyone could deal with the demands. But the concern of having a jet come down unexpectedly was something of an incentive, especially since we documented every act of maintenance so there wasn’t too much doubt as to which crew had been on the plane.

    Funny thing about that old DB tractor Bruce, my father in law down in Kyogle has an old D7 dozer that was doing the exact same thing! Couldn’t work out for the bloody life of us what it was, we were mucking around with the thing for weeks! We had the injectors out, the rockers off, we had my auto sparky mate go over it, you name it. turned out as your mate suggested that it was the pump timing 👏

    Speaking of timing. About 30 years ago we picked up an old Allis-Chalmers cable blade HD-16 dozer. It would start and run but was an absolute dog and would barely push. Well, we advanced the injector pump timing, and she woke right up. Still had some other issues to repair such as a cracked cylinder head, but after the repairs, that machine was an animal. It would push and skid huge turns of logs way beyond what it should have been capable of. The exhaust note was awesome under a load.
    My uncle preferred this machine over other old machines of the same era, including the mighty Caterpillar. The dozer was sold after my uncle passed away and not long after the new owner bought it, the engine locked up. Unfortunately, it went to scrap. Cheers from another Bruce in Eureka, CA, USA. 🙂

    Looks lik you're a steel worker as well as everything else. FINE job on the pan and tell those tales! Not everybody will understand but some of us might and that'll be just fine! The old 2-cycle fired right up and gagged everybody in a mile. Diesels always had bad breath when cold. I'm ready for it to get wound up and go but like you said, it'll need to dry out somewhat. I got to help turn bolts somewhat but I did better herding than I did fixing., which I sure did. Watch out for that killer dog and THANKS and CHEERS!

    @richardw.foxhall3392 Před 3 měsíci

    Bruce as you know expirianced hands give a slight back turn when making up threaded fittings on hoses, bungs and bolts that are being installed. It went easily because your patietcne was applied before any force or spanner. Any one worth their salt spin them together by hand to make them figer tight first. People in a hurry cross thread way more often than the patient mechanic. And the Gem of checking the timing on all older more worn engines is spot on. With every other part on the engine worn out why not the timing gear on a distrobutor or injection pump?
    You are a good hearted man for passing it on and giving credit to where it belonged.
    You also strike me as a man who has had to fix more than a few problems from careless dirty assemblies on hydrualic systems. Also, clean fittings will reassemble easier than slimey ones, leaks show better on clean stuff. Basic common semse, I am so happy I stumbled onto your channel. Best wishes to you and yours, from Perry, Ohio. U.S.A.

    @aserta Před 3 měsíci +1

    I'm with you on this one. Always clean before removing stuff. Not just because it keeps things ok if you don't want that dirt in, but it's just much better to work after you've cleaned things up.
    Also, the stories have to flow! That's half the job, telling the story. :) It also reminds me of when i used to work with my uncle. He had a ton of stories of his own with all little things to learn from or about.

I look at the shot compositions the way a cinematographer would and everything is top notch, well lit and focused. Loved the story and the resolution at the end (carton of beer as a reward). Pretty organic some of that old machinery. Snakes, spiders etc make working on these things interesting!

    G’day Bruce, stumbled onto ur channel probably as i watch Kurtis from cutting edge engineering and the algorithm added u to my feed. No experience in engineering and Am a printer and graphic designer. Love ur channel, perfect way to watch someone who is meticulous, does a great job and helps preserve bits of history. Keep up the good work - regards markc
