Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Well, that's a first for me - seeing an elephant being milked! Happy birthday dear little Mwana, and well done Murera for being a brilliant Mum.
Also surprised to see an elephant being milked, and even more so that she stood still for it. Was there some trouble at the beginning? The milk wouldn't let down, or the baby couldn't quite reach high enough?
Murera is a little special. She has a back leg injury that healed but left her leg not standing straight. If you watch her videos, you can notice it. Her tall body can't bend well enough for the newly born calf to nurse, so the caretaker s helped the mom and calf out at the beginning. Her pregnancy was a surprise.

What an amazing, precious girl our Mwana is. It’s hard to believe she’s a year old. She seems to have everyone at Sheldrake wrapped around her cute little trunk. Every elephant is precious and special but Muerera has shown everyone what’s possible with the birth of her miracle, baby!🐘💖

I thank Mrs. Dafne for her love, trust and firmness in giving Murera the opportunity to fight for her life along with the entire team that surrounded and cared for her. I am moved by Mrs. Dafne's message with this wonderful example of Murera who knew how to respond to the love that was given to her and despite her sufferings, also with the loss of her adopted son Luggard (another great brave man) Murera determined to be happy, to give life, and Mwana is the fruit of all that dedication of human care and love and of herself who is a great brave!!👏👏👏 They are a heavenly message that encourages and encourages us 🌹🌹🌹❤❤❤
