IKEA Hemnes Vanity installation | Master Bath Remodel (Part 8)

- In this video, I show how I installed an IKEA Hemnes vanity and medicine cabinet in my master bathroom. Storage in this bathroom was severely lacking, so we chose IKEA because they have unique plumbing that keeps the pipes out of the way and enables the vanity to have full-depth drawers. The hardest part was adapting my copper drain pipe so the vanity pipes would fit close to the wall.
Over the Winter of 2018, I gutted my tiny master bathroom, moved a wall to double the useable space, and completely rebuilt it from the ground up with high-end finishes like Carrara marble and a smart shower.

Two things -- you have that square washer backwards -- and you're meant to hand-tighten it. The washer has those ends sticking out to catch the horizontal groves in the mounting plate. You hand tighten them because a power tool will almost always throw it around. It's amazing how they designed it the way they did... it just works!
My parents bought that exact vanity and sink a couple of years ago but never got around to doing the job of replacing the old one with it, so I'm gonna do it for them for Christmas as a surprise. Thanks for the video, big help!
We LOVE it!!
I'm on day 3 and about to say eff the whole thing. Soldering is out the question for me.
Sorry to hear that. Best to call a plumber in that case.
Great choice on the vanity! Bathroom looks stunning!
Thank you! We installed this sink and vanity today, your video was instrumental in our success!!
OMG we LOVE it so much!
Nice job. We have similar taste in color scheme. I was also impressed with your plumbing skills...its the one thing I don't like to do DIY.
My dad was such a good mentor.
Great job.
Thanks for posting this. Answered many questions we have of this vanity!
Great video... replacing a vanity/sink in my new house, and skulking around the Ikea website, but they only have small and not-so-good photos. This was very helpful. Thank you!
I’ve since moved into a new house that has a 7-foot vanity top with double sinks and my wife STILL MISSES that IKEA vanity. You will not regret it.
Awesome work
Thanks!
Great video series, almost ASMR in my opinion
ASMR?
HandyDadTV look up ASMR videos.... you’ll enjoy it
@@handydadtv your voice is very soothing
Also someone swapped out the draw knobs, very nice!
Good eye. The originals were a little too Shaker for us.
Thanks for sharing this helpful video... One thing I noticed was that those Ikea wall mounting brackets were installed with the screw plate around the wrong way. They are supposed to be installed with the sharp edges onto the wall side so as to grip onto the metal ridges stamped into the angle bracket plate. It also stops them spinning so easily as you experienced. Refer 5:50.
Yes I reversed them.
Hi bud. When you were installing the water hoses. I saw a water dripping within the pipe on the inside wall look at 6:55 - 6:59.
cheers bud for that. ikea should be paying you. great video
No affiliation with IKEA. I just like their stuff.
Appreciate it.
My pleasure
Good video and explanations. Honestly, I was after the installation of the overflow tube, which, I think, you don't mention.
Thanks, anyway, for sharing
I mentioned it, but didn’t show it. It was a pain and it feels wrong, but it works.
@@handydadtv Agree . I finally got the point on this file:
www.ikea.com/us/en/assembly_instructions/rattviken-sink-bowl__AA-908095-2_pub.pdf
It is a bit tricky but all was cleared.. Thanks again
Great video! Thanks! Did you use any plumbers putty around the drain when you installed it into the sink? Thanks again!
IKEA uses rubber washers. No plumbers putty needed.
Nice job! I so want to order this vanity. My wastepipe goes down into the floor, about 8 inches away from the wall, I wonder if there is enough space underneath the vanity to put some sort of elbow bend in to lead the pipe closer to the wall? My plumber will be so happy if I give him a challenge 😂
There’s about 6-7 inches of clearance under the vanity - even more if you raise the adjustable feet. Should be fine. Thanks for the comment!
So, I watched your video. It was extremely helpful. I do have one question, when I went to put the overflow pipe on the bracket it just slips off. Should I just use a hose clamp or am I doing something wrong?
I’ve installed two of these and never needed a clamp, but it wouldn’t hurt to add it.
Here is the more recent installation czcams.com/video/fpl-2Unx9Xs/video.html
Great video. As it's been two years, has the faucet started squeeking, or being difficult to open, close? How would you go about replacing the cartridge on it if needed?
Thankfully it’s still working fine. I don’t know how to change the cartridge if I needed to.
How did you fasten the sink to the wall or vanity cabinet? I bought this same Hemnes products you installed. The other bathroom vanity I installed (not an Ikea vanity) had two holes for bolts to anchor it to the wall. Also I noticed you put the rectangle adjustment washers on backwards. The Ikea fastening system with the slatted metal wall attachments and the rectangle pieces is quite smart, those washers catch on the metal ridges and enable you to raise or lower for levelling.
You are right that I installed the washers backwards. I caulked the sink onto the vanity. That’s all.
Thank you very much. I didn't see the brand faucet in the description box.. Where did you buy, what brand? This matches my bathroom
The faucet was also from IKEA.
Great video. Could you tell me how much clearance there is from the end of the drawers to the wall? We have water pipes that stick out 5 inches from the wall. Thanks!
I don’t know for sure (i moved), but 5 inches may be too much.
Oh yes, one other thing. Did you put any Dap between the sink and cabinet when you placed the sink on top of the cabinet? Thanks again!
Yes the sink is held in place with caulk.
I bought the sink and unit was worried if I would be able to have due to plumbing but after seeing this I think I’ll be fine
I love IKEA plumbing!
That is the perfect bathroom size for what I'd like to do in my home...is that roughly 6x7?
Including the shower, it’s about 6x8.
@@handydadtv big help...thanks
Hi, is the ikea cabinet holding well after these many years in a wet bathroom? We are confused about spending on it. Your answer would help us make the decision. Thank you!
Yes! Absolutely love IKEA vanities.
Would this cabinet work if my drain pipe comes from the floor and not the wall? Is there a possibility it works if I keep the pipe really close to the wall or do the drawers go all the way back?
The pipe can come up from the floor, you just need to route it near the wall. The drawers don’t go all the way back. There is room for pipes and valves.
LOL 5:07. I feel YA
I am considering this vanity for the same reason, full storage. My question is, would I be able to fit a Moen faucet on there and can I sub out the drain and overflow chrome with the Moen one? I’m hoping to use a brushed hold and I will paint the vanity.
The drain system comes with the sink. You can use a Moen faucet, but you won’t be able to use their pop-up drain. It will be the standard IKEA strainer.
HandyDadTV Thank you for your assistance!
Unfortunately my ikea is 2 hours away and I did not get their plastic plumbing included with my sink/vanity. It is not the same one as this but can I use a standard kit with adapters?
I don’t think so.
i have recently purchased a similar basin unit where the basin has a lip at the back. However the location for the unit does not have any tiles applied to the wall yet. It seems a waste of tiles and money to tile behind the unit if you're never going to see them. If i install the unit to the wall and then tile around, the thickness of the tiles+adhesive above the basin would probably be flush with the lip - will this be an issue? Or should I add a backboard to the wall to compensate for the tile+adhesive thickness? Any guidance would be welcomed. Thanks
You can absolutely tile around it. No issue at all.
@@handydadtv thanks - however if i tile around it, i will end up with the tiles probably being flush with the top of the lip at the back of the basin. I am concerned if this is going to be an issue with the aesthetic and sealing at that specific point. (??)
great video but the tabs that hold the vanity to the wall are installed backwards. 5:37
It won’t matter.
How much play is there with the location of the drain pipe? Does the sink have to be centered or is there enough play to mount the vanity an inch or 2 off center?
Plenty of play, side to side, and up and down.
@@handydadtv thank you!
I love your videos. What are the dimensions on your vanity and sink?
I moved from that house but I believe that was a 30-inch vanity. Check ikea.com to see the exact sizes.
@@handydadtv thank you
Is there a minimum angle required for the pipe from the sink to the wall?
Technically, 1/4” per foot.
@@handydadtv Thanx.
How has the finish held up since the install and will you still recommend? I’m and currently looking at this for my bathroom. Thank you in advance.
The vanity and medicine cabinet look good as new. Highly recommend.
Where did you get the faucet?
IKEA
5:37 and 9:45 - Mounting plates are placed wrong side... The sharp edges of the rectangle should base on the notches in the bracket.

Nice intalation, the only problem if this was my house is the wife would still fill all the space and I wouldent even have space for a toothbrush
Hahahaha 👍🏻
Likewise
great video, but missing lots of important steps
It’s a delicate balance between detailed and boring.
No help. No copper pipe in my house.
PVC is even easier.
