Clearly, your truths have a lot of logic, old wolf... That ugly knife and the importance of good, well-tempered steel. Personally, I loved it!
It also happens that sometimes we want a knife to hit like an axe, have a thickness that allows batoning, and be versatile and cut like a scalpel... Impossible. Just as you say, a small axe, a powerful knife and a fine cutting knife would complete the triad so as not to go to the forest so overwhelmed. A small saw would also come in handy, as they are lightweight. Excellent video!

Like you, I have packed an Old Hickory for years, with two other knives, and a Leatherman, and a hatchet, and a folding saw. I never use a knife for splitting wood other than kindling, that's what the damn axe is for. Too much B.S. on CZcams. Maybe you could burn some of that B.S! Lol!!! Keep the vids coming, it's good to see another old timer like myself doing things the same way. Cheers

I have five or six old hickory butcher knives in blades lengths from 5.5 to 7.5 inch and possibly bigger. I also have the paring knives (excellent neck knives for small game or small chores) I have one forgecraft (out of production since the 60's I think) I picked up at a yard sale many years ago. All of them are 1095 steel, but all of my old hickory's (butcher blades) are much too thin to be much use out of the kitchen...yes they had flexible models in 1095 as well as rigid. Mine are too flexible, but my forgecract is perfect for the field and is super tough and hard and preferable to most others. Yours may very well be a forgecraft instead of an old hickory. It sure looks like it to me! old hickory knives have a wider blade with considerably more belly than a forgecraft and looking at the video yours looks more like a forgecraft, but it's really hard to tell from a video. Regardless both are as good as the other as long as they're the rigid models of OH IMO. People say the forgecraft is harder and holds a better edge, but I don't know so much about that. I used to own the DR's and green river blades from patch to butcher...even better choices IMO, but sadly stolen from me over the years.

My friend, I like the choice of your knives. Do you carry a pocket knife. How about showing how you sharping your knives, if you have time someday. I would take one of the folding saws for wood cutting, axe for splitting. I feel like a person is inviting someone or something in when you are trying to chop wood. You can hear chopping a long ways off. Might be my up bringing, my dad cut wood for his dads moonshine still, never used a axe, the revenuers could track them down by the noise of chopping wood. You take care my friend and stay safe.

I do carry a pocket knife every day.

Batoning is an efficient method to make precise cuts with minimal effort for various building tasks and to split kindling to start a fire.. when people started thinking it's for splitting any kind of large diameter wood and that chopping with a small knife is a necessary task it became just ridiculous and you're better off with a splitting wedge/maul/axe/froe and a dedicated large blade/machete for these tasks.
    Good video.
