The Smoked Maple Old Fashioned Cocktail

- In today's video, I'm making the perfect cocktail for fall - the Smoked Maple Old Fashioned! This one follows the Old Fashioned template of spirit, bitters, sugar, and water, but with a few little twists of my own. The result is a smokey, sweet, walnut-y glass of yum. Think of pancakes by a campfire - in my mind that's a very good thing. Enjoy this one, everybody! Cheers!

There are a lot of ads these days. Congratulations, Andrera!! Your chanel is developing lot!!
Where did you get the stave?
My wife doesn't like Angostura bitters, so I use sassafras and sorghum bitters on her old fashioned.
Love your channel, your energy, skills and knowledge. Thanks for bringing this one back to my coaster. Heads up though. You got the hashtag wrong at the end. No worries, I'm sure everyone figured it out. Thanks again for being you. Cheers
Congrats on the great success of your channel. Well deserved!
I'm really enjoying this channel, but what I like the most is you passion about what you're doing and actually explaining the difference between different alchols and the story behind its making. Cheers!!!
Appreciate that, Anastasiia! Cheers to you! 🥃
That shot of the slow-mo glass flip with the smoke is smooth af.
"You still smell like the campfire from the night before, and you have pancakes!!" That is a compelling description! Thanks so much!
The maple syrup + black walnut bitters has been my "go-to" fall Old Fashioned; I'm so glad you made this!
You made me craving for an Old Fashioned right now Anders (still a bit early in Slovenia so I have to wait some more) Cheers! 🥃🥃
My favorite Old Fashioned recipe: 2oz Woodford Reserved, 1/4 rich demerara syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 2 dashes Regans Orange bitters. Stir in mixing glass with ice, strain into glass with a Death Star ice cube, garnish with an orange peel. I love your channel! You're like the Peter McKinnon of cocktails for me. Cheers!
If you can find it where you're at, High West's "Campfire" makes my favorite old fashioned. It's blasphemy in a bottle, being a blend of bourbon, rye and scotch... Balanced to perfection. I prefer a rich honey syrup, and just stick with ango alone.
Death Star ice cube!!!
Hi Chris, have you tried the Woodford reserve double oaked? Would like to know how it differs from the cheaper Woodford Reserve.
This is one of my favorite cocktails, tastes so damn good for relatively minor effort. A win-win!
Smoking the glass looks amazing! I can't imagine how good that must smell when you add the rest of the old fashioned.
I love your channel dude. Much like I love learning new cocktail styles and history! You are naturally entertaining, funny and very easy to watch! Big fan.
For a guy that wants to become a bartender this channel is one of my favorites! Love how you explain everything. Cheers 🍻
your edits and cinematography are top-notch! not to mention great cocktail recipes..keep it up!
I love an Old Fashiobed and maple, so can't t wait to try this one!
This is art. Great shots, amazing drinks and overall fantastic content!
Oh my goodness that looks AMAZING!!
So glad to see you used Elijah Craig! They have been my go-to for Old Fashions for years but no one else on YT seems to be promoting them. Great stuff!
This sounds amazing. I'll have to make one this weekend.
One of your best videos Anders..
This has been a great channel find for me!! I am trying to expand my cocktail horizon and this channel is dope for it
I got so excited when you pulled out the Black Walnut bitters. I freaking love those bitters. It adds so much character to dark liquor cocktails. I often pair it with an aged or spiced rum. Keep up the great work man. Your personality makes the videos a true joy to watch. Cheers brother
Thanks, Kawone! I'm with you - the black walnut bitters are magic in a drink. Cheers! 🥃
One of my favorite videos of yours so far.
I went to Blythe & Burrows in Portland, ME, where they essentially made two Old Fashioneds with one mix. The first half of it went into the rocks glass over a clear ice cube. The second half was poured into a bottle with smoke and sat corked until the first half was finished. Two very amazing and different drinks.
Love this video! We do a variation of a smoked old fashioned at the tasting room I work at in Colorado. We use house made Tobacco bitters (no actual tobacco used), angostura bitters, a Maple nutmeg simple syrup we make with sarsaparilla root and cinnamon, and finally our signature bourbon. We burn oak boards on our bar and the guests always love it. As always love the content!
Yay! I'm a Kentucky native, still living and working in the Bluegrass, and I'm glad to see you getting into the history and deeper story of bourbon. Elijah Craig is a good one -- great to see it featured on the channel. If you ever depart from Rittenhouse rye, give Bulleit Rye a chance, it's excellent. And if you ever make it down to the Bluegrass, definitely go for a bourbon tour, they are very interesting and worth seeing! If you've never smelled the Angels Share, you are missing out on one of the most delicious smells in the world. (Heck, if you ever make it down here, I'll take you on a bourbon tour myself!)
Bulleit Rye is absolute garbage. Worst Rye in existence. Hudson & Woodenville are the top.
@@joewas2225 dont be a jerk about it and people might listen more
Oh MAN!!.. I
EC my absolute fav for old fashions
The October 11th newsletter sent me here. Managed to finally pick up some black walnut bitters today. Damn this is pleasant...perfect for a mid-western middle to late October.
Can't wait to try! I love smokey drinks!
I love your channel. I'm learning a great deal. But I watch because it is very relaxing to me. Thanks.
My girlfriend just bought me a cocktail smoker that I haven't used yet! Perfect timing on the video, definitely will be making this as I love old fashioneds. Cheers!
Stumbled on this channel… Awesome! Recent old fashioned lover!
Looks like a good drink fornthese dreary autumn days! Thanks
Thank you very much for all of your content. You and Az are the best! I've learned a ton from you and have enjoyed passing on the knowledge to friends and family. With the holidays rapidly approaching, I'm thinking about how to apply some of what I am learning to a larger crowd. Are there any shots you might recommend that are a bit classier than the word "shot" usually connotes? It could be a cool episode to show a few. Many thanks for any suggestions, and again, absolutely adore your channel!
Anders,
Your videos are top notch. You’re cocktail variations are the most balanced I’ve ever had. I am patiently awaiting the publication of a cocktail book ;)
Love a good smoked maple Old Fashioned. I use cherry wood, Ango and Regans. I’ll need to try it with the black walnut.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS
At a recent trip to Boston, I had a walnut maple Manhattan and although there was no smoke presence, the combination of real maple syrup and the black walnut bitters add a nice complexity to the Manhattan. The first second you taste the alcohol and then the undercurrent of maple and walnut come into play but not overpowering the alcohol. As I love smoked foods, I will definitely seek this Old Fashion out.
Had one of these at the Fairmont in Jasper Canada. Still the best I've ever had.
This sounds absolutely delicious - "to the shops!"
Congrats on 100k subscribers!!!
Lol so much fire safety stuff and he immediately turns into a little kid when the torch turned on. I do too
You make me smile 😊 every time
NEVER mixed cocktails before but I'm learning because I love to cook so I've gotta learn drinks!
This one of my favorite drinks. A great variant is to have a nice thick piece of maple bacon with it.
looks amazing!
I like the smoking method, pretty cool
I like that in all the videos of your I have seen the clock is always 5 o’clock it’s sure is some where right
Dude, I need a campfire, pancakes, and an Old Fashioned. Thank!
thanks for sharing man. good stuff👍🏼keep it up
I have had some experience with "headers" after too much bourbon.
I’ve always been staunchly pro sugar cube and anti simple syrup when it comes to Old Fashioneds but this … this changes everything. 🥃 🍁 🤯
Great Video!! I freaking LOVE this cocktail & make a couple of these every week... Cheers! :)
Vanilla, Spice and everything nice. 😉
I just did Whiskey barrel aged maple syrup with rye and frangelico, cardamon bitters and Maple salt. Top with an orange peel and it’s wonderful.
Whoa - that does sound wonderful! Cheers to you, Robert! 🥃
Robert please share your recipe sounds delicious!
@@rupeshpatel2976 2, 1/4, 1/4, dash, sprinkle, short stir, big cube, twist. Enjoy!
Awesome thanks you rock 👍
Thank you for the useful video, Andrers. These days, I think your video is the best for cocktail-related videos :)
Thank you so much! Cheers!
i love this video
I watched this video the other week and the next day bought a piece of a bourbon barrel stave and last night made a couple of these for me and some buddies. One of the best Old Fashioned cocktails I have had (and the best I have ever made)! Thank you for this recipe!
Love that you found a stave for this one! Cheers! 🥃
Where does one buy a bourbon barrel stave?
Use Whistle Pig Maple Barrel Aged maple syrup if you want to take it up a notch! Great video Anders. We watch you weekly.
I’ve made a similar version with standard bitters, but I smoked water and made cubes with it
FIRE 🔥
Very nice, Maple and fire, All you need now is some plaid!!
Good call, David! I missed it this time 😂
FIRE!!
Best part...Az at 5:17... "Oooo..." 🥰
y'know, after watching these videos for a while, you've slowed down in your intros and simplified your approach, but in doing so, you've added more of your personality and charm going into the videos.
granted, you might simply be tired, but it adds to my enjoyment of your content so thank you for another great video and great drink!
Thanks, Ethan! I'm only just a little tired 😂
I think bourbon cocktails are my favorites, and this includes science. I just asked my husband to pick me up a flame thrower.
Think you may want to call it a torch. A flame thrower is something that would be used in an Aliens film ; )
This inspired me to smoke a glass in my Traeger grill, then build the drink. Also, smoking orange slices in the grill adds more smokey goodness. Happy Fall everyone!
I made this tonight and I'm about to make another it's so good. You're passion really shows and I'm subscribed!
Thank you so much! Happy your loving the drink - Cheers!
What a delightful riff on the old fashioned. So cool you got sponsored by Elijah Craig! It’s in my top 5 favorite bourbons.
Wow!! That slo mo smoke in the dark was perfection (cheers Az!). When you pulled out that plank and said you were gonna use it I was like oh...what? Very cool technique!
That was my favorite shot too!
I don't have a barrel stay to light up. I just use some maple wood chips. But I set the ice on a plate next to it. Once the glass is well smoked I slowly lift it and set it over the ice. That way the ice absorbs a bit of smoke as well.
Great vid!
I’m allergic to walnuts so I tried this with rhubarb bitters for some “bite”. Turned out great. Thx for the recipe.
Great video as always, sir! Congratulations!
Thanks, Leonardo! Cheers!
This video made me wish I lived in the US =O so well-put and presented, seems like an awesome cocktail!
Captain Raymond Holt will be proud of your knowledge of barrels! Awesome video and a meaningful challenge for old fashioned week
Cheers, Royston! 🥃
This is so cool!
I love to make this (with Elijah Craig) without smoke and including 15-20ml of a tawny port. Black walnut bitters and that maple syrup are a match made in heaven and Elijah Craig just makes a great OF no matter how you go about it. Awesome vid as always!
Love the call of a tawny port, Danny! I'm going to try that - cheers!
Making one right now, with a tweak of my own Bourbon aged Maple Syrup!!!!!
I know this comment is a bit late, but this inspired me to make something really similar: A Smoked Ginger Old Fashioned. Used your ginger syrup recipe and some liquid smoke (no real smoker unfortunately) and a Japanese whiskey. Delicious, thank you!
We all have that favorite bartender. You're mine favorite. Cheers and to your health!
Awesome perfection
ANDERS!!!! Your growth as a human is def noteworthy!!! This is a great looking cocktail!!! I wonder how long that piece of wood will last??? I need one of those!!! CHEERS!!!!!
So far it's lasted me a long, long while! The smell of the sweet smoke is incredible!
Yum yummmm
Love the videos, could you do a video on your bar set up?
I’m absolutely going to make this!!!! Thanks for the idea!
Have you ever made a old fashioned with Benedictine?
Trying this this weekend! I don't have the fancy barrel, but I do have the smoketop and their maple wood chips. Had to order the bitters online.
Greatness
Please am full time mixology, boss. How do I get the certificate ? On this my job . I really love this job so much, please sir, inspired me on how to get it. I work with different companies for long time now that is how I acquired the knowledge. Thanks boss
I managed a bar back in the day. All your videos do is remind me of all the delicious drinks i'm not enjoying or making. It's a love/hate thing.
damn that looks good
This sounds incredible. Might need to revisit the old fashioned now
Always good to revisit the Old Fashioned! Cheers, Zachary! 🥃
@@AndersErickson is there a Japanese whiskey you would recommend? I've enjoyed the couple brands I've tried
@@zacharymichener4687 so many. All depends on what you like. Suntory Toki is a nice one I'll mix with, but otherwise Hakushu 12 is one of my favorite whiskies if you can get your hands on it. Then there's the many expressions from Nikka - all of which I enjoy!
@@AndersErickson thank you!!
That was a great description for that drink lol and looks amazing
Definitely a tasty drink! Thanks, Tyler! 🔥🥞🥃
Love a Maple Old Fashioned Cocktail. Gotta try this with Elijah Craig, which I also love.
Perfect for the season! Cheers, Carl! 🥃
I made a Rye, ginger syrup with Peychaud's Bitters Old Fashioned before watching this video. I made my ginger syrup a couple of weeks ago after watching Ander's syrup making video awhile ago.
Anders, man it’s great to see another bourbon cocktail. My favorite. This looks very good. I have actually tried maple syrup in an old fashioned before when I did a bacon wash bourbon. Maple gave it another flavor profile for sure. Will you ever make a Bentons old fashioned for the show? Keep it up man
Good call, Kyle - I'll keep it in mind. Cheers!
Liked seconds in because fire.
All over this one....cheers!
Loved this video! I made this drink and it’s delicious, except I didn’t have a way to smoke it.
I absolutely loved it. Where can we get this burned wood
I just wanna say that i love your channel as much i love cocktails, you're awesome: Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing nice recipes; i was wondering, do you know some cocktails with mezcal? Greetings from Mexico. Cheers!
