MMy ninja weapons were tools farmers used on a day to day basis. The throwing star is part of a tool used to till gardens, as weapons werent legal to own, so ninja trained in private , used toold broken diwn to make weapons and attacks were always at night to hide who they were and because they couldnt beat the tanks that were the horse back samurai. Ninja didnt have schools until far in history, many of this is a large stretch into the true history of ninja and samurai. The orignal ninja were were farmers and their sons who wished to rid themselves of over controling warlords and their samurai protectors.

Throwing stars as a climbing aide, I don't think so. Imagine grabbing hold of a sharp edge and then put all of your body weight on it, didn't need your fingers after all did you.
In Australia, we have naturally growing caltrops, commonly known as three-cornered jacks or Bindis.

I have made caltrops simply by twisting 2 staples together and twisting in such a way that one piece of the staple is always sticking up no matter how you toss them down
