Thanks for your question and appreciative comment. This is a lovely dark leaved selection with a compact (for a Smoke Bush) habit, but it cannot be described as a fast grower (at least in the early stages). After planting, they often take a few years to root in and become established, and then that's when they will put on a decent amount of growth and make a wonderful show in beds and borders, making eventually a rounded shrub that will be about 8-10' high. So, if you are looking for something that will stand out and give long lasting leaf color, then this will fit the bill, but of you are looking for something to grow up fast and make a screen, then we would suggest you visit some of our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ and survey the plant selection there and perhaps even chat with the experts and they will be ablet to guide you too.
Incidentally, have you caught one of David's recent videos on pruning shrubs yet? it is entitled "How To Get More Color From Shrubs with Attractive Foliage": czcams.com/video/eI3vrWCQ7FM/video.htmlsi=Av0Hn0jy0HqMVjOg In this video you will see how he trims back ("pollards") an established Smoke Bush selection called Cotinus Royal Purple and if you tune into an updated version which we intend posting soon you will see how it turns out. it is quite dramatic, and we think, might be something that you will find interesting.
Have you subscribed to our channel yet? Finally, a reminder that our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ are usually well stocked with lots of gorgeous plants, so if you live in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region be sure to stop in and take a look…. Because that’s where you will discover all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections.

    How fast do they grow

Depends on the conditions, but I would think somewhere about 12 inches or so per year. Once established many people prune them hard back each spring to near the ground (it is called pollarding) and then they produce strong vigorous shoots that will grow very fast, but this is only a technique that you can employ once they are well established.

Does the color stay as vibrant in part sun? Say 4 hours of sun?
