The garden centers only tell you that the varieties they sell are “best”. Also, the employees rarely know anything about the particular plants that are there, but instead are working to help load plants for customers. Yes, this is even large and well known private nurseries. ( just at our biggest in the area, yesterday).
I end up instructing shoppers and employees every time I am at a nursery.
It would help tremendously if you would make available a chart which compares the many different Boxwood varieties, including the old ones and the several new ones, as to growth habit, winter hardiness, disease resistance, rate of growth.
This video was much needed. My 21 year old Boxwoods are looking beautiful even though I have never done the “ rejuvenation type” of deep pruning that you show. Yes, the inside is old thick branches, but the 4’x4’ shrubs are healthy and so beautiful.

With increasing deer pressure, it gets more difficult to find shrubs the deer won’t browse or completely defoliate. We had landscaping boxwood blight around our townhomes, living in an Association, which we all did.
When we had them, the Associations lawn service had been cutting them into a rectangular shape. It was So Wrong. I was glad that blight happeneded to them, which they removed them, simply because, I could plant my own variety of Hydrangeas and Hellabores, which turned it into being pretty and not the cookie cutter matching Everybody! 💚🌿

I try, but I just can’t get myself to be so aggressive at hedgeclipping as you are! I do the internal rejuvenation, but as soon as I try to really shape my boxwood, my hands fail me!
We understand, it does take a bold approach that can be hard to muster, especially if you are doing it for the first time.
All we can suggest is that you try to be a little bolder each time, and then perhaps as you see the benefits unfold, it will give you the encouragement to "take the bull by the horns" and take them back a little harder.
Then David says that the other alternative, is to wait until someone makes you mad!
Then out you go... to your Boxwoods... Armed with pruners or your hedging shears.... and then chop merrily away.
It might lessen your frustration, and probably do both you and your Boxwood plants - a world of good!

Whenever I trim my boxwoods, they always scar and burn on cut edges, no matter the season, no matter using a hedge trimmer or shears. What am I doing wrong. Most are in the shade with some sun.
You cant use shears. They should be hand trimmed so you don’t cut leaves mid leaf. The mid leaf cutting is what turns brown
We trim our plants in the nursery by mechanical means and we see cuts on the leaves too. It happens as another viewer mentions when the the leaves are cut across. It can be a little unsightly (with the brown edges), but we don't worry about it too much, especially if we trim them in spring our when the plants are growing strongly because usually it is only noticeable for a short time until the new growth pushes out to hide it.
Pruning the stems by hand with hand shears would help to eliminate most of this, but that is slow and labor intensive, so picking a time when the plants are poised to put our new growth quickly is probably the best practical way to minimize this.

When I bought my home 30+ years ago there was a boxwood hedge in my frount side yard about 15 yrs ago we took it out and put a vinal fence up but a small root stayed I keep it and shape d it round last year I let it grow tall and now I'm gonna shap it in a cone shape as soon as the spring bulbs are finished blooming. I have a few boxwood. I believe they are Mountian green. I love how you design your property with boxwood . I would love to move my boxwood and place them in a natural bed rather than uniform design. I really appreciate your knowledge on boxwood!
Thank you, as you've noticed we like the informal look too. We suppose it depends on setting - older traditional homes or situations where the formal look fits in etc.
Evergreens like Boxwood are valuable "anchor" plants and when planted in informal numbers 3s, 5's 7's etc. provide terrific interest all-year-round, plus of course, they are seldom bothered by deer, which is big thing here in our region.
If you lift them with a good rootball in the autumn or early spring, they usually transplant well, and of course our partnering garden centers will be able to fix you up with healthy, well shaped, premium sized new plants too. So, if you want to invest in some of the ones that David mentions in this video that are not suspectable to things like Leaf miner and Boxwood blight then they would get you off to a great start too.

I have a lot of Box here in England. A low hedge and many Buxus balls in terracotta pots. I have not yet experienced blight or caterpillar but then I spray regularly with two different products. It’s an effort to keep it all it good condition.

You should also be VERY CAREFUL where you buy your plants. The last thing you want to do is bring in some of those nasty things into your garden. Take a leaf out of our book...., we only propagate from our own stocks, we never bring in any Boxwood plants from outside sources (unless the plants have been through quarantine), and we do not allow nursery visitors to walk or drive around our plants, incase they have some pathogens or any of these things on their shoes or vehicle wheels etc.
We only get our plants from reputable places that have the same mind set as ourselves, and that means buying (ONLY) the best quality, healthiest plants we can lay our hands on. Cheap deals or sickly looking, drought stressed plants happen for a reason, and its often down to poor management or lack of care.
If you were talking to David, he would tell you that some of the worst problems he has in his garden came in as apparent good deals. What looked like good deals at the time turned out to be very expensive purchases!

I prune mine every Spring just after their first flush in Texas. Mine are Japanese Boxwoods. Mine are beautiful and are in hot sunlight from about noon until the sun goes down. They can handle the hot Texas sun in summer with zero issues.
Thanks for watching and letting us know. Trimming after the first flush helps to keep them tighter and more compact. They just look a little "chopped back", but then again they quickly recover and as you say look nice in the summer sun.

Thanks for watching and posting your question. If you get a few minutes, take a look at our video again, and at the 10 minute mark, you will hear David explain the reasons why he suggests that the best time is in early spring. Then he proceeds to explain his technique for reducing he size and re-invigorating the plants.
If your plants are unsightly and bothering you, you could probably take a bit off them ASAP to tidy them up a bit, but the one thing you don't want to do is stimulate a lot of late, soft growth that might be susceptible winter damage. Which is why heavier trimming is better done in spring, that leaves plenty of time for regrowth and at the same time minimizes the duration of when you have to look at your clipped over plants.

That's good to hear. As David explains, start gradually and spread the rejuvenation out over a number of years and eventually you will be able to get it to open up and start growing again from the center. Little by little is the key, your plants will benefit from having air circulating again through the foliage and be longer lived and less susceptible to disease issues. Remember to clean your tools frequently, especially in between plants.

At one time I had a small hedge that was just at the stage where they were big enough to fill in between the gap. Then we had a nasty winter and three of them were severely damaged. Half of the bush was dead, so instead of starting over I experimented and cut all of the dead out. I figured I didn’t have anything to lose but time. They looked horrible for about 3 years but I got them to grow back. Then the junipers had major damage and I cut out big sections of the bushes. I really didn’t know what to expect, it eventually they started growing and filling in. They took on a different shape but I didn’t mind that.

So does that mean you shouldn't ball shape your boxwood at the base If not then pyramid shape it will be! Ty for all the great information!!!! I purchased my boxwood and they had blight which I didn't know anything about. I did treat them a few times through the summer and I'm hoping it worked .
Yes, they will be longer lived, easier to look after and better furnished to the ground, if you can try to keep them in a natural looking pyramidal shape.

This is the best video on pruning boxwoods but the basic principles apply to many evergreen shrubs like hollies, and a wide variety of ilex, osmanthus, etc. This is how i taught myself to prune ages ago. My shrubbery stands out and looks so natural. It causes me pain to see how almost all shrubs are pruned here in the USA. Everything is turned into meatballs. It is so common now that people think that is the way plants are suppose to look. I know of no professional landscaping companies that have the knowledge or take the time to do it properly. If you want to hire someone to prune your shrubbery properly it will be almost impossible to find a qualified professional and if you do the cost is much more than what the meatball landscapers charge. There are so few well trained gardeners/landscapers in this country anymore...so very sad. Most homeowners haven't a clue how to care for their landscapes if they even have anything decent growing which is why i love the UK so much.
It is time for me to do the pruning of my front landscape. The oldest plants are in their 4th year. I don't want them any larger so it is important for me to get to work and spend time making my plants happy, healthy and beautiful. I love shrubbery...both evergreen and deciduous. The new breeds of barberries look fabulous with the wide variety of greens. Do you grow any of these barberries?

Hello question ! If I wanted to make a large tall shaped boxwood topiary, would I use a single plant and let it grow or would I place 3-4 boxwood plants together? I have read this in an old book of placing three or four together. Do you know if this is done to make tall shrub so you can shape it?

Both ways will work, however David says that he favors the single plant approach. It takes a bit longer, but because (eventually) you have a well-shaped, complete plant, that is growing on its own and not competing with the others, it is likely to be stronger, healthier and longer lived. Sometimes when plants are growing tight like this, you have one or two that don't perform as well as the others, and that leads to frustration because parts of it might be not quite the same color or worse still they develop dead or dying parts and that ruins the effect.

Thanks for your question. Because the newer growth breaks for lower down and is greener and lusher looking, it is quite easy to tell them apart. The key is just continually taking out a proportion of the older growth - so as you prune back into the older grayish colored stems, and they then break with fresh, new green shoots you will be able to see that plant become greener and more productive towards the middle and all over. Then, as you keep doing that the plant will remain vigorous and nice looking and not so prone to falling apart or possibly disease.
Whether you space the time period is over 3-4 years (or even more or less), it really doesn't matter..... The important thing is to keep encouraging renewal growth from sprouting from lower down to keep the plant looking, natural looking and not "chopped over"!

Thank You for the great info. Would you be able to help me with an issue we have? Our young male dog has been lifting his leg on some of our boxwoods. After dicovering this we have put around them a fence to deter him. But what else can we do with the few yellowed bits and help the boxwoods health? They are still 95% green, but have some yellowed leaves at the bottom where he’s lifted his leg. Many Thanks.
Years ago, David says he used to have a friend with a similar problem. So the solution at that time, was to keep a watering can handy, and when the dog marked his scent on a plant, the owner poured water on the foliage to dilute the salts and that helped stop the foliage from burning.
You might also want to talk to some of the pet shop places to see if they can recommend a spray that would disguise the scent without damaging the plant material. Obviously once the sent is deposited, it acts as a target for future excursions, which means that poor old plant is likely to be visited all too frequently. We hope this helps.

Is boxwood a good firewood
Its a dense and quite hard wood, so it probably has a high calorific value, especially if it is seasoned. But, few of us would have plants that would be big enough to produce any meaningful amounts of firewood.
One thing you might be interested to know is that (as David mentions) in this video, Boxwood will regenerate from old wood, so if you do have plants that are big and unruly, and you want to chop them back to hear the base..... They will usually sprout and come again from the stumps! It takes several years, but it is possible.

Can I interior trim yews the same way?

Yes, yew is one of the few conifers that sprouts from old wood, most of the others will not sprout from older interior branches - but yew will. so, if you have to "take the bull by the horns" and trim them back hard, they will take it and regenerate.
This technique, that David employs here on our Boxwoods will work well on Taxus (Yew) and if you keep out nearer the tips (younger growths) - you will see quicker results too.

Do these NewGen varieties attract Boxwood moth? I love boxwoods, but here in southern Ontario, this has become an issue. I have 3 of them that were almost distroyed last year.
