- I got these shorts at Old Navy and I'm a huge fan of them. HOWEVER they are just a BIT too wide for my liking. Figured I would show you how to taper these since I plan on wearing them all the time this summer! Also, this technique works for swim trunks, basketball shorts, and chino shorts as well!

I'm a woman (generally interested in tailoring clothes to look one's best), and I find your channel really interesting and helpful. Lots of tricks applicable to women's clothes too. Plus it is SO SATISFYING to see men's apparel transformed from something that is dumpy looking into something flattering. A great skill to learn and a way to look your best, for anyone!

honestly man, sewing is something a lot of guys should learn. My dad showed me how to sew when I was about 6yrs old, he was Native American so it was just part of the culture, but it's come in handy so many times. For example those George brand t-shirts from Wal-Mart; I like the V-neck, the length and they're very soft & comfy but the body is wide and the short sleeve arms are kind of too open and flap in the wind lol.
A little tightening of the waist, and the arms...BOOM fitted T for chillin at home or playing with my daughter at the park at $5 dollars each, you can't beat that!!
BTW...I use the Brother SQ9285, cheap but good for beginner to intermediate.

No doubt. I've tried to explain that to my girl, who can't see the difference when I'm spending $60 vs. $20 for golf shorts.

I bought a sewing machine a few months back (still in the box) but I haven't had the courage to start tailoring my clothes, but after watching Your videos.... oh man!! I am rady!!!

Top tip: For adjusting one's Hawaiian Shorts (and shirts) use plain white cotton to sew the seams then Sharpies to get the perfect color-pattern match. 🖊

Just today I put some of my tailoring skills to good use. Shortened and hemmed some sleep pants a good 2 1/2". Notes: I'm in no reasonable sense obese or overweight. But why would a 32" waist pair of pants be 2"+ too long on a 6' man? Second note: Shortening and hemming pants is probably 3 out of ten on the sewing skillz scale. And who cares how long your sleep pants are?

That's why i always get my shorts with a 5 ' inch inseam... perfect fit for my legs....

Yup definitely doable, it just depends on the location of the cargo pocket as well as any thick reinforcing seams you might have on your tactical pants.
What's your tips on hemming after this? The inseam is shorter than the outseam, so when I tried to get horizontally on the old line, it came out looking weird. Measure ninety degrees to the inseam and draw a line there? Help!

Hey SD, any hopes for tailoring mesh or knit material? I’m looking at a couple shirts that are knit and have small holes throughout them, and am unsure how to downsize them
You mean like the old school pickup bball style jerseys? Those are absolutely able to be tailored with the same tips. Only difference would be the type of needle you would use, I'd suggest a ballpoint needle.

Yup it makes sense, and that’s why I do it that way. On the thumbnail the outside billow out way too much.

Wide pantlegs look ugly, but have their purpose: try doing squat or other leg exercises at gym, or picking something up without (unhealthy) bending your spine, when pantlegs are narrow and material isn't elastic. I personally prefer convenience over appearance.
Very good points. I have a few pairs that are perfect for squats but are a wider leg. They're only reserved for leg day for that reason...
