I'm of Hungarian decent but could never understand my love of the pipes. I actually helped my son's Royal Canadian Army Cadet corp start a Pipe and Drums band a few years back. Then I discovered that my heritage includes the pipes as well. Nothing like the Highland pipes though. I hope that someday my wife and I can visit Scotland and attend this awesome performance. Thanks for the post.

Some regiments are allowed to wear a "feather bonnet" ("bonnet" means "hat") as part of their full military dress, on special occasions, which is a tall hat built on a tall wire basket covered with ostrich feathers. I am an American piper, I own this full military dress including the big feather bonnet. There is indeed a part of the feathers that hang down on the left side of the big hat.Everything about this art is both primitive yet complicated, and very emotional.

@WPUpioneer the up-side-down chevrons are appointment badges whereas the right-side-up ones are rank badges. Four stripes up-side-down means Pipe Major/Drum Major or Bugle Major and these people can be anything from Sergeant to Colour Sergeant or even Warrant Officer.

It depends enormously on how old you are and what fraction of the traditional art you want to learn. The melodies of these tunes are all very simple on a 1-octave instrument like pipes for a woodwind player to learn. Brass players? Yikes, any woodwind even cheap whistle is going to challenge you. But listen to the quick consonant sounds in this. You can't believe how complicated it is to make them. But if the sound inspires you, try for it, it's a thrill to have this sound around you.

originally the chevrons reflected the style of the cuffs. French line regiments had squared off cuffs so their NCVOs wor their rank insignia chevrons horizontally or points up. Light infatry had pointed cuffs, so chevrons were points up.

There exists another Black Watch, 3rd Battalion Royal Highland Regiment of Canada, since 1862, in 2012 we celebrate 150 years of service to the Crown and to Canada. We carry on the traditions set forth by The Imperial Black Watch, though they no longer carry the Royal Highland Regiment distiction, we carry on and are the last to wear the Blue Balmoral with red tourrie and red Hackle, Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.

+sempergumby I think you have it mixed up there buddy, Americans wear their chevrons with the point up, where as the British, and former British colonies and such wear the chevrons with the point down. I'm not to sure why this is, but some explanations I have been given are that the Americans wanted to seem more masculine with the forces, and another was that they wanted to distinguish themselves from the English.
but hey, I could be wrong about that last part.
