ROLAND JD-Xi JAM - It’s not a toy!

  • I was in five minds about getting the Roland JD-Xi. But I caved when I saw the chord follow settings and thought I might have it as a little sketching and inspiration machine. This is just me mucking about on it. All I do know is I like it :)
    (Changed the title as the trolls can’t quite get the fact that I LIKE the JD-Xi!)

    People don't even realize that the tone edit menu is where the real deal is. I hardly hear anybody really diving into the menu. I was not quite happy until I finally took some time and got into it alot. Alot of the sounds I am getting are 3 times better than alot of the presets. You can't expect a huge sound just from using the front of the jd xi even though you might be able to with certain sounds. Anyway, just go into the tone edit menu and change the wave shape and analog feel number, switch the unison sw on, and put the pulse width modulation and detune on different settings. You will gain a way fuller sound if you take the time to do this. The effects edit will drastically change the sound too, just watch out for what your tempo is set to, because that will control the delay and other effects. Hope this helps a little. Look up other things too like layering three synth sounds and 4 drum sounds together. Alot of people don't know this either. In the tone edit menu, the sequencer buttons 5, 6 and 7 are the different synth sounds you can have, and 1, 2 and 3 mute and unmute them. This is the same for the drum sounds, except they have an extra spot, 4 muted and 8 is the extra drum layer part.

      Interesting, I'all have a deeper look at the tone edit menu! We love this synth at Zicplace.com together with a Minitaur, a Crave, some old mks expanders, and a real acoustic piano. Lot of live fun!

      Hey man thx for the tips! I'm new to the synth but have a problem. When I turn on the effects, it affects the whole project. How do I get the effects on separate tracks? For example: side chain on 1 synth, reverb on the drums etc

    • @ambidex
      @ambidex Před rokem +1

      @Carlos M A bit late, but while you have each engine active, you can change which parts of the effects paths are on for each engine. For drums, you can change this for each drum partial individually. You can also menu dive and change the level send to effects 1 or effects 2 for each engine.
      Regarding side-chaining, you chose from each engine whether sidechaining is on or not and there's a master side-chain menu to decide which part or drum sound the side-chaining will be based on.

    • @ambidex
      @ambidex Před rokem +1

      Totally agree except it's much easier to use something like the JD-Xi Manager or Patchbase editors instead of menu diving.
      Can you explain to me what the unison setting technically does? I've read up on it and just don't understand.

    • @savanaviolenta
      @savanaviolenta Před 4 lety +3

      It's not entry level synth, what you pay for is the ENGINES, the option to layer multiple parts, and Roland had to cut corners with the build quality. I think it's quite all right, anyway I will be delving into sounds, not looking at it. Its a great synth.

    Been messing about with my girlfriend’s JD-Xi, and I gotta say... definitely not a toy! A lot of power for a small package, and there is quite a lot that could be done with one, regardless of experience level of the player. Leaves a lot of room for growth and experimentation if the user is a beginner!

    I have mine for a year now and absolutely love it. I have to get the overlay too. It looks much better and would save me time cleaning :~)

      The Matrixbrute is a BEAST! I love it. It looks intimidating, but because everything is out on display and the mod matrix allows you to see what connections you're making it's perfect for sound design. I unbox and have a play on mine here: czcams.com/video/exUo0wGs1is/video.html

    (*update: I adjusted the setting from "Real" to 127 and boosted the output gain at 12, and it's much better) My JDXi is a keeper because of the Vocoder and the Jupiter 8 strings. The drums are also superior and a major reason this is a keeper. The sequencer(as it is) is easy to use and I MIDI synch it to a Behringer Odyssey sequencer on occasion.

    I totally love mine. Apart from the very old MC-303 I have linked to mine it's the best idea scratchpad I've ever owned. The analogue channel is basic as hell, so I use a Behringer Wasp to fill that gap.
    My advice to anyone wanting one is to use the use the PC editor. Menu diving gets annoying

      Too true. I highly recommend the JD-Xi Manager to unlock the full potential of this thing. the amount of expression and animation you can build in to the digital synths is unreal. My dream is to have a USB midi controller loaded with sliders and knobs that's essentially running the JD-Xi manager. This would basically add the functionality of the JD-XA.

    Roland JD-Xi is one of very few synths that are MULTITIMBRAL. I have seen bi-timbral, like in the Summit, but mostly older keyboards have that feature, which manufacturers seemed to have dropped as a feature...which is a shame. Bring multimbrality back along with after touch. Gear can do a lot these days but the companies purposely cripple it to an extent....to keep everyone buying more. Always hold back on a feature until you bring out a newer model. It's annoying.
