  • Edmunds staff writer Travis Langness takes the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 V8 on a trip through the mountains of Wyoming. The new Silverado is longer, taller and wider than before. But thanks to new materials in the body and frame, the Silverado is as much as 450 pounds lighter than the previous model. All of that means more payload and more towing capability, plus a quieter ride on the road.
    Q: What's new about the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado?
    A: The Silverado is completely redesigned. The frame and body are made from new materials, it sports a new look, and six new powertrain combinations are available. The interior is redesigned, too, with more space for crew-cab models and lots of new high-tech features.
    Q: What are the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado's main competitors?
    A: American truck rivals include the Ford F-150, the Ram 1500 and the Chevy's twin brother, the GMC Sierra 1500. Other significant competitors include the Nissan Titan and the Toyota Tundra.
    Q: How much can the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 tow?
    A: Depending on how you equip the truck (engine, cab configuration, 4x4 or 4x2, optional towing package, etc.), the Silverado is capable of towing up to 12,600 pounds. That's one of the largest figures in the class.
    Q: How much does the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 V8 cost?
    A: A base trim level, single-cab Silverado starts at around $32,000. Our test truck was a crew-cab Silverado RST with four-wheel drive and the optional 5.3-liter V8. With some stand-alone options, it came to $49,070.

    So I was a salesman at a dealership that sold both the Ram and Silverado.
    The Ram drove and looks better hands down.
    The Silverado has a few features that are really cool and certainly drives better than the 2018 and previous year models.
    Drive them both before you decide.

    The best vehicle I've seen! No animal cruelty from what I see in the interior of the truck! It has a flatbed trunk compartment to put things in like fruits, vegetables, seeds, to replant plants to help the enviroment and the habitats which the creatures live in and need to sustain their lives! I need one of these. I've seen too many vehicles with animal cruelty in it like leather which makes me feel their suffering just being in it or seeing it! If I would have any vehicle that I may need it would be one without leather, one that dose not wrongfully impact the enviroment, and one that can help give back to the enviroment, that also has many features that are helpful!

    I’m a Ford guy and I do like what Chevy did to the looks of this truck. The overall exterior look and round wheel wells are attractive in my opinion. Once you swing open a door and see an interior that hasn’t changed much, well, that’s when I start to dislike what they did with this new truck.... Dodge went all out in their 2019 interior and Chevy really didn’t do much at all.... Maybe they’ll update it over the next few model years....

    Love how GM is sneaking in the lack of 2 speed transfer case to bolster its MPG number.

    • @dpach2382
      @dpach2382 Před 5 lety +1

      Besides a couple of pounds weight savings, how does not having a 2-speed transfer case help MPG? By the way, if you want the 2-speed transfer case, just get the Z71 package which is available across all trim levels except WT. People who need 4x4 low also need all-terrain tires, skid plates, etc which is what the Z71 package is. The vast majority of truck owners never use 4x4 low. Having a single speed TC with 4x4 high simplifies the TC, plus they added a terrain mode which reduces torque when in 4x4 high and actually applies the brake at low 4x4 speeds whenever you take your foot off the gas pedal. So if you need to do a little off roading, this system works like a crawl system and the driver only has to worry about the gas while the truck does the braking. Great technology.

    Never owned a pickup. Recently started looking and really like the 2019 Silverado extra cab (Not the quad cab) 2 WD, 5.3, 8 speed with the Max Trailering Pkg. The bucket seat model with a much nicer center console arrangement is great also. I am concerned about reports of problems with the AFM and engine lifter failures. Costly fixes. Drove a couple and liked the drive. I would definitely get one of those plug in devices that cancel AFM and save the lifter problems. Oh, the Class Action suit concerning 8 speed transmission problems give me concern also.

      Debatable, personally I believe the 2019 RAM 1500 is the best looking truck on the market OVERALL, however the 2019 Silverado is still a very attractive truck and I believe they trade blows in terms of exterior looks, however the interior of the Silverado is a complete letdown, the RAM EASILY dominates in that area. The 2018 F-150 is kind of the middle ground compared to the new RAM and Silverado.
      Honestly though, the only thing that's keeping me interested in the new Silverado is the upcoming 3.0L Duramax w/ the Inline-6 configuration. However I hope RAM makes considerable changes to the EcoDiesel as well.

If or when it ever dies, I’ll just buy the next best used one for 15k or less cash I can find. I’ll let others spend their money while I gain the benefits. I’ll never finance a depreciating asset. I’m also not crazy about all the automated features. Way too much that will eventually break and cost a fortune to fix. Touch screens, keyless push start, powered tailgate etc, all fluff and future headaches when they stop working. But I’m still a Chevy guy.

One-speed and then pay extra for the high trim for two speed? Or has the button just been relabeled, and two-speed is standard. The Chevy web site makes if seem like the former is the case.

    Why I chose a 2019 Silverado 1500 RST Allstar edition over a GM Ram:
    6.7 foot bed
    More payload than ram
    Full 4 doors on Double cab vs Fords silly suicide doors.
    5.3 with DFM
    8 speed auto.
    Much easier to find a Max tow V8 Chevy compared to Fords v8 max tow.
    Fuel economy on par with Ram or Ford V8 numbers.
    Have you driven the new 2019 Silverado 1500? Very plush ride and very quiet interior on the freeway. If it wasnt for this refresh, RAM would have my money. Thank goodness GM, your refresh just earned you a new customer.

    Love Chevy and silverados. Have seen many numerous Silverados & suburbans in my family for generations.
    However.......
    The newest silverado not impressed with the interior compared to a Dodge Ram and a Ford f150. Disappointed in that. Im seeing guys switch more to rams and f150s more these days.
    Also the grill and the front just looks off. Not sure if im a fan of it. This current and previous generation i feel like the GMC Sierra, ford and dodge have all looked meaner, aggressiver, nicer and more aesthetically appealing than the silverado. when these trucks drive by i'm like wow nice, for the first time ( being a die-hard chevy loyalist)
    Lately if feels like the entire chevy trucks and full-size suvs have become more "soccer mom's". less aggressive, less masculine, and more minivan-ish. i find myslef holding off on buying my 3rd suburban and my 4th silverado due to this and not sure if i will buy the chevy tbh.

Didn't mention the crewcab short bed has more cubic feet than fullsize beds of the others. Reviewers always point out hard plastics as if Noone else uses them or complains about the steering wheel position yet doesn't mention the correction. This design is so different than any other that people are scared to admit it's sweet, yet instead jump on the bandwagon to point out stupid things. These trucks will sell more than the previous style. Mark my words.

    I grew up on GM. My parents always bought Pontiac and Oldsmobiles. I've owned two Silverados myself in my adulthood. But...the hideous redesign of this truck made me switch to Ram. I don't think I could go back to a Silverado at this point. The Ram is just a solid and more well built truck.

    For all of you saying your men cuz you drive an f150, saying the silverado looks bad and has a poor interior, have you taken a look at the basic looking f150 with a 2009 interior with an iphone 4 sized screen 50 square plastic buttons the silverado is a porsche compared to that thing, the sad apple watch sized gauge screen, giant weird door handles that give the exterior a bad look it just looks bad, the crew cab starts at 38,000 while the silverado's starts at 37,000 and the silverado's base model looks way better than the f150, the ford does not look more high end it is just a basic truck for the same price as a silverado with a screen half the size of my phone. Yes the ram is better but more expensive for the price point the silverado is as good as it gets

    We have that auto start/stop button on a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. It's the worse feature you can ever imagine. Once the engine warms up, it shuts itself off. When you press the gas pedal, it restarts. Yeah, you can hit that "A" button to bypass it, but you have to do this every time you start the vehicle. I would advise everyone to buy an older model and avoid this feature. The Dodge cars with the big Hemi's pay a "gas guzzler tax" and avoid having to have this inane feature.

    It'd be a good truck if it didn't have AFM, .longevity of AFM is in question, failed on me, will cost nearly $2k to fix, I doubt it'd saved me $2k over the life of the engine. The system is very complex - far more complex that a DOHC or turbo and if any of the sensors or actuators in the system fail, it will result in high costs. GM as usual isn't making good on it. At this point I would never consider a vehicle with cylinder deactivation on it. If you look in the forums there is post after post of people disabling AFM, same thing on RAM. People aren't disabling AFM that for no reason.

    • @mudman6156
      @mudman6156 Před 5 lety +2

      tgilldesign Personally, the tweets they made to the interior look WORSE than the old truck’s interior. All that crappy plastic needs to go. It looks cheap because it is cheap. Problem is...the truck’s expensive. I want what I pay for. In this case, the RAM nailed it. The Chevy failed it.

    • @tgilldesign
      @tgilldesign Před 5 lety

      The 2019 RAM has without question THEE BEST interior out of them all.... I was set to buy one and then started reading the hoards of horror stories on the 'Hemi Engine Tick" issue they have had for years..... I went to a dealer, and had him start up two 2019's cold (warm ambient temperature, but hadn't been started in a few days) and sure as hell, they both 'clattered' upon startup and then it quickly quieted down in about 5 seconds. Some people report that this phenomenon gets worse as time goes on and can...not always... result in major engine problems. I suspect the first 5-10 seconds after a startup with the vehicle sitting for hours or a day or two means that the engine oil has drained down and doesn't immediately pump back up for proper lubrication.... that is scary business. I couldn't deal with that or the prospect of a 'noisy' idling engine.... so sadly scratched them off my list.... have an F150 coming in in a few weeks. I think I made the right decision. The F150 seems to get better reliability scores than Chevy or RAM.....
      If you are intent on buying a RAM.... go to the dealer and ask him to get 3 sets of keys to 2019 RAMs that have been sitting.... and walk out there WITH HIM and stand by the front wheel well and have the SALESMAN start the vehicle and then listen to it run for about 10 seconds..... you will likely see what I mean.
      Don't have them go get the vehicle and drive it up for you, because by that time, the noise is gone.
      I literally questioned a RAM service writer about this noise, and he said, "They are all noising and click like hell when you first start them up.... we can hear them in the winter across the far side of the parking lot." Seriously - - - that is almost to the word what he said.

    A wasted opportunity below that center stack. That's a HUGE gaping hole between the center armrest and the dash. They could have put another shelf there or room for another person if it can with a seat belt in the center.
    GM really made this as "less" as possible so GMC can take all the best pickings.
    How much is that truck? Hopefully affordable for the masses as it's shown. $40k? Anything more would be ludicrous.
