I think it’s even foolish to pretend to listen to a record and “understand” it ... OK for ballads and elementary lyrics, but P.F.’s lyrics, and all their concept albums, should be “studiated first” as we did at the time on specialized magazines while waiting for LPs to arrive “in the province”.

I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.

Is this your personal experience or have you reported theth of others?
I have read a lot about this LP and, for example, I know that P.F. at the time they did so many concerts, and traveled so much, that they could only produce new pieces in those moments. Then they tried them on while they were setting up the equipment for the show (the video for "Biding My Time" is historic) and finally they tested them with the public by performing it at random as a corollary to the promotional tour they were conducting.
For example: during the Atom Heart Mother tour, in June 71 in Italy, I listened to Echoes when it was still called _The Son of Nothing_ ,it had different lyrics, no beginning and ending as after recorded in Meddle (lasts 16 minutes in the bootleg).
Returning to _The Great Gig in the Sky_ the first draft was made in 72 with the text, recited by Nick, which was then recovered in '77 in the middle of Sheep. The title was “The Religion Song” and back then it was really set as a satire on religions… and that text is really lashing on the theme even in Animals! The instrumentation was also different and guitar based.
Later the song was rearranged returning to the piano on which Rick had invented the melody. With the title of "The Mortality Sequence" Roger played with other lyrics without ever being satisfied. However, he had already clear the theme and the place in which he wanted it in the "concept" that he was imagining for DSOTM.
      (I apologize for my english)

There are some amazing live versions where three different singers tackle the female vocalist portion of this song.
These are the sounds your soul makes when you realize you're about to die. Then comes the anger then comes the acceptance and then the final outro
As great as they are they still don't hold a candle to the studio version where Clare Torrey channeled something otherworldly

For many it’s a matter of “imprinting”. This piece is so powerful that the first listening is hardly matched by a second “different” ... even if undoubtedly the original version, the result of a skilled mix in the studio ..., is the “better square” in giving a very precise meaning to the phases of the end of life.
Those who had the opportunity to listen to the original then do not have these problems.

This is all about death - the raw pain, the fear and hurt, leading to acceptance and finally serenity. The spoken parts aren't from band members - the intro part is a man talking about not being afraid of dying, anytime will do, we all have to go sometimes - to me he doesn't sound as though he really believes all that he says. The much quieter female voice in the middle of track simply says "I never said I was frightened of dying".

Through my own personal experience right now, I can hear a mother dying from cancer. The reason I interpret this song in that way is because I'm about to lose my mother from breast cancer. She was just released from the hospital and put on hospice, so she could die at home. It's hard to communicate with her because she is on morphine. I still can hear her pain, even though she's heavily medicated. The female singer in this song sounds like she is experiencing pain. That's what I get from this song.

On the "Dark Side of the Moon" album, this song comes immediately after "Time". To get the full impact & meaning you really need to listen to these 2 songs in order. "Time" ends with the "tolling of the iron bell" (signaling a funeral service), giving context to the softly spoken words about not being afraid of dying. Then the vocalist expresses, without words, the emotions of a dying person whose soul is leaving this world.

Iam sure it has been explained but here it is one more time.
Rick Wright wrote this song, which is about life, gradually descending into death. Hence the angrier and more intense first half with a dying person refusing to "go gently into that good night."The second half is gentler, as the dying person gives into the inevitable and fades away. One if the pressure that Rick dealt with was the fear of dying because of all the traveling they were having to do. Here is his actual words. Wright explained, For me, one of the pressures of being in the band was this constant fear of dying because of all the traveling we were doing in planes and on the motorways in America and in Europe."

I'm sure it will have been said before, but this tune is very spiritual. It's the journey from life to death, with rebellion being replaced by acceptance and, finally, tranquillity. A beautiful song from a stunning album.

Nobody comes home at the end of a day and says to themselves “oh, I think I’ll listen to Great Gig In The Sky”. But i can tell you, if you’ve had a crappy day, you might just come home and put on a extended Pink Floyd playlist and drink the night away without lights on laying on the couch or settee. This song would have to be one of those songs…

PINK FLOYD, "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY". Following Time, the line that gives you the continuation. "Shorter of bteath, One Day Closer to Death" in Great GIG. Is final moments prior too Dying. The frustration of "I can't believe my life's over. Her sound of screaming before she gives in too the reality. Then quietly echoing into the unknown of complete silence.
