  • In this video I go over how to cast silver jewelry using Tufa stone. This is based on how the Navajo make silver jewelry and many still do to this day. I have seen very little info on this and not that many videos that go into details so I thought I could help get the info out about this technique.

    I appreciate the amount of time and effort you put into this project.
    Good too that you showed us that you had to recast three times. Always best to see what can go wrong than to be told. All in all lots of information on an area of casting that I knew nothing about.
    Take care of yourself and I look forward to your next video. 😊

    Just a tip- If you need to flatten the surface of a tufa stone, just rub it against a cinder block, like the kind with two square holes, easily found at any Home Depot or Lowe’s.

    We usually use a length of rubber inner tube to hold the mold halves together. Much better than wire. Bicycle tubes work very well. A couple wraps that you tuck in the end, or tie two ends off.

      When it come to casting, if you can get a mapp gas torch you should be able to melt down some silver and do with with little to no problems.

    Hi, Nice video! Might be a good idea to shorten your pouring channel and make it larger in diameter and short. When your metal is ready to pour, heat it up for 30 more seconds to get it hotter to stay molten longer. These tips are based on sand casting. Might work better. Where can I order the (tufa?) stone? Thanks! Take care, Rebecca

  • @nikadoo2249
    @nikadoo2249 Před 2 lety +1

    Thank you so much for this video!! I was always curious how this was done. Why do you have to have 2 sides? Couldn’t you just carve the design in one side, lay flat, & pour metal in that carved space?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  Před 2 lety +2

      Liquid metal like to ball up or make a dome. So if you don't have a backing then the back of it will be super thick and you would have way more to clean up to make it the right size and shape.

    Great information! I am curious to know why you say to avoid any bits of solder in your casting melts. I thought solder was silver? Also, do you need different crucibles for fine and sterling silver?

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  Před 3 lety +2

      Solder is mostly silver but has other metals in it. If you meant them down into you casting it can make bubble or cracks in the work. For example I think hard solder is only 76% silver.
      As for the crucible you should have one for every metal. This is because it leaves little fits of the metal behind after you cast. So if you use it for silver. And you want to use 18k gold next you will be mixing silver into it changing the color of the gold along with the K

    • @rebeccakanoff1681
      @rebeccakanoff1681 Před 3 lety +1

      Hi
      The solder has zinc in it so it melts at a lower temperature than the silver. You can use scrap with a portion of solder (only really clean metal I wash my filings with dish soap in a gold pan and wash out all foreign materials - just like panning gold), but it is not good for drawing wire or milling sheet because too much zinc makes the silver tend to crack. Hope that helps. But the scrap with solder is fine for example a ring, ... that won't be drawn/milled.
